What Happened to BHT?

So, I've been out of NEPA for awhile now, and visited recently...

I've noticed that BHT has changed some...

1: What happen to the morning show with Jen and AJ on BHT?
2: Why is AJ on in the afternoons?
3: What happened to Jen?
4: Who is this new person on in the AM?
5: Is the new morning show syndicated show?

I heard that they would not renew Jenn's contract. Yes the new morning show is syndicated. Yes AJ is on in the aftenoons from 3pm to 7pm. He is also the new PD and Marino who was doing on in the afternoons from 2pm to 7pm is now on from 10am to 3pm.

Works for me!

Thanks!

The morning show is a great example of much ado about nothing. They talk about show-biz, sports, their local hang-outs and opinions... but none of it matters. It's not our sports team, our local hang-outs or opinions that matter in this area. They fade in and out of commercial breaks. I've listened for two days now. The promo the hell out of stuff they're going to do and hour or two later. Hey, I'm not going to tune in and listenb for two hours for your "tease" to dissapoint me. This show will last less than one year.. which is actually 11 months too long.

Just long enough for Citadel to streamline operations and dump the whole Wilkes-Barre cluster

You know with Citidel advertising for 979x WEEKEND Jocks at $7.15 an hour and the new shift to total automation, the state of radio in the valley is in total shambles. The ad in the Weekender for jocks makes working at Elbys seem more profitable. But as it says you do "get to hit on chicks when they call the request line"! Ohhh.. can I apply?

Yeah well why are we surprised? Anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together who happens to be in radio knows that it is rife with venal, lying, moneygrubbing miscreants and malcontents. And those with less than two brain cells comprise the majority of that group. I can count on one hand (with at least one finger extra) the decent, honorable, and conscientious people I have known in radio. It's a pit. I occasionally have kids ask me what's the best way to get into the business. I tell them not to even try, work on a garbage truck if you have to, you'll meet a nicer class of people.

There is a reason that I got out. When the part time wage for jocks has stayed pretty much the same for the past 10 years, something is wrong. Why radio managers think it is ok to pay people about the same as minimum wage is beyond me. In this day and age, there are many jobs out there that are far more cool than radio. Hell, a kid can make a video in his bedroom and get more attention in a week than a part time radio DJ making $7.15 an hour can get in a year.

"Welcome to radio. You will be on the air live for 4 hours and then we want you to babysit the automation for the other four stations in the building. You better make yourself available seven days a week because if you don't want this job, there is somebody else out there who will want it."

I'm glad I'm not hanging on to be that guy waiting for the job.

That pretty much sums it all up. It's the old retail management mentality "You are all a dime a dozen and easily replaced".

As far as using hitting on chicks on the request line as a BENEFIT...... unless you're a chubby-chaser, what is so beneficial about that????????????? ::)

As much as reading your comment bothers me, I can't argue it's validity. We've become a business where we eat our young and throw out our old.The bigger cities at least pay a bit more for these type jobs( 20. an hr for weekend part time, for example), there seems to be less turnover and ruthlessness. I still say if they love the business and can swim with the sharks they can have a career in sales. Some of those make it to management and they tend to be the ones that "get it".
Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson said it best with their plea to parents..." Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys, don't let'em play gi-tars and ride them old trucks, make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such."

You can say that with television also. Mainly on the local level. For instance, Master Control. You sit there 8 hours a day, babysitting the automation, and for 1.5 hours, you are in control of the automation for the news, otherwise, you sit there and load tapes (or if you are on server, just watch and write down times.)

You can blame two items on the down fall of television and radio: Management & Technology

Yall can't be serious. They put "$7.15 an hour" in the ad? Way to make radio look glamorous.
They should at least have made it seem bigger and said "$2,500 (a year)" or whatever their top pay rate for a year is.
Radio is a shambles.

You guys are taking this too seriously. Do you actually think this is a job search? It's like the "guest DJ" thing that Rock 107 did a couple hundred years ago. You know, you get to be on the air Sunday morning from 6 till 7am for free. It's more a promotion than a job search. Of course, if they find somebody worth it, they may hire them for peanuts. The weekender ad is probably trade.

I do agree that the state of radio is not that great, but when did anyone, besides some rare few, ever make lots of money on air around here? I've known PD's that had to get a second job to support their family. The only thing different is the lack of SWAG (you practically have to pay taxes on the free Christmas party) and the lack of respect management has for "talent". Just a pat on the back used to make you happy when you put in 80 hours a week. It just doesn't seem to be there as much any more, unless they can sponsor it. :)

Previous poster is right about the Christmas party. One year I "won" a 13 inch television. retail probably around $150. It was also the year the bean counters decided we owed taxes on our "gift"..not retail, but the price the station got it for. Mine was traded at Voitek for about 3 times it's value so I got taxed on 520 dollars which went on top of my first 2 week salary in January-actually had a lower than normal paycheck, and to add insult to injury, that was also when they took the most idiotic tax NEPA politicians ever dreamed up-the occupational priviledge tax. After that we would "trade gifts" with new employees, until the bean counters stepped in with a "It's your gift-pay the penalty"..no more trading.

I remember working in Hazleton, when the Sales manager gave us Christmas gifts of a $100 gift certificate at Bartikowski's.. now I think I bought four folding food tray tables.. tables you can probable get a Wal Mart for $20.. a few months after Christmas, he brags about his gift which was a trip to Disneyland for his family of four. A great example of the haves vs have-nots... The PD, all jocks, and staff get overpriced trade outs and basically nothing, while the Sales Manger gets 95% of the pie.
