What Format Has Memphis Radio Never Really Tried?

I was wondering what format(s), if any, has never really been tried in Memphis radio or if it has never was really given a chance to succeed?

If we eliminate HD channels, I say classic hip-hop. Classic hip-hop has never been tried on standard definition terrestrial radio in Memphis. It is being used on HD radio here.

Perhaps Classic Gregorian Chants?

There are some formats that Memphis (and other localities, too, for that matter) haven't tried lately, like big band and beautiful music, the latter of which began to fall out of favor in the early '90s. Memphis had WEZI, which contrary to popular opinion, was not named for George Jefferson's wife "Weezy." ;D

On terrestrial radio? Did they?

There is, of course, the Elvis Channel on Sirius/XM. I know some of the guys who work there. Pretty well.

I seem to recall that WHBQ briefly (very briefly!) tried a heavy metal format in the evening hours back in the late '80s. I remember thinking even then that that was awfully late to be trying such a format on AM station, especially such a young-skewing format.

From what I recall WHBQ did play hard rock and heavy metal during its peak and I think the ratings were actually pretty good for that but it only ran in the late evenings and the ratings the rest of the day were pretty bad. I remember they had a really good deejay who called herself Roxie. If I am not mistaken, she later on was Dana Michaels on local radio.

That would be Dana Daniels, now in STL.

But I can’t believe no one remembers the HARD format on all those low-powered AM stations a while back. There was even a thread about it.
