What happened to country in The Gump?

I realize there are some Charley Pride and Darius Rucker fans out there, but...

The school system is 89% minority; the city proper is 60% minority; the population sample of 290,000+ persons in the city probably represents a large hip-hop and urban gospel audience, if that offers any justification for the decline of country.

My personal opinion? Country music just ain't as good as it was about 15-20 years ago.

that same population used to generate a 15 share 12+ for country. this is a diary placement/sampling issue more than a problem with the music....and therefore you will see it change as Arbitron drops another sample. Happens every two books or so and is called...."small market wobble". That's why many smaller markets use a consolodated 2 sample book.

i dont know anything-- UNLIKE EVERYBODY ELSE ON THESE BOARDS-- i admit i am clueless--

but--

if arbitron still sends out paper diaries and gives people $2 to fill them out-- IN THIS IPOD/FACEBOOK/EMAIL WORLD-- then there is no mystery as to why shares are dwindling on stations with active adults listnieng to them--

sure-- hallalueah will do well-- their audience is old people-- who do nothing but listen to the radio and fill out forms--

i woild assume mix 103 does well-- lotsa office listneing and time to fill one out--

country-- active people working non traditional office jobs-- makes a big differecne in willingness to fill out a form--

WE NEED THE PPM-- BUT THAT SCARES ALOT OF PEOPLE--

that is just my opinion-- i have my opinion as to which country station is better-- but i will keep it to myself-- i am a neutral party--

I like John G don't know it all (that make only two of us John!) but... I have to say... I just don't listen to country. I don't like the music... I don't identify with songs like "check her for ticks"... what the hell is that!!!! really... I'd rather listen to Floyd or Steely Dan.. or Tony Defranko and the Defranko family.... anything else.... no offence to my friends who work for, or own country stations... just don't care for it.

Agreed, Skipper.

Country music basically falls into two categories, anyway -

(1) Traditional cheatin' and drinkin' songs with twangy singin', fiddlin', and steel guitars
(2) "Contemporary" country that sounds like rock and roll from the '70s with digital software of today (vocal correction)

There was a classic country station out of Luverne a few years ago that played straight-up old school country from old records - sounded terrible sometimes but it was real. The new country music sounds like top 40 to me.

Momnpop: The station you're thinking of is WAOQ 100.3 FM. They are still on the air (they were as of April) and still playing traditional country music. I don't believe the sound was horrible necessarily from playing vinyl, but just "crappy" in general like WTOT 101.7 and 99.9 WRJL (which WRJL has cleaned up their audio). WAOQ has also cleaned theirs up some also. Personally, I think if one wants traditional Country music, (not necessarily all about drinking, but with the traditional sound of today and yesterday) and if one is talking about the Montgomery area, the best bet is going to be 93.9 The Eagle in Auburn. Their 12 kW signal from Union Springs isn't city grade, but is listenable, and is locally owned and operated.

Thanks, TALLRED, for the clarification. I remembered 100.3, just not the calls. I agree that 93.9 plays some good stuff - especially if (when) someone wishes to drown their sorrows with a tall cold one!

Usually when I'm traveling through I listen to them from Prattville to Troy. I'm never having a cold one, usually its somewhere around midnight on the way to Florida, chewing Red Man original or Golden Blend (helps me stay awake) or either an ice cold.... 2 liter diet coke, seriously. When they fade out I'll tune in either Q100.3 or either (if it's before midnight) I'll try to tune in to 104.7 WAAZ in Crestview. If that don't work I'll flip it to 94.7 WTBF (even though most of their listeners are 3x my age I enjoy the music).

If only I had high speed internet and only if WQSI streamed online....

The music at WQSI is nothing more than a commercial for all the Auburn sports crap they broadcast. They have streaming capability, but don't use it because the owner doesn't think anybody cares about anything but Auburn sports...and I'm talking every Auburn sport from football to equestrian events. They loop "SPORTS CALL" 24 hours a day on their stream...or they did when I worked there. It's a good classic country format that they have, but it will always come in a distant second to sports.
