What format *should* KABC-790 have

As for getting younger audiences interested in talk programming, that's called podcasting, and since you can swear on the internet and the commercial reads are less frequent they're perceived as more "authentic."

Kinda says something about the "younger audiences" that swearing makes the difference between authentic and not.

Plus they can listen on their own time. Time-shifting has really become the way people want to consume media, whether it's TV or radio.

Exactly. I like a number of NPR programs, but the broadcast times are mostly inconvenient for me, so I listen to them on podcast.

Big A: That's what I do. On my commute to work this morning I was listening to the over the air signal of 88.5 FM (KSBR) going north on the 5 and 405 heading out of Mission Viejo. In Irvine the HD1 signal started to deteriorate so I had my iPhone XR plugged in and went to the Tune In app to hear them clearly. The thought occurred to me that eventually (would you agree?) consumers will have their auto equipped (factory-installed or otherwise) with the Internet or apps like Tune In already in their audio system. Maybe with voice-control as well. "Play 88 5 FM Mission Viejo" or speak "play WDJO Cincinnati". Or "play Radio Paradise". I hardly ever listen to anything over the air and many times I will listen to recorded broadcasts from Tune In or Spotify in my car. What do you think, Big A? David Eduardo? How many years away are we from this? Over the air radio will be just one of many platforms people can use. I still have to look at my cell phone and hold it and touch the tune in app to get the listening happening. Automation should be just around the corner.

Depends on the market, As you point out, LA is very spread out, so some traditional signals don't cover the market. But I can tell you that there are some areas of the country (in fact some areas of California) that have either no cell service or very spotty cell service, and the only signal people can receive is broadcast or satellite.

Yes that makes sense. Of course if one is listening to a recording they made on their cell phone on Tune In Radio I believe they can still play it.

It’s amazing that KABC gets so much attention on this board when 99.5 percent of the market audience isn’t listening to the station at any given moment. This market is getting boring.

When you can say "****" instead of wiener.
When you can say "bullshit" instead of baloney.
When you can say "*****" and you're not talking about a weakling... Yes, that's authentic. ("colorful" language used to illustrate the topic at hand. Don't flag, please.)

Go to a movie. Watch HBO. Listen to Cardi B. This is the world that today's young people are living in. Not the Ozzy & Harriet twin bed world of yore. Not being hamstrung by a government agency or a bunch of blue hairs in Tarpon Springs, Florida typing letters to clients, allows for a great deal of authenticity in the world of podcasting. It is 2019 after all.

I am not a big fan of the Ozzie and Harriet life either, but if I had to pick between Cardi B. and O&H, sorry O&H would win every time. I have never equated cussing with "authentic" and I know that there are even a lot of Millennials that feel the same way.

It is an inferior mind that cannot phrase an idea without resorting to gutter language.

A good generation separator is to watch Cardi B's "Twerk" video.

Return KABC-AM License to the FCC? if no buyers IE such as EMF Broadcasting from Rocklin, CA wants to be in the running for more stations.

Note EMF has 100.3 FM Los Angeles and is not in the running for 790AM.

The audience for that is small, unsalable and/or dead.

With the greatest respect, I'm not sure I would consider the audience small, unstable or dead.

KIXI-AM in Seattle, owned and operated by Hubbard manages to create an interesting blend of old school community focused programming.

Variety retro music. Local public service programming as well as syndicated. Some sports. A considerable amount of evening OTR programming. Sure the audience blend is older, but it has cache that does translate to revenue and community service. It pays dividends in my experience because it carries to the other stations in group and into the business community. Will it makes heaps of money on its own. No. But it will make money. Yes.

So it begs this question. More modern audio drama programming and comedy is surging on other platforms among younger demographics. Combined with contemporary music format aimed at younger demo, could you see the reset and the return full service modern variety station?

Also I do agree David Eduardo's observation that the demos of Los Angeles might require something more fitting and targeted. Thanks for discussion and raising the observation.

KIXI's audience is all over 65. And it is about 33rd in revenue. I would imagine that it makes a tiny profit, and shares some of the expenses,

In LA, owner Sol Levine loves the format. He has tried to make it live on an AM, but had to give up and do something more "youthful" which is 60's oldies. LA is way to expensive and hostile for retired folks so if they have any money at all, they leave. Not to say that there are no elderly folks, but there are less... and much, much less as a percentage of the market than Seattle, since LA is 70% ethnic or first generation immigrants.

EMF does not use AMs. If they get one in a deal for an FM, it is gone in a New York minute.

790 would be of value for a variety of foreign language formats, but not Spanish.

I think the fact that Saul has moved his "Unforgettable" format to an HD-2 of a non-comm (KKJZ, which is owned by Cal State Long Beach, but managed and operated by Saul's Mt. Wilson Broadcasters) speaks volumes.
