What ever happened to....

Can anyone here tell me where Steve Tyler is? I've always enjoyed listening to Steve, he has a great voice. I remember hearing Steve on Power 102 in Jonesboro. Boy do I miss that station. Then Later at Thunder Country in Blytheville. I moved away for a couple of years and Steve wasn't there anymore. I'd really appreciate it.

Hey, double m...dennis rogers here...i know where steve tyler is and i'm gonna tell 'ya...but, first...i had the pleasure to hiring him and working with him when i was the p.d. at power-102....boy, do I ever miss that station! Anwyway....when Larry Duke bought power-102 and kbtm-am steve walked out the front door that day! He'd had a bad experience with Duke Media over at KFIN-FM. He went to work in blytheville and stayed there for a few years. Now he's doing nights and production-director duties at Pollack's KTMO-FM in Kennett, Missouri. The station phone number is 800-582-1055. I've tried to get him to come back to Jonesboro a couple of times but he won't budge. He seems pretty happy at KTMO. And you are correct...he's a great guy and really good on the air and in prod. Hope this solves that little delima....By the way, how 'bout sending me a resume and air check...I'm the pd for East Arkansas Broadcasters KWHF-FM, 95-9 the Wolf....EAB bought four stations from cc in May. We really could use a good female on air, etc....if yoiu're interested just forward your info to my e-mail at: [email protected]. Thanks, oldmanriver

Hmmmm....the last time I checked Steve Tyler was working with Aeorosmith......

Hey, Double M....old man river here in jonesboogie...can't get my reply working on my outlook today so, just to let you know you are more than welcome for the info on steve tyler. We get production from him for the Cinema 8 in Paragould and he's still just as good as ever in the prod room. I'm serious about you getting an aircheck to me...when you feel comfortable with it. Keep up the hard work and never lose your dream! It's all good....dennis

Wow......hmmmmm...now I finally know why it took Aeorosmith so long to make a follow up to their 1989 "Pump" album. We now know that Steve Tyler had a radio gig in.....JONESBORO ARKANSAS!!!!!!!!!!And not only that....but that he walked aout the door!!!!!! That would explain why no new Aeorosmith music was out between 1990-93!!!!!!!!! I find it funny how "Old Man River" tells us that he is just as good as ever in the production room....Of Course he is .....HE IS STEVEN TYLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man - I heard all these jokes like 15 years ago. And ya Steve was great guy to work with. I do remember that day he walked out - he did it without even blinking an eye.

Thanks Zeke, the lame jokes are getting old. Anyway, that takes some guts to just walk out that quick. Steve's experience must have been pretty bad. And yes Zeke I remember alot of you guys from 102. I miss that kind of format. Someone should do it again. Radio was good then.

Alright fellas, I wanna know about some stuff here. I lived in jonesboro from June 93-June 95. When I first got there, KZ-100 was on the air as kind of a weird all-over -the place CHR format, and 102 was a very boring Hot AC. I remember seeing bumper stickers for a "Power 102" and was always curious. Still am..What was the station like?????WHen did it go off the air????Was KZ-100 on at the same time????? I do remember that the signal for 101.9 was very strong...I recall picking it up in Harrison in the summer of 96"

hey, diz guy....dennis rogers here and some of the dates have been changed to protect the innocent but i was the pd of both superhits-102 (boring ac) and power-102 (great radio station). kz-100 was basically in default in the years you were in town and when power 102 signed on the air we had state of thea rt studios, texar audio processing, a 994 tall stick "the tower of power" a great lookin' remote van and a great staff including myself, phil jamison, jennifer reed, zeke terry, steve tyler and doug miller. those were the best 6 years of my radio career...bar none...we had a ton of fun and our listeners loved our 'hybrid' chr format that leaned a bit to the rock side. music was dayparted so we could keep the females listening at work but at night we rocked out a bit. i remember getting a platinum record award from electra records for metallica's black album....after 9 pm we played metallica and it worked. formats like that just don't exist, to my knowledge, these days and that too bad. we listened to our audience and our sales people understood how to sell our product. then, in i think '96 the patteson family decided to sell out to duke media...he sold to cumulus...they sold to clear channel and they sold to east arkansas broadcasters in may of this year. clear channel still owns 101.9 and is moving it to memphis in about 6 months or so, actually city of license will be crawfordsville, ar. pop. 867...just across the muddy mississippi...now, kz-100 is part of saga and is called the eagle 100.5 with a classic hits format. ok? dennis rogers

Ah, so good reading all this. in October 1991 Dennis hired me at Power 102 where I did overnights for about a year, into the horrible transition into Kiss-FM. And yeah, I was in the meeting when the staff was told about the sale to Duke. Several minutes into the meeting Larry Duke walked in the door and as I recall, he made eye contact with Steve Tyler, said "hello Steve" and Steve just made a bee line for the door. It was indeed quite a moment. I'm sorry for plugging my own web site, but you can read my take on Power 102 at:

And see photos of many of the staffers, including Steve at:

Yeah, it was sad to see Power 102 die. I saved the promo card that we had to read on the air announcing the change.

By chance I met with Zeke Terry for the first time in 15 years earlier this week for lunch when I was driving through Memphis. I forgot how tall that guy is! He picked up the tab, so I owe you Zeke! He also had lots of good stories that I didn't remember until he mentioned them. But we were commenting how good it is to see Dennis and Phil still on the air in Jonesboro. I saw them a couple of years ago. What a business...

Jonesboro was very interesting during that time. I was at KZ100 from 91 to 93. We were all over the place. I can remember hearing a Yanni song during mid days. In the afternoon we did a drive time one hour classic rock thing. At night I took it CHR. Good times, good times.

OK, since there are a lot of Jonesboro alums here...what was the name of the GM who came to Jonesboro (I don't know what station) from being the GM at KKYK Little Rock about 1989 or 90? And whatever became of him?

I worked for him in LR for just a bit...nice guy, but we had, um...different interpretations of the same contract.

RADIOSAUR...HIS NAME WAS JIM GRANT AND WE HAD A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION ON HOW TO DO RADIO...PERIOD...THAT'S WHY I GOT OUT FOR TWO YEARS AFTER DUKE BOUGHT THOSE TWO STATIONS. GRANT AND I NEVER, EVER SAW EYE TO EYE ON ANYTHING...EXCEPT WE BOTH LIKE STRONG COFFEE. LAST I HEARD HE WAS IN LITTLE ROCK WORKING FOR A RELIGIOUS GROUP ON CABLE TV. DENNIS

After working with Jim in Jonesboro I would again work with him a couple of years later, around 95 or 96, when he did some kind of sales for Snider Corporation, which owned KARN and the Arkansas Radio Network. The company had sold KKYK by that time, but it was in the same building where he had once been GM. Seemed like a nice enough guy, but I never worked that closely with him.
