What format will V 100 flip to?

Bonneville bought V 100. Hopefully Bonneville will keep Urban AC in 100.3 FM. This station is different. We don't need an FM news talk station.

What does the future hold for this station?

I would give 100% certainty to Bonneville changing the format. Radio One is changing because they could not find a way to make 100.3 profitable, so the conclusion is easy.

Watch out KOST or watch out KIIS !!

Bonneville no longer does top 40... their board of directors hasn't allowed it. They blew up SF with over a 2 share.

From a rock standpoint, even their Classic Rock and Alternative stations are very safe - nothing with overly objestional lyrics.

They could do an AC format ... but I still believe News/Talk to be a front runner.

My guess is an AC to compete "directly" with KOST or a Top 40 (like WHTZ) to compete "directly" with KIIS.

Not going to do top 40... They won't put anything on that incorporates hip-hop. They spent $70 million for an FM in Phoenix and sent the format (hip-hop) packing.

I think N/T is not as likely as some people think. The LA Market is already saturated, and one thing to note is that Bonneville has not created a news talker on FM. All of their FM Moves (SLC, Phoenix, DC) were of existing AM Talkers over to FM (or simulcast in the case of SLC. In the one place where they have created a Talk station in recent decades (WWWT 1500), they have gone almost all syndicated, and I think that would be a waste for a Class B FM stick in LA. I think creating a locally driven N/T station from the ground up is too expensive for Bonneville, especially considering the amount of cash they're paying for just the signal.

I would bet on a cheaper (music) format for 100.3, and I think what would make the most sense is Soft AC/ Easy Listening. Something like the old WSNI in Philly is what I'm thinking. Such a station is in an area of expertise for Bonneville (perhaps the area of expertise for Bonneville), and would be able to carve out a niche from KRTH, KOST, and KTWV (and KCBS-FM to a lesser extent) listeners. The demos would be north of 35, but I think with appropriate era bias (Roughly 15% 60s, 40% 70s, 35% 80s, and 10% 90s is about what I'm thinking), demos could be held under 55. The hole exists there more than any other non-spanish Music Format in LA, aside from taking on KROQ or KIIS (which are not at all likely from B-ville.) Such a format would also be much cheaper and easier to run than a News/Talker.

Interesting thought, but why enter the LA market only to launch a "cliff hanger" format. When I mean cliff hanger is...not to sound mean,,,but the audience just seems to be getting older and older and less desirable to advertisers. Oldies, Standards, Beautiful Music are or have been cliff hanger audience.

I remember a few years back, the programmer at B/EZ KCTC/Sacramento commented that everytime he saw a hearse drive by, he said...there goes another one of my listeners. Sad comment, but unfortunately that and the fact that while people are living much longer and the good chunk of the baby boomers are now well into the over 55 category, that demo is undesirable to ad agencies. I'm really surprised by how much.

David, you have a lot of insight on this. It almost seems all 18-54 or nothing. Amazing...

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is the oldies format. The reason I say this is that they like to "play it safe" as they are owned by the LDS Church. I'm not exactly sure if it would be a smart move, unless they were able to redefine the oldies format or go in a different direction than what KRTH is already doing now.

If you mean "older" oldies, forget it. Not salable in a transactional market like LA:

Bonneville wont do Rhythmic. But they will do Adult CHR. They will do Hot AC, AC, Classic Hits, Classic Rock, News Talk, Oldies, etc.

I wouldnt completely rule out CHR as a possibility. Its one of the few formats that you can do with stand - alone. They know that KIIS is extremely vulnerable, and they could take it down from #2 to #7 or #8 if done right. And they could pull some strings with some very big talent.

But it wont be a straight up CHR, it would sound very similar to WKRQ in Cincinnati with some flare.

Im not saying they will do CHR, but they might just surprise you.

Bonneville is smart, they will do research and they will spend money.

^^^^

A Hot AC-leaning CHR is very possible. Bonneville ran Star 102.7 here and it was really leaning CHR in its final days (but not rhythmic).

The only reason they killed it was to duplicate KSL on FM.

Really? Don't tell that to Citadel since "True Oldies" will be on KLOS this June.

Some seem to be ruling out News/Talk - I won't put this format idea out to pasture. Yes they have moved or simulcasted some of their AM news/talkers over to FM - and doing this format in Los Angeles is certainly an opportunity. The type of programming they do is completely different from KSLX and offering it in a static free, clear signal would give it an edge over both KFWB and KNX, let alone KABC and KFI. Bonneville has dedicated resources to building its triple play in Washington include newest FM talker (WWFT if I remember), its newstalker WTOP AM/FM and its creatively programmed station for fed employees - WFED. Those three stations certainly take a tremedous budget and certainly must be offering a payback in revenue for a company to continue investing in those products. Talk or News/Talk on FM is a long term committment and Bonneville appears to be the kind of company willing to invest time, effort and investment cash into such ventures. Not saying they will...but don't rule it out.

Should they do it...would Clear Channel counted by simulcasting KFI on an FM? Just a thought...

No offense to you but I find that hard to believe. Exactly why would they dump classic rock for real oldies?

Yes, I think that most listeners in this market who are looking for 1955 to 1965 music (including myself) have already abandoned AM/FM for internet and satellite radio where such formats abound. Also you could try streaming from stations in markets where that format still works.

Unless you work for Citadel-ABC, could you tell me how you know this?
