What ever happen to Indy Radio?

I have been gone for awhile, but I remember when Indy radio was a benchmark for the state of good broadcasters. Now, the traffic reports sound like high school students. The Brownsburg radio station sounds a little better than it did a few years back. What happened to wibc? It sounds like farmers have taken over it. I remember WTPI had some excellant on air people, now it sounds like fill in part timers have ran amock. For those of you who have been around this must be distressing. Any comments? Disagreements. :-\

are you refering to 1070 on am or 93.1 fm concerning wibc?

actually I prefer wklu(I presume you are refering to that as the brownsburg station) in the bruce quinn days(1999 to 2003 or whenever russ oasis took it over).

The issue is not just Indy radio, but radio in general. Relatively inexpensive satellite music and talk services, automation and unattended hours at stations as well as increased purchase prices for these stations have taken away radio's farm system (to borrow a baseball term.) The small markets that used to train new broadcasters are now mostly repeaters for satellite music and talk services. The stations where many of us were allowed to make minor mistakes, learn from them and move up the ladder are for the most part history. That means the second tier and even rated market stations become the first gigs for new broadcasters who have yet to really learn what it's all about. At least that's what I think.

Ultimately, it comes down to dollars and cents (sense?)...if there is a way to save $ or make more $...well...you know what I mean.....

Very good and thanks. Hate to sound like an old man, but I can remember when radio was prefered over television. The DJ on duty was more entertaining than anything else on televsion. This really wasnt that long ago.

It seems that a few got wealthy on the backs of the public airwaves. This is not what the intent was of the FCC back in the 1930s. WKLU sounds like an automated station to me I wasnt aware that it changed ownership. Thanks for bringing me up to date.

For some of us who are lucky enough to make a living at it, the good ole' days of Indy radio are NOW! I can appreciate the past, but I'm not going to get aroused listening to a circa 1980 aircheck of WNAP.

I'll "get aroused" with WNAP circa 1977, but I'll also "get aroused" with JB Love evenings on WFMS, or (*gasp*) Delilah on B105.7.

Last morning show I liked was Pidge ... haven't given Jake a chance.

Pidge was one the great ones, a true pro. IBC traffic now sounds like they have the interns reading a list of crashes at intersections no one ever travels. What happened to Big John? These stations are not only doing a disservice to the community, but the advertising community too. Cutting the quality of the product at the same time charging higher rates.

I agree with you about Pidge. I just can't get into the new WIBC morning show. I tried to give Jake a chance, but let's face it, he's a sports guy. I've also pretty much given up on Dave Wilson in the afternoon. Seems like half the time I tune in, he and Joe are talking about sports, too. I've switched to Abdul in the morning and Dennis Miller in the afternoon. If I want sports, I go to 1070. Pidge, we need you back!

Also, when will WIBC decide on ONE idenifier...is it 93-IBC, 93 WIBC, etc? Make up your minds.

The traffic reports are pretty bad also. Don't know what has happened at Metro. It was so much better when Max was running things.

Just my humble opinion.

Publicly traded corporate radio.

RDO nailed-it... It IS “publicly-traded corporate radio”... This “genius” hasn't quite figured it out, but they are literally driving an Edsel down the highway on the last gallon of three-buck gas... They are dangerously-close to being “over”! FACT: for the FIRST TIME since Fibber McGee ‘n Mollie, they have managed to engineer NO “hip-factor” with a youthful demographic. As a forty-something marketing professional—I happen to believe that this is a horrible condition—and prelude to a collapse. ANOTHER FACT:The 401ks need to hemorrhage, and current corporate radio needs to sunset... Give the freqs back to “the regular folks”... We’d be better-off... And [maybe] “radio” will survive its greatest challenge ever and find a new place!

IBC and Emmis don't get their traffic from Metro.

They do them in-house.

And, yes, IBC/Emmis traffic is horrible.

Don't they get the info from Metro's wire though? I worked at an Indy station for a while (not owned by one of the mega corps) and we did our reports in house but we got our hard copy from a Metro computer. To me, it sounds like WIBC's traffic is from those Metro reports. Maybe Mel McMahon can shed some insight?

From what i recall after Reb Porter left Metro. He went to work for Traffic.com. thus the reason why Reb was doing PM Drive on IBC before Mel took over the afternoon spot on IBC. I'm not sure who CC uses for their Info but i'm pretty sure they dont get there info from metro either

Either way, I think traffic reports in general aren't that good any more. I miss Big John.

Words2you, you are an over zealous jealous person and I totally disagree with you. I would love to here your best effort, or go to your job to see how great you are.

If he were still there Big John would be doing the same content as the current people do. Maybe what you miss is his style. Insiders say John left do some personal problems.
