I just heard from Buddy Baron a few days ago -- he's part of the Breakfast Club at B95 in Laurel-Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

He left KMEL and was at WKTU New York doing afternoons, then back out here at KBLX and then at XM Satellite for quite awhile. Not sure if he's still at XM.

The Emperor, who retired in 1994 after many years at KYA and KSFO/KYA-FM, is now living in Kauai, Hawaii.

Re: what ever happened to... KSFO lineup circa 1971-74?

KSFO was a great signal into Yuba City/Marysville in the early 1970's.

While everybody else might have been listening to KFRC, 610, San Francisco, KROY, 1240, KNDE/KXOA 1470, KZAP, 98.5, Sacramento or KSFM, 102.5 Woodland "Earth Radio 102",I was lunching with Gene Nelson, (Who did mornings? I've forgotten.) and laughing my a... off with Terry McGovern and Dan Sorkin afternoons and evenings.

What was that bit that Sorkin did with "stump the rabbit"?

And the news was timely, well written and produced. Influenced what I did in the radio news business.

I worked briefly with former KSFO ND Chet Casselman when he was ND at KFBK in the early 1980's. He was also teaching college classes in the Bay Area.

Jeff Skov, the late Sam Broadnax (whom I recall was a Marysville expatriate)and others I can't remember now really helped sell the impression that "KSFO News is Everywhere!"

And I'd still like to get a copy of the KSFO news music. That's still the best newscast intro I've heard.

There was a lot of support behind the scenes for the people who were on the air. Kudos to them for getting and keeping the station the great place to work and listen that it was.

Re: what ever happened to... KSFO lineup circa 1971-74?

> Yes. KSFO was still owned at that point by the singing cowboy Gene Autry (Golden West Broadcasters). Don Sherwood was famous there, though I think he self destructed in the late 60s. I grew up with their LA sister station KMPC - Gary Owens, Geoff Edwards, Roger Carroll and many other greats. Jim Lange seemed to bounce between KMPC and KSFO. And yes - a great news department too. Autry had his detractors, but he spent money on his station, hired great management, and was loyal to his staff. It showed. I think it was a compliment that many young people like myself listened to the station. It was the talent - certainly not the music (Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, etc), which I didn't learn to appreciate until much later.

What ever happened to Terry McGovern? In the mid 80s, he was on K-101, and used to come into a store I ran in Marin County. Nice guy.

Those were great days. I loved KSFO. Dan Sorkin's son is working on a ST. Louis station.

Yes. KSFO was still owned at that point by the singing

Ted replied:

That's who. I didn't catch much of the morning show... but went to lunch with Gene Nelson's sign-off. I swear, singing along with that stunted my development.

(Trivia question: What WAS Nelson's sign off?)

Ted,

There are several great old KSFO broadcasts at the Bay Area Radio Museum website, including a 1961 Don Sherwood, a 1970 Jim Lange, and a 1971 Terry McGovern. Click on the "Stations" button and scroll down to KSFO.

The Lange and McGovern broadcasts include several newscasts with that memorable intro tune.

On the "Jingles" page, you'll find many of the famous KSFO theme songs, including the "Sounds Of The City" package and the Mel Torme "Fog" series, plus many more that you'll instantly recall.

I also have a Dan Sorkin broadcast and a Giants-Cubs game with Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons from KSFO that are still in the editing phase, among other classic KSFO pieces. I'll have them up on the museum site shortly.

Terry McGovern is still a voiceover star (he recorded one of the museum's disclaimers, too). His website and contact page are at http://www.terrymcgovern.com (duh).

> I don't know for sure what Nelson's sign off was. But he was "Emperor Nelson" on KYA (before KSFO). KYA shared a lot of drop-ins and bits with their sister station - KRLA in Los Angeles. "Emperor" Bob Hudson's sign off was "Get off the freeway peasants - his Highness is Coming."

Terry McGovrn pitching furniture on KRON-TV

This morning I saw Terry McGovern in a promo for some furniture show at 10:30AM on the Morning News on KRON4. At least the guy looked like him. Sad isn't it?

Paul,

Sad? No, it's called putting food on the table. It's no sadder than going to a "regular job" and working eight hours a day to pay the rent. It's what he does.
