What Ever Happened To Rockin' 56?

I no longer live in the market, so I was wondering what ever happened to Rockin' 56? It is/was the sister am to Woof FM. Who is running it, and what format? Just curious.

I was the stoney/pd of the "Rockin' 56"...the 24 hour "Zappathon" was the swansong of that station not the cause of its demise...the owner informed me two weeks prior that we were flipping formats to sports and granted me permission to "have fun 'cause its all over now". I was very fortunate to get an interview with Frank Zappa and air some of the most fun/bizzare/disturbing music created (I particularly enjoyed Dale Bozio masturbating with a pen from the album "ThingFish"...got a call from a Baptist minister in B'ham 'bout that!).

For those that don't know the "Rockin' 56" was an AOR starring (in no particular order) Brian Nash, R.C. Bell, Panama Jackie(that's what she called herself when she went to Island 106), a little bit of Kris VanDyke and (yours truely) Crazy Dave. One of the coolest things about that station was that every Saturday at noon until Sunday at sign-off the station played Black Gospel!

Our first logo was the Zig-Zag man!(if you have to ask...you don't need to know1) ;)

Dave Dave Dave.......the Zappa comment was tongue-in-cheek.
Glad you are doing better. Was worried about you.
Oh, who was the engineer for Rockin' 56 :)

whatta guy! the original bailing wire and duct taper! I fondly remember "bumping" up the power, using the Jesus stick, changing the antenna...generally forgetting more than most will ever learn about radio...he is a treasure!

almost forgot...TUBES!!!

Ok, so Dave, is that David Gilligan?? And what ever happened to Brian Nash and KVD (Kriss)? After I left the area, I lost touch will all of you! And yes, I remember Brian doing the ACDC lunch box. In case you are wondering, this is John, formerly of Hit Country 101 WZTZ. I helped Mikey and his Dad put that one on the air.

I (Wade Giddens) was also with WZTZ, as News Director, when it signed on in 1986. I was a weekend DJ on WZTZ and weekday DJ on WELB after a short stint as News Director. It is hard to believe that was a little more than 20 years ago.

WADE!! Long time no see! I used to be David Johns on ZTZ. Didn't you go to that station near Opp, I can't remember the calls. I think I heard you there on my last trip through. Anyway, good to know you are still around!

KVD is OM for Clear Channel in Chattanooga and I think Brian has a farm somewhere in Georgia.

Big John...are you still around Albany?

I moved ZTZ to Enterprise in June. It is now WVVL "weevil 101" and is located in the building KMX was located in.
KMX moved to Dothan a year or two ago.

I was at WQZX in Greenville, AL for a year, then at WAMI in Opp for 11 years. Presently, I'm at WTBF (http://www.wtbf.com) in Troy as Chief Engineer and I do weekends at WAAO (http://www.waao.com) in Andalusia. See thread on WAAO's new studios for more info. I had lost track of everyone associated with WZTZ/WELB except for the Holderfields. I have run across Larry Doster (gospel program on WELB) a couple of times in the past several years. I saw Hayes White (Paul Hayes) in Wal-Mart two or three years ago. He was, and I assume still is, in the insurance business. As far as the rest of the staff in '86-'87. I'm clueless. As you probably know, 101.1 is now WVVL, "Weevil", with studios in the old WKMX building in downtown Enterprise. WELB is still in the same building. WKMX put their studios in Dothan, leaving Enterprise, a city of almost 23,000 people, with no radio station actually broadcasting from the city.

CORRECTION.

WVVL's website is http://www.weevil101.com. I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

Ok, first off, no I didn't know that ZTZ had moved, and changed to Weevil. What are they programming?

Second, no, I'm not in or near Albany. I'm north of Atlanta. I was ops manager of 1690 Air Atlanta until it got sold. Now I'm program director for Classic 1230 (you can hear the streaming at www.wngm1230.com I'm on from 3-6pm). I also run a recording studio in Ball Ground, GA called Flatbottom Underground. In addition, I'm part owner of Digital Creative Networks, which is a web site hosting and developement company. As most of you know, man cannot live by radio alone!

So there, you have my history for a couple of years, now who are you HomeyD? You obviously know me!!

Your stream sounds good. I have a friend in Ball Ground. His name is Joe Morrow. HOMEYD=mikie

John, it is good to hear from you. I always wonder what the people I worked with in the past are doing now. Most former co-workers, that I know about, are not trying to make a living from radio alone.

Mikie, as in engineer extreme Mikie Holderfield? And I don't know why, but Joe Morrow sounds familiar....

Yes, it's good to hear from you again too, Wade! And as for making a living in radio alone, VERY few are doing that now days. Here in Atlanta, all bets are off! Stations are being sold, changed, and jocks dropped. That is why I found a little station that is trying to stay local. I enjoyed managing a "Major Market" station for a year and a half, but it sure is nice not to have to drive downtown everyday. I actually program my little station from 80 miles away from my studio via Gotomypc, and a flexible automation program! I only go to the station about once a month or so. I am looking at lining up a couple more small stations that want local programming at a nice price. All I do is go on the internet and get the local weather, check out a few sites that post local events, and BAMN! The show sounds local.

So, are you guys going to tell me WHAT FORMAT WEEVIL 101.1 IS BROADCASTING?? Come on, it's killing me. Let me guess, Country? DUH!! I just looked at their web site! MAN I can be dense sometimes!! So Uncle Doug is making a play for Enterprise! GREAT!! It's about time! I wish him all the success in the world!!

MIKEY!! Wow, I agree with Wade, it's hard to believe it's been 20 YEARS! I guess things are going well with you. No more "lost weekends in Opp"? {grin} ;) It's great to hear that your dad is doing well with the old 101.1. I wish all of you continued success!
