What exactly does the WRAL-FM PD do all day?

I was talking to a buddy who is still in radio. We started naming the PD's of all the major Raleigh stations and noticed all of them do an air shift except the PD at WRAL-FM. Lisa McKay (WQDR), Randy West (G105), Adam Gold (WCMC), Cy Young (WFXC), Chris Shebel (KISS 93.9), Foster (96.1 rock), Brian Freeman (WPTF), Julie Garza (La Ley) and Brian Taylor (100.7) all do an air shift and program their stations. Barry Fox does not. The air staff there is dull and lifeless. They are syndicated at night and track overnights. They don't do any promotions to speak of. Their ratings are fairly good but nothing you would call dominant. What the hell does that guy do all day?

WRAL still plays "Black Horse and Cherry Tree" and "Collide" to death as if they were still currents. You're right, their PD doesn't really do much all day, does he?

"What the hell does that guy do all day?"

Well, first of all he got the job. Passed their stringent hiring process. (Could YOU pass that drug test?)

Sometimes it takes more discipline and experience to stay the course (not tinkering).

He may spend much of his time dealing with the GM and sales, or coddling a veteran air staff.

Ponders how his is the ONLY AC station in the nation where the numbers went DOWN playing Christmas music.

Spends hours in his office, daydreaming of meeting John Tesh's wife.

Runs errands for Bill Jordan
Creates video mashups of Lynda and Sherrie for comparisons
Thinks of acronyms for WRAL
Fields calls asking to speak to Inskeep
Plotting and devising repurchase of the AM!

I was gonna say
Keeps the seat warm and candles lit for Delilah
but I forgot it's Tesh's seat. I guess it could still work though.

The bigger question is "what exactly does anyone do at WRAL-FM all day?" If you have ever been there it is like walking through a women's store in Cameron Village...or a church.

When I was Capitol, it was all about "meetings." Two or three meetings a day, just to be meeting, and going out to lunch everyday with one of the sales people. And, of course, you had to wear a tie, except on Fridays. Fridays, go out to lunch and not come back until the Monday Meeting at 9:30.

I heard that first song yesterday in the car and thought of this thread.

WRAL-FM is the most boring radio stations in NC. They should just go full-time automated, 'cause the card reading by the air-staff is painfully obvious - even to my non-radio biz wife.

It's a shame, because there have been so many talented jocks there. But 'RAL-FM is all about sales (and meetings). You can't rock the boat with a free-thinking jock or P.D.

Gold isn't a PD anymore....just a show host. Dave Shore is the PD/Opps Dir for 99.9 and 620.

Why would they put Shore in charge of anything? All he's done is run off talent, waste a fortune, plug in some networks and never get ratings. Hmmmmm, come to think about it, that would qualify him for more responsibilities.
