What ever happened to Z100 in Providence??

H

Hello Salty??

Guest
With not many Z100's in the country, we did have one in Providence a few years back, didn't we??

I was wondering the history, jocks, and the format before it was Z100. I thought it was a solid station with alot of potential, but with a terrible, dual signal......

Just wanted to see if anyone rememebered listening.....

Regards.....

Before Z100 it was 100.3 The Hawk. The station was voice tracked throughout the day outside of morning drive.
Jazzy used to work there. He could remember better than me who was on the hawk.

Z100 was Providence's version of the "80s and More" format. Although the format has succeeded in certain markets, such as Jacksonville, Z100 was never given the chance or the tools to succeed. While it had good imaging and sweepers, the station had absolutely no budget. As the previous poster noted, voicetracking and automation dominated the station nearly twenty hours a day (and twenty-four hours a day on weekends). I vaguely remember Scott Cook working middays, and Mighty Mike Osbourne, of PRO-FM and WODS fame, briefly held mornings. The playlist was extremely tight and repetitive and unchanging. Had Citadel taken even the slightest pride in the station, perhaps it would have been a success.

The station would not have succeeded unless it evolved. 80s formats don't work for the most part and there's nothing about the Providence market to suggest it would work here even if Citadel had cared about it. It started with Jackson,Freak, and Foxx in the morning which was Ken Jackson,Andy The Freak from PRO-FM, and Joey. That lasted about 3/4 of an hour then it was Ken Jackson solo then eventually Mighty Mike who did about the best job as anyone could have done with a morning format that was nothing but talking up posts. The other jocks were nothing to write home about but nothing to complain about either. The "and more" would have had to have taken over for the format to still be alive today. Citadel set it up for failure or so I'm told.

Before that The Hawk was one of those "80s,90s,and 70s" stations (in that order for some stupid reason). Basically classic rock or hits with 90s in the mix. I don't even remember who worked there but don't think the staff ever met each other.

Neither station was awful but neither would have succeeded. Nobody cares enough to create any kind of a stir in this market because of the cluster mentality. The closest thing to a radio war is in talk radio and that war was won long ago.

i used to listen to it when it was z100... and i think if i can remember correctly... the line up was:
mighty mike 530-10a
jack casy 10a-12p
scott cook 12p-3p
j-t 3-6p
joey foxx 6-9p
and nancy hall 9- midnight
and i think there was somone overnight briefly.. someone correct me if im wrong...
im pritty sure that was it but i also know that people were shuffled around alot and the air staff wasnt stable.... i think after jack left there was nobody from 10a till noon... just sweepers....... thats when you could tell the station was going down hill... although i dont know how many of those jocks were live and who was voice tracked..... but i also think most of the jocks wore other hats around the building i know jack casy was the program director.. i dunno who took over after he left... but i think if citadel gave it just a little bit of a chance.. (and a budget) it might have worked.. especially now when you have a station like b101 startin to play more and more 80s hits

I can remember that Telemedia was concerned just before I was leaving because jack Casey came into the market to program WSNE....I thought it was silly at the time (still do)

Who is Jazzy?

He worked for The Hawk or Z100??

I worked for The Hawk! Lunchtime, live 10am - 1pm then tracked to 3pm, and I was equal 4th at lunchtime with
WSNE despite the signal!

Jazzy

It's like playing "What's My Line?"....

Are you Jeff Cooke??

Sorry....forgot you English mess around with the spelling of perfectly normal names.....

No! It is America which has messed around with the English langauge.

Geoffrey is a name of Germanic extraction meaning 'God's Peace.'
Jeff is a shortening of the name Jefferson...
Since my father named me Geoffrey after a dear friend of his who lost his life in the Second World War, Geoff it is!

Anyway - who are you?
And why do you need to know?!!! ;D

GEOFF

Sorry, Geoff...no offense....just bringing a sense of humor to this board that desperately needs it...

Let's just say I am close to some of the people that were involved in the events that led the Hawk to it's extinction, before it rose from the ashes to become Z100...

There was another woman who worked with you....Adele Greene....she voicetracked on the Hawk, and was interning at a place called Kramer Video Productions in Braintree.....

Do you know whatever happened to her?? I thought she was amazingly beautiful and talented....

A little offense was taken, but I realise this board should be in good fun, hence the teeth filled grin at the end of my message!

