What format is WQFM?

I'm just outside the market but tuned in back in MAy and heard an odd mix of AC and CHR. Last night, right before 10pm, I listened to 92.1 and heard a Rap/Hip Hop show that shocked me. Maybe it was another station bleeding in, I don't know, but I could barely understand the people on the air. They were speaking English, sort of. Though I felt like I had received a transmission from another planet. Is this what WQFM has on at night?

Maybe another station. QFM doesn't have a night jock, and they advertise a 'time to chill' format at night. Though overnight, I have heard songs such as City High's "What Would You Do" and questioned how it made the format...especially during the chill hours.

QFM does have a night jock, I heard him Wednesday night, his name is Randy!

Ah. OK. Sorry about that. Don't listen too too often. Just catch liners all the time I guess!

Heard the same thing. And a reliable source says the "quits" and the long delay in finding a PD goes back to the subject of this post. No one in charge can explain just what that format is to prospective employees.

If you were to judge the station by their web site, you would think they were a traditional AC format. It's basically a one page site but the first thing you see is the image of a happy family. However , not all the songs fall into that "family friendly" category. I get the impression that someone ( a consultant?) had a seed of an idea for a format and that those in charge have done NOTHING with it. You hear the potential to be unique and stand out. The music selection is not that bad but poor execution, amateurish DJs and no strong imaging are a few things that prevent the station from creating an emotional bond with the listener. If this is what they've done with live jocks then maybe a stab at a "Jack", "Ben", "Bob", "Fred", "Seymor" or "Roger" jockless shuffle format would get the same results. Eh, what do I know?

This market is pretty zipped up in terms of viewer loyalty, and prying away a huge chunk from an existing format for a new one is a daunting task, if it can be done at all. Management is always looking for that underserved audience, but with so many signals in this market, is there such a thing? Personally? They should've stuck with oldies and at least some live talent, like Mike Neff in the AM.

The format is relatively "Hot AC". They play songs from the 80's, 90's, and today similiar to the other stations you hear on Y 106.5 from Bloomsburg. Their slogan is that "no rap and no hard rock" makes the station enjoyable for everyone to listen to, and it's much better than the garbage they put on KRZ.

KRZ, years ago before they include rap and hip-hop, was a decent station. I went to Officemax and the furniture store and they had this station on over the intercom. Now the managers are afraid to pump in KRZ because they play too many rap songs, and some inapproriate stuff during the Jumpin' Jeff Walker show.
(Good thing I recorded some old KRZ airchecks when they played the segment during Sat. Night Live at the Oldies last year, they were decent then.)

To make it short, you can even say "It's the old-fashioned KRZ without the rap music"!
