WBOS program director calls it quits

Ahhh, the revolving program director door at WBOS 92.9FM. Today’s news out of Greater Media-owned Triple A station is that program director David Ginsburg is resigning after nearly a year in the position. Ginsburg was with WBOS for seven years. He started as a Promotions Director, became music director in 2004 and was named PD in 2006.(BRW 11/16/06). His last day at the station is next Friday(10/19).

Ginsburg’s departure is voluntary, but he joins a growing list of program directors who unsuccessfully tried to find WBOS’ place in Boston radio landscape. Since 1997, when Greater Media took over the Triple A(short for Adult Album Alternative format) station, it has gone thru seven program directors, some of whom had pretty impressive industry credentials(Jim Herron, George Taylor Morris, Shirley Maldonado, Chris Hermann, Michele Williams, Dave Douglas and David Ginsburg) and there’s still no hope in sight that it will be able to find the right direction and bigger audience.

Since dropping country music in 1989, WBOS has been all over the map musically – it had leaned toward classic rock, it took on a softer sound of pop rock, a mishmash of all 80’s and 90’s pop-rock. It had tried bringing in Boston radio veterans like Ken Shelton, Robin Young, Bill Abbate, Neil Robert and radio icon Charles Laquidara, but no dice.

As of the most recent summer monthly survey, WBOS was ranked 17th among all listeners ages 12 and older. The complete summer ratings survey will be released next Tuesday(10/16).

Greater Media’s VP of Programming Development Buzz Knight and WBOS’ music director/midday personality Dana Marshall will oversee programming until a new PD is named.

In any other market, this baby would have been flipped (most likely to a rhythmic format). Years ago, in fact. Those numbers are dismal. However, this being Boston (and somewhat unique), this small listenership apparently pays the bills

In the times I have tried to listen to WBOS, I've found it to be all over the place musically and formatically. Like a station with an identity crisis. And, frankly, WXRV (another station with a tiny audience) does a better job with AAA than WBOS. If WBOS flipped to something else, it's unlikely that many people would miss it. Most would just flip their Bose Wave Radios to 92.5. Yet the billing continues to be good. So, who knows? ::)

On a different note, is David Ginsburg any relation to Boston radio legend Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsburg?

In 2000, it almost became Jammin' Oldies (or whatever GM's knock-off product was, "Jammin' Gold").

The billing was okay last time I checked... it's much better than the 12+ numbers imply, but there's definitely room for improvement.

I think David Ginsburg might be related to the Woody Tanger family that own/owned many stations in this area and New England.
Anyone know for sure?

Does anyone here remember the "Rock Without The Hard Edge" branding back in the early 90's?

IMO the station needs an imaging overhaul and a new direction. However, as several people have pointed out on this forum, the station will more than likely go on as is due to the fact that the station still somehow draws decent billing... As we all know too well, in this day and age it's all about the bottom line... If BOS was bringing in the $$$ playing polka music 24/7, they would let it go on forever.

A Classic case of someone being in over their head?
(BTW...Does GM ever hire 'real' PD's? Or just puppets?)

Also, as of late, the billing hasn't been that great. Their spot rate is very low these days.....with no premium being charged for drives, etc.

Now, if that's true, things could get interesting! The billing figures have pretty much been the only thing that has kept WBOS in its present, low rated, format. If those figures are slipping, then changes will be made.

There is no reason for two stations to be competing in a niche format that barely has room to do well on one. It's really too bad the owner is Greater Media - Boston really needs a rhythmic station and, to my knowledge, they have almost no experience in this area. If they flip WBOS, it will probably be to some other whitebread format that is already around.
