What happened to Party 105?

nd2023

Yesterday there was tropo so I thought I'd see if I'd get Party 105. I did, and was very surprised to hear mostly hip hop on that station. I can't stand listening to the 20K stream only because the audio quality is bad, so I rely on trips to Long Island and tropo openings to sample the station. Last time I went to Long Island was in January, and then it was like a 50-50 split of hip hop and dance. I noticed about 75% hip hop and 25% dance. Seemed like it went downhill ever since Andre left for Pulse.

I'm not complaining about that because as a dance leaning Rhythmic, it impresses dance music on the kids who listen to it for the hip hop. We actually need MORE CHRs like Party 105 that are not afraid to mix dance with hip hop.

i listen to party 105 regularly and it seems like they air alot of hip hop product on weekend afternoons and during the evenings.
depending on the specific playlist for the week, the amount of hip hop / dance split does seem to vary.
I can see airing certain upbeat, "dance leaning" hip hop tracks, considering these can fall into the "party music" category it promotes itself as, and also because it reports for the rhythmic airplay panel, but some some songs it airs i think are innapropriate for a station like this to be airing.
examples -
DJ Webstar and Jim Jones featuring Juelz Santana - Dancin on me (which was number one on the playlist two weeks ago)
Drake - Best i Ever had (number one on the playlist this week)

songs like these are clearly not the slightest bit dance music sounding, neither does it go along with the "party music' theme on party 105.
i would like to continue to see some hip hop on the playlist, but a considerably less amount.

Webstar and Drake are two of the biggest night club 'party' records of the moment on Long Island;
playing dance for hip hop fans does make an impression, I will say, enough of an impression to get them to switch the station immediately!

Party 105.3 has hip hop to itself in eastern Long Island. NYC stations are unreceivable, Hot 93.7 is weak. Party 101.5 has competition with 1 dance station and 2 hip hop stations. I thought that Vic Latino, a former programmer of BPM, 95.3 Party, and my favorite KTU DJ, would keep Party 105 as the "station that dares to dance".
I miss the Party 105 of 2 summers ago which was almost all dance, sounded like 87.7 does now.

As one listener has stated on Pulse " You guys are killing party 105." He's right I find myself listening less to party 105 and trying to tune into 87.7 more. I wish they had a stronger signal out east.

There is some decent amount of dance on Party 105, but then again, I only listen on the weekends sometimes. I do know their new imaging is a little dry, not much punch into it, which is a WTH since it's the same VO guy you hear on Energy 98, and was heard on Energy SF & Phoenix and KTU.

Yeah that'll come soon, with the recent drop in ratings, doesn't look like 101.5 is making any difference. I blame the turn to an urban direction on the drop. And what's this you say that Party plays a decent amount of dance, where? You sure you don't have amnesia and are listening to 87.7? Probably, cause you always think your listening to NY dolls anyhow. As for my point I could name about 15 artists that Pulse plays that party hasn't even touched, especially marina chello what's done is done which is getting calls for instant requests. I think that this is going to be a huge summer record. Its too bad DRe Dog left he was putting down some cutting edge dance, not just in the mix show. As far as hearing hip-hop I'd rather listen to a clear Hot 97 then a weak 101.5 in nassau.

i have to agree with you on this one, and pulse 87 does seem to have a larger playlist than party 105
(sorry about the formatting, i'm new to the boards)

It's been a lean like this for quite a while now.

There was also a time, just before the Channelcast disaster that Party 105 had a hip-hop/R&B format (around 2005). Fact is, there is no "rhythmic" station out that way. 'BLI does the CHR and has the ratings there for that specific market. People know of Party 105 as dance, which is why the station won't totally "destroy" it. But as one poster said, since there hasn't been a hip-hop station out there (not since The Blaze), Party is filling that void.

It is what it is.

Just relax,, summer is coming to an end, Party always skews more Urban during back to school time, and then gets dancy again around april. It could also be the time of day you listened. If you ever listened to z-1035 Toronto in the morning and before noon you wouldnt think they were dance friendly at all. Also, it depends on if any quality dance has lately been released that fits the format,, they wont just play whatever dance comes across their desk unless they think the audience will love it... Party has always been more of a rhythmic thats dance friendly than an actual dance station anyway, and I was glad to see party get moved to the rhythmic reporter,,, it keeps the hip hop off the dance charts and puts dance on the rhythmic charts,,, even if its only one station.

You can get 87.7 up to Patchogue, and 87.7 completely dwarfs the 101.5 coverage area. The dance fans in 101.5 territory are listening to 87.7, the hip hop fans are listening to 97.1 or 105.1. If they didn't have to do a straight simulcast on 101.5 by FCC law, they would probably make 101.5 more dance leaning than 105.3. No one's going to listen to hip hop when bits of NJ 101.5 are mixing in, but dance fans will put up with static.

I was listening on Sunday night, I usually only can pick up the station some nights in summer, or when I make the long drive to Long Island.

Party 105 is doing fine with billing and the music mix that you currently hear is the one that they are going with for the forseeable future. Remember that they have been made a Rhythmic Reporter which means that they play a big enough percentage of titles that are on the Rhythmic Chart.

This really isn't something that is all that new.

thanks John.. vic is doing whats best... Party would fail as a pure dance station,, but a format like party currently has would work in alot of cities..... chicago,, Indianapolis,,, Detroit,,, minneapolis.. would you rather party dump all dance and go straight ghetto,,, be happy for what we have,, we still have our school stations, pirates, net casters,,, European and middle eastern stations.. We will always have access to dance,,,, dont worry so much about terrestrial stations,, we are never gonna see many com stations going dance anytime soon,, at least not pure dance.. Im happy with one dance song an hour,,, but maybe thats because dance isnt all I listen to, even though it is the music I am much more passinate about...

party 105 hasnt been moved to being a rhythmic reporter, it was added;
meaning its still a reporter for the hot dance airplay panel and the rhythmic panel

Today I was listening to Party 105 on the Jersey shore all day (it was coming in stronger than Pulse 87 or any other NYC station!) and it really didn't sound so urban-leaning as it did the other day. It even played some dance music that Pulse 87 doesn't play yet. And it's not as "ghetto" as a pure urban station like Hot 97 or Power 105, it sounds like a cross between Pulse 87 and the old 99.3 The Buzz.
