What happened to mixshows in Philadelphia?

At the risk of starting a "Philly needs a danz station" thread... can someone explain to me why we have NO decent dance/house mixshow in this city? I was driving through central PA last Friday night and heard good, progressive dance mixshows on WLAN (amish country for crying out loud) and another good mixshow fed in from 933FLZ on WHKF/Harrisburg.

Yet back in Philly? Regular programming on Q102. Saturday nights on Q102 feature the syndicated "Saturday Night Online" (in a Top 10 market, shame on you Q) then regular programming after that. WRDW has mixshows, but they are almost entirely hip-hop. And don't even get me started on the "mixshows" of MY106.1.

So why can't we get any decent mixshows in this city?

"So why can't we get any decent mixshows in this city?"

I'll take a guess at the answer...because radio management and programming folks in Philly don't have a clue how to get it done to both satisfy a niche and make money on it? For a top 10 market, terrestrial radio in Philly LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED. Still making money, but it's a business that has seen its better days.

Check out Z88.9 with mixshows on Friday and Saturday nights

Yeah, good station but does not come in in Center City or most of the Philly market.

This is true and the only programming I listen to on z889 anyway is Tom Gagliardi's Gagliarchives show (which features a good and eclectic mix of progressive/art rock) on Saturdays from 10PM-2AM. Any other time, I tend to listen to WPRB (which doesn't have an HD signal, btw)...

Oh well...

A lot of the Philly Market does include South Jersey which Z889 covers. A great mixshow is the Remix Top 30 with Hollywood Hamilton. It airs on My106 and on Z889. My106 airs it on Friday's overnight at midnight.

I will agree about mixshows. The hip hop stations still do them but Q needs to bring someone in. There is some good talent in Philly that could do it too.

I was driving back from Washington DC - NJ on Saturday night. Heard a hip hop mixshow on Hot 99.5 in DC, an excellent dance mixshow on Mix 106.5 (HD1), and nothing local on Q or Wired. It's not as exciting to hear some chicks from Salt Lake City talk on the air about how excited they are for a party; it's more exciting to hear some chicks from Bensalem talk on the air about how excited they are for a party. The drive between exit 1 on the NJ Turnpike when Mix 106.5 faded away up to exit 6 when 92.3 Now started to come in was long and boring without a dance mixshow, or even any local mixshow.

Yeah, I'm a fan of the Remix Top 30. With MY106.1 basically a Hot AC now, I think it is quite an endangered species (at least on that station). I have posted a couple times to their facebook that I listen to it, I've also facebooked Hollywood Hamilton that I listen on MY106.1... so hopefully they understand that it does have listeners (at least one!).

It is a disgrace, plain and simple, that Q102 doesn't have a mixshow. To be honest I don't even think they are that dance friendly anymore. They only JUST started playing Edward Maya yesterday. No Americano, no David Guetta - Memories, they are actually *late* on dance music. Sad. Q102 used to be one of the most progressive Top 40 stations in the country when it comes to dance music -- and that was at a time when the music was not popular at all. Now it is gaining popularity and Q102 won't give it the time of day.

I think the answer is purely economic. There's alot of M-F 6a-7p mentality out there by upper management at many stations that see nights and weekends as a vast waste land and "non income" producing times to they oten go the cheap VT route.

Of course with some creativity anything can be sold. In this economy, I would think you would not want to leave any potential money on the table.

Q's number have been up in the past few books, so whatever they are doing is working. If they are going to bring in a mixshow, they have to find the right DJ to do it. You just cant grab a guy that spins in the club, they need to understand radio.

Its been a while since Q was aggressive. Im thankful that the PD that made it aggressive works with me as an advisor.

So, I guess the new PD is just not a fan of dance music. That's ashame. I really can't think of any other reason a major market CHR would have not one mixshow. Especially in a market that is known for being dance friendly.

BTW, the ironic thing is that My106.1 now has mixshows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Unfortunately it's just their regular playlist (minus the newly added Nickelback and Daughtry garbage) loosely beatmatched together. Oh, the DJ is "Robbie Rob".. almost sounds like "Richie Rich" doesn't it?
