What ever happened to Accuweather?

I don't reacall it being used in Boston, but it's still used on WABC in New York and WPVI in Philadelphia.

What do the Boston stations use for weather systems? That seems very downplayed here as opposed to a market like Tampa/St Peteresburg where WTSP plugs theirs (VIPER) and WFTS does as well (TITAN - which I think is Accuweather's).

I stand corrected TITAN is from WSI.

WBBM (am) Chicago still uses accu-weather. Heard it this morning.

Actually, WZMY uses WeatherCentral for their weather graphics and has since the transition from WNDS-> WZMY.

Yes...and so does WGGB. WGME & WGGB are both Sinclair stations, too.

The original question was: "Does Boston even have an Accuweather station?"

It would be safe to assume, since it is in the New England TV category, that I was asking about TV stations. It would also be safe to assume, since I asked about Boston, that I was asking whether Boston had an Accuweather station. I didn't ask about Western Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Maine, or Peoria.

Since AccuWeather represents an outsourcing of your weather department (of sorts), it tends to appeal to smaller market (or just smaller) stations more than the big guys. Since all of the main Boston signals are big enough to have their own fully-staffed weather departments, you're probably not going to hear them giving the "AccuWeather Forecast".

With regard to graphics, WSI (a local company based in the Billerica area) and Kavouras have historically been better at this than AccuWeather. My guess is that most Boston stations contract with WSI - though I cannot confirm this. They are the biggest in the US.

FWIW, WPVI in Philly does have the "AccuWeather" service - but that would seem to be the exception. As AccuWeather has had a long relationship with WPVI - and is based near Penn State - this is a logical pairing. They use it as a companion service to their own staff and it is highly promoted. I guess the name recognition is very high in PA, hence its value in that market.

Of course, WBZ radio does use the AccuWeather service for all of their forecasting needs.
