What happened to Dallas may impact Houston-Regarding KLOL

It's Big D's sister, Mega 107-5 has just flipped to Regional Mexican-As La Grande 107-5. The Smooth Jazz radio station, available only on HD or online-is still located at 107-5, HD2. The reason? It was DFW's only Spanish pop station just after Univision's KESS-FM has went English, going after KISS-FM. (106.1, KHKS)

On a somber note from KISS, Its star DJ, Kidd Kraddick died in New Orleans yesterday while hosting his own golf tournament, to benefit Kidd's Kidds. Kraddick's voice was heard over on Mix 96.5 in the mornings. My condolences goes out to his daughter today, As Kraddick will be sorely missed.

If I can follow the tortured English of that first sentence, are you saying that CBS may shift KLOL because they made a format change in Dallas?

Probably not.

In Dallas they probably see an opening to take that market's big dog on now that KLNO has lost Piolin, so they're aiming right at them. Since there's no replacement for Piolin yet they may see a vulnerability or at least an even playing field.

In Houston, Piolin was on a rimshot. If they wanted to take on KLTN head on, they'd still be going up against Raul Brindis. KLOL gets good numbers. Why mess with it?

Mega in Houston isn't going anywhere. Station dynamics are different here, and Mega is pulling decent numbers. And let's kill the "bring back Rock 101" nonsense before it even gets started (again.)

Shocking news about Kraddick, and very disturbing to those of us who are a similar age. Cold reminder that none of us is guaranteed any tomorrows.

Well, I'm guessing that The Kraddick family needs some time to be alone in this difficult moment. ClearChannel is allowing The Kraddicks to grieve in peace, And we need to respect their privacy at this very moment. Kraddick was one of many DJs being profiled on The 20th Television-produced "Dish Nation"-in which case many of its DJ's are pretty much based in Atlanta-Like Hot AC Star 94 & Mainstream Urban V103.

First of all R.I.P Mr Kraddick....

Going back to the subject of Mega, when did Mega 101 change their morning show?? Im not sure of the new show but BETO NAJERA and his YA LEVANTATE CON BETO NAJERA SHOW, is no longer heard here. Will this new guy help or hurt Mega 101??

My Spanish skills aren't the best, but I've listened a little to the new morning show on KLOL in the past week, and have heard a lot of "Ranas y Caro" - the morning show on KLOL's format counterpart in the Rio Grande Valley - Digital 101.5.

"Ranas y Caro" is a lot of gossip, sex talk that would probably not fly if the station were US-licensed, along with a heavy dose of news and border crossing times. Either way, the pacing is good, and the program is the station's anchor (it's also syndicated out to Laredo). I did listen to the old show on Mega 101 a few times, and it was something similar. From what I've heard so far of the new show, it's a lot of drawn-out conversations about individual listeners' relationships... which was a bit of a snoozefest. But perhaps someone more fluent could provide a better analysis.

Excuse me - I have to go vomit. OK, I am back. I suppose I was naive in my assumption that Spanish language programming would actually serve the public interest of Spanish speaking listeners who may have limited English skills. Now - I find that they are only using a foreign language to mask the fact they are programming vulgarity. I have refrained from sharing this, but even though I don't speak foreign, I can sure enough understand it enough. I don't know how many times myself, my wife, and even my under-aged daughter were discussed in Spanish while we were in public. A Spanish speaking rude person, pervert, or pedophile is just a rude person, pervert, or pedophile speaking a different language. I didn't want to "blow my cover" but I can assure you there were times when I wanted to serve someone a knuckle sandwich. Just because a woman or child are physically attractive, and you have the ability to hide your comments - it doesn't make those comments appropriate. This was only a small percentage of Spanish language conversations I heard, but I get the distinct impression the language is being used as a smokescreen to make conversations private - assuming the people around you aren't able to understand.

I hope 101.1 goes back to English language, because what is described above - if even halfway accurate - is not serving anybody's public interest, and is vulgar, crude, unrefined, and needs to be stopped!

Considering the morning show he's referencing isn't heard on KLOL, I'm not sure if there is a point.

Sorry if that wasn't clear... "Ranas y Caro" - the show that pushes the limits a little bit - is on in the Valley. And please don't confuse the show with Howard Stern; the hosts just go very in detail in conversations about private lives compared to, say, KRBE or Hot 95.7.

In reference to the other post, given that at least 80-90% of the Rio Grande Valley is Spanish-fluent, the hosts aren't exactly keeping secrets from anybody. If anything, the English stations would be :)

There is. It's KHPT's HD-2. Isn't it one of yours, John? Otherwise, I could tell you a story about a dead horse, but is it really needed?
Getting back to topic, 101 going up against the likes of KLTN & KTJM, 2 well established stations in the format, seems foolish. Mega's only real competition formatwise is KAMA, and with 104.9's signal north of Houston such as it is, Mega needs to remain status quo.

What am I saying? Take my card, I think I just got kicked out of the rock n roll army. =-O

You've got The Pizzoint.

Which I actually said during a break one afternoon on a dare from Skymike 7 or 8 years ago. I think the statute of limitations has run out on that.
