What format would do well in Atlanta right now?

If you had 100,000 watts to play with in the metro ATL market, what would you do with it?

I, personaly, think that an adult alternative station would do well, but what do I know?

Isn't that kinda what Dave FM is?

That's EXACTLY what Dave is. ;D

I must have a different definition than you do of what alternative means.
I personally think that a local talk format might work. Of course, the pd's that decided to go with this would screw it up.

Non-political talk, urban talk, female targeted talk would work too. That settles it, research will show a hole for non-personality-based "oldies!"

talk, local, non-politcal or light political.
I was one of the few to listen to whatever it was 105.3?
there's enough music

Define "do well". And while you're at it, I think I might want a time frame to reach that goal.

No, seriously. I'm not trying to bust your chops or anything, it's just that I'm not really convinced that there's any format that could be brought into the market and instantly become a, say, top 5 station. And just having a big stick isn't going to do it I'm almost certain. It's going to take an awful lot of money poured into promoting the station to overcome the entrenched stations. And IMO it's going to take the ability to lose money while getting there.

Now, if the standard for "do well" is lower, maybe top 15, then the possibilities are a little better. But I'd wait until all the flips are finished (I'm betting that CC has at least one more to go) before deciding. There's definitely a chance for a new #2 Country station in the market, and if they don't take that chance then that would be a good choice (IF you can afford the time it takes to get there). If they go that route, then there's obviously an opening for a #2 AC that could be built rather quickly I would think.

An eclectic mix of every possible kind of music from punk to Pavarotti with bird calls on the half hour and Al Franken in the afternoon.

How long did it take WPZE (7900 watts) to break into the top 5? How high has it gone?

Also The River.

Yep. And that was then and this isnow. The opportunities they had aren't the same today as they were at the time those stations emerged.

What about a Hot AC format or if that won't work what about moving News to FM. Maybe CBS Radio could make Dave FM, Altanta's News Station on FM.

How about a Jack FM station (also referred to as adult hits, Pat, Bob, and other variations). http://www.varietyhits.com/variety/ This provides more variety than Dave, and it has worked well in some large markets and many smaller ones. Also, the Movin' format may have potential but there would probably be too much overlapping of music with Star 94 or Q 100.

I don't listen to Dave as much as I used to (got an XM receiver for my car last Christmas, and it has changed my life!) What i recall from Dave is that it was basically a classic rock station with a bit more variety thrown in. I guess when i say adult alternative, I am thinking of something like WDST Radio Woodstock in New York, which stays away from the classic rock stuff for the most part and instead plays a much broader variety of music.

I understand that this is not very realistic if you are shooting for bog books in today's radio-world mess. However, it is some wishful thinking on my part.

Depends on what you mean by "do well"? I think we need more niche programming in this market. Every station is trying to be number 1. How about just trying to fill a void and get loyal listeners and advertisers?
I would like to see, hear, an alternative country format. With the likes of Shooter Jennings, Nicklecreek, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Warren Bros., Randy Rogers Band, etc. Hell, alot of the Organic X playlist could even fit on this format. Stuff like Ben Harper, KT Tunstill, Jewel, etc.
Nobody in this town is willing to take that chance and not play Tim Mcrgraw 10 time a day along with Faith and Carrie Underwood and all the other lame, but popular acts. Which, by the way, are only popular because they get played. If someone will step up to the plate, this other stuff could be popular too.

I agree on the alternative country format.
I think you could own males 25-54 with a well programmed AND positioned alt country station. I would play some of the older , west coast folks, like Emmylou, Gramm Parsons,Kinky Friedman, etc.
But to work.....many $$ ad campaign, correct positioning, and patience!
