What ever happened to Dan Ingram

FYI: Dan Ingram will be back on CBS-FM this Sunday evening from 7-10 pm as part of their "NY Radio Greats" series. Now, whether it will be the Ingram Man will be live in studio or a compilation of airchecks (a la the Wolfman Jack installment) from his years at The Golden 101, I'm not sure. I'm hoping for the former and not the latter. Either way though, it'll be great to hear his voice on the station once again! So let's see now....they've had Randy Davis, Don K. Reed, Max Kinkel and now Dan Ingram. Can Harry Harrison, Cousin Brucie, Dandy Dan Daniel and Ron Lundy be far behind?

In regard to shrinking radio dj salaries.....There is an old saying "Water seeks its own level". If radio station management perceives no difference between a dj and automation, then it means that the dj makes no difference and has no talent and should be paid accordingly. On the other hand, if a dj can make a ratings and billing difference, he will also be paid accordingly. There will continue to be less and less radio on-the-air jobs and the salaries will continue to go down but, if you are the one dj who can do something unique and special that garners audience, you still have the potential to make some money but, you better be really good.

Oh really? Here in NYC, veteran jock Al Bandiero, who took WKTU from 15th to the top 3 in his time slot in the ratings, recently left the station after Clear (Cheap) Channel made it very clear that they would not pay him more money when his contract came up.

Sounds silly to me. You can bet that if their mid-day host Diane Prior came to them demanding a pay raise or she would leave, the suits almost certainly would give her whatever she wanted to keep her at the station.

You're kidding, right?

Not when I read this...

(As KTU’s top-rated on-air personality, heard weekdays from 9am to 3pm, Diane Prior is a friend to millions, but her style belies the size of her audience. “

Diane Prior loves her work, and it shows on the air. She has appeared at thousands of neighborhood block parties, supermarkets, mall openings, night clubs, and charity events in the New York metropolitan area. She continues to be in demand as a commercial spokesperson as well. In almost a decade at the new WKTU Prior has shared the stage at station events with the top names of musical entertainment including Ricky Martin, Cher, Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and more. She has been honored by the Museum of Television and Radio. She has been nominated time after time for New York’s Metro AIR (Achievements in Radio) awards, and won the award for the “Best Midday Show” in 2001.)

Given that she is both popular and one of the most prestigious figures on radio I'd say Prior is in a good position to demand whatever she wants. Just like Jim Kerr and Valerie Smaldone, I'd say that any station would be eager to have Prior if she was cut loose. Knowing that her bosses would almost definitely be inclined not to pull an Al Bandiero on her.

That's a nice piece of fluff, but when push comes to shove, you can bet on Cheap Channel to say adios to Prior when it comes to protecting their bottom line, especially on the station that is the bottom feeder of their NYC cluster.

Dear LIradiofan22,
I don't mean to belittle you...but it's obvious by your last post in this thread, and the fact that your handle/user name tells all...that you haven't a clue about the business of which you so avidly speak. In deference, I can tell that "Fang" has been bitten before!!! I don't mean to be rude, but may I also assume, that according to your handle, you are also young, maybe 22?
Take it from an old pro who's been in and out of this business more than a few times, your expectations of what you think "would be"...are about as far from reality as possible. The "people" who now run radio...are the lowest form of life (account executives). Do yourself a favor...if you're young...enjoy what little is left of radio from the sidelines, as an enthusiast, a fan and nothing more. Your naivete speaks for itself.

Wow, who sounds "bitten"?
