As one of the many former GM's of Next Media, let me say first, there are GREAT people there. That said, corporate has made some decisions that makes one wonder at times. The one that surprises me the most was how they took the launch of Thunder Country (which I was a part of)in what looked to me, as if they were lying down. Now I know Jeff Dinetz (Prez of Next) reads these boards and likes to speculate who is who. I enjoy Jeff personally but he was the hardest person I have ever worked for. It got to the point after three years of giving my all, first as a GSM then as GM, that it wasn't worth working in a company that didn't reward or motivate in a positive way. When you dread going to work in the morning you know it is time.
Remember, sometimes as a GM you have people who are great on the air but do bone headed things off the air that allow you no choice but to let them go their own way. (that may or may not have happened at Rock) Also remember the tough financial times radio is having everywhere, no I don't think HD is the answer, I think the web is a part of the puzzle, I think compelling local content is part of the puzzle. Roy Williams (the wizard of ads) speculates that radio will all be network driven like TV is very soon. I really think it is doing what we ask our customers to do, spend real hard dollars on marketing their products. As Sam Walton of Walmart said "if you stop inviting people to your store, they'll stop coming." Radio has stopped inviting people to their store, they just assume that they will come as they always have, well we know that world is gone...forever. Good Luck to you all, I enjoy reading your posts.
