What happened to Don Brown from 'ABK?

After my haughty response to the post saying how awful I thought his dismissal was, the thing disappeared. There has (thus far) been no mention of Brown's firing in the local print media. If it were true, it would be big news, as he's an icon in the region. My guess is that the poster was misinformed or that it was a hoax.

All that having been said, nothing Blueberry Broadcasting does would surprise me.

Listened to 'ABK this morning and didn't hear Don. Blueberry ops manager Jack O'Brien was doing the shift with Mr. Mike from 'TOS doing the pre-record news like he does on Big 104. Haven't seen anything in the papers. Does anyone know what is happening?

Don Brown has indeed been let go from WABK. The fact that it hasn't been noticed is because nobody cares about radio anymore. At one time hearing Don Brown on the radio meant everything was OK with the world. Don Brown was on the radio when every major event occurred over the last 40 years. He was there when you were in High School. When you drove to your first job. When your babies were born. When those same babies went off to college got married and had babies of thier own. This used to mean something. The fact that this wasn't handled in a way where Don Brown, a Central Maine legend, could say goodbye and thank you is very sad. I though local owners understood this.

WhatWas is correct, sadly.

Don Brown was let go last week, the day after the Spring Arbitron closed. (Confirmed this info early this afternoon from a close source.)

Blueberry has to write the big checks to its lenders every month, so in the end, it's up to them. But at least in the short term, this will probably bite them in the glutes. Listener and advertiser backlash.

There's more to making money in radio than ratings. In my humble opinion, Blueberry just knocked down WABK's power ratio by at least a factor of 0.25. And that's a chunk of change.

Ah, it's good to be retired!

How hard is it to cut the top guy at your top rated station? The next one will be a lot easier. And the next and the next and the next.

I'm amazed they have kept it together this long.

Steve Smith must have spoken to "What Was" before commenting to the press.... ;)

Legendary local broadcaster says WABK going “in a different direction”

And what "direction" would be that exactly? Love that excuse that a company gives when someone is dismissed. I didn't know Don Brown but it sounds to me he deserved better treatment than this.
