What happened to Elyria?

On Sunday morningat 8:00am, I heard a Legal ID on AM 930 that said WEOL, Lorain, Medina. Do they bounce between the cities and not mention all of them all the time?

As far as I know, WEOL's COL has been Elyria since day one. WCLV/104.9, WDLW/1380 and WNZN/89.1 are the only radio stations officially licensed to Lorain.

The "Medina" mention has been optional since 2003 or so; the legal ID is generally "WEOL: Elyria/Lorain." Mentioning Lorain is not necessary per the FCC regs, but is standard for the station given the close proximity between both cities.

Moreover, their imaging hasn't changed in years (their imaging voice has not made any new liners in years and was recently replaced by WJR/760 Detroit - I forget his name) so I presuming it was an automation burp?

I don't listen to WEOL all the time, but it's always been "Elyria/Lorain/Medina" each time I've heard it in recent years.

As Nathan mentioned, the "/Medina" add on is fairly recent, roughly dating back to the time where someone at ELB saw that the signal booms into Medina, and realized it was growing like weeds. :D

Imaging VO on WEOL is Carter Davis. The same as WJR. But WEOL has had Carter for years. He also used to be the VO for sister country WKFM when it first signed on back in '95'96. WKFM has been using Dial Global's feed as well as the VO talent and production provided by the network.

I don't believe Carter is still on retainer for WEOL. So whatever they're running was buyout.. or ... they're just running his VO.

Indeed. But WEOL only attempts to reach Medina via their tape-delayed "Medina County Matchup" HSFB games. Aside from that, they really never have done anything else.

That's the guy!

Indeed, Carter hasn't cut any new liners for WEOL in over three years. Nowadays his VO is spliced in with OM Bruce Van Dyke's voice (who now otherwise serves as the de facto VO for any newer promos, or in the case of Clark Howard, for an updated airtime that Carter never cut) but the TOH ID remains intact.

And with regard to Jeff Thomas' morning show, former host Les Szekely actually did his liners.

WJR replaced Carter with a male/female duo late last year. The female voice I wouldn't know, and the male voice is very reminiscent of David Lee (VO for WW1's football coverage).

But really, aside from what's left of Craig Adams doing local news, or whatever Jeff does on his show, and the other local sports, the station hasn't done a lot to focus on the home field in Lorain County, either.

Laura Ingraham and Clark Howard sound the same in Elyria as they do in Medina. :D

You nailed it. It's a shame to see a decent AM signal basically being laid to waste with no effort whatsoever. I know Bruce and Tim Alcorn are (AFAIK) the only full-time staffers there (Jeff and Craig certainly aren't), but it's painful to listen to Jeff's show. It's literally just a one-man band with the occasional interview thrown in.

In comparison to WOBL and WDLW, who both are able muster a full-service news department and local programming on weekdays and weekends... it's flat-out depressing. It proves that the Hudnutts don't want to invest in the station one iota.

At times I wish WEOL just pulled the plug and simulcast either WNWV/107.3 or WKFM/96.1 full-time. Or flip to "Fox Sports 930," carrying the FSR feed turn-key.

I'm a big fan of Jeff...always have been. But he's (as you suggest) not being given a lot to work with.

WEOL should adopt WAKR's oldies format/news template... ENN... Elyria News Now

@Nathan... VO David Lee used on WMMS along with Malcolm Ryker (since 1998). Former WMMS Creative Director/Nights and then morning host Cousin Deke (at KDGE since 2005) is the promo VO for WGAR. Deke voices a lot of country stations and CC's Premium Choice country feed.

How's about WEOL take a page from their neighbor to the west and become a standards station a la WLEC 1450 in Sandusky?

Standards is dead. 65-70 plus demo. Oldies/classic hits loved by PPM. In fact, more Oldies (technically different than classic hits) stations showing up on FM. Make WEOL what WMJI was late 90s with the presentation and talent, even if voicetracked. Scott Howitt...Billy Bass... Luther Heggs... available I believe. Playlist 1962-1974 (with some title/era exceptions). I would do top of hour news, local and network combo. No bottom of hour news. Plenty of fun features... perhaps even a Biz to Biz Trivia with a now V107-3 talent? Cleveland Top 25 Countdown and more. Can still carry Indians, and other sports programming.

I also forgot that David got a sweet gig voicing promos for Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch."

I like the "Elyria News Now" title, but given that both Elyria and Lorain are the largest cities in the county, another option could be... LCNN... Lorain County News Now.

Side note: When WEOL signed on, they had two studios: the main one in downtown Elyria, and a small remote studio in Lorain. (Do remember that Lorain had no radio station by itself until WWIZ/1380 signed on in 1958.) Up until the early 70s... if not later... and they actually had a Lorain-centric newscast delivered from those Lorain studios twice every day. Even on Sunday.