I believe Beth went to work for The Patriots, but that's seven years ago now!

When I was there doing middays, the line up was:

AM drive: Larry Kruger
10 - 2pm Me (matching WSNE's numbers!)
2 - 7pm Vic Martin
7 - late lol I cant remember!

I know for a while, Bonnie was with The Hawk, before she sidestepped to LiteRock 105, and Jim, who is the voice for Fox/WPRI was on air, but the time frame involved escpaes me. Scott Cook(e) was also with The Hawk, before he became a producer at WPRO-AM.

The true irony is I was asked to train Ken Jackson on Dr Enco, prior to me leaving!

Regards!

I forget who was doing mid days at WSNE, but I'm pretty sure they were live the entire shift....just goes to show that the talent is at the bottom of the food chain, even though we think we are top shelf....

I applaud your numbers, Geoff.....

I remember what happened to Larry. He wasn't treated well. Yes, he was Salty's sidekick, and that cut him a break with Citadel, with mornings at the Hawk, and then fill in at Lite, and finally, reporting the traffic for WPRO (and every now and then, David Belager thanks "Larry" for many a traffic tip...I wonder...),
but unfortunately, the building is not called the "Kreuger Broadcasting Center".

I am sure Ken Jackson realized that if Citadel was going to let an icon like Larry go for Ken to do mornings, and then eventually mornings at Z100, that the opportunity was going to be an incredibly, short lived on...especially dealing with The Hawk/Z100 Promotions department....

And it was a bad scene for you to train someone else that was eventually going to take over for you, Geoff....

Happens every day in this market....too many cases to cite.

As far as WSNE, what timeframe are we talking about as Jack Casey was doing Middays (I believe) when I left the Trail early 1996

i dont think jack casy ever held an air shift while at wsne.... if i recall he just filled in..i think it was steve york but i could be wrong

I remember Jack had a regular shift as I was doing clock monitoring at that time...york was definitely on the air as well (if I remember correctly to, they had brought in Donna Mac for a book or 2; but that didn't last long)...I wish I still had my notes lying around; but alas, they are long gone. Maybe Jack had afternoon drive.....Things that make you go HMMMM

Why Ken Jackson went Solo.....

The story goes that after Day Three of "Jackson, Freak, and Foxx", in March 2000, some 'programming' that was meant to solicit listeners didn't agree with the programming style of Dr. Casey.....

"I'll throw you guys under a bus to save my career" was the exact quote Jack had said to the boys......

Any Program Director who says that to their morning show needs to seriously consider why he, at 50 years plus, remained in the broadcasing business, instead of the Chiropractic field.....

That, along with Joey and the Freak creating a hostile working environment in a 5' by 7' studio, left Ken with a decision to walk from mornings, and let the Foxx and the Freak to fend for themselves....

Ken was called back to do mornings solo, since Joey couldn't jock his way out of a paper bag, and left Andy to crawl back to Gio and Kim to ask for his yellow suit back....

Ken continued on for 6 months, doing the best he could, all the while with Promotions gunning for him, writing inappropriate giveaway promotion memos, and finally getting fired for posting a picture of Joey from his "Flock of Seagul" days on the studio wall.....that picture was posted on the old Providence Radio message board, during those days immediately after Mighty Mike took over for Ken

It was amazing and almost unbelievable when Ken told me this story, and to this day, still is unbelievable!
I'm still good friends with Ken, who is out of the radio business, and doing just fine in the insurance industry....

Jack Casey, at last report, was programming Emerson College's radio station.....the Freak, bussing at a fine dining establishment in Vermont, and Joey....well once you go "Hot 106....."

Radio turned into an "anybody with a pulse can crack a mic and host his own show" industry.....

Here's to, "I aaaaaammmm DAVID SIMPSON, and I've got the most music and prizes for YOOOOOUUUU to win!"

I believe for a majority of the time Z100 was on the air, Melissa (a.k.a Melissa B., or Melissa Moran, now at 93.3 WFLZ Tampa) was on the air 9P-12A, 7 days a week, not Nancy Hall. Nancy Hall was doing weekend shifts on PRO-FM for a while during the same time period. At least that's how I remember things when I was working over there... I could be mistaken though, I try and block out most of that period of employment from memory... :D
