WHAT HAPPENED TO PULSE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Stream works, but the weird part is there's a stereo pilot on both 87.7 & 87.9 and both have dead air. Could be a strong pirate, and I did hear sone dance music fighting over on 87.7 unless it's that 87.5 "The Hot FM" pirate.

Stream up. No pirates, just broadcasting dead air at the moment.

I just tuned in to the stream now, Borasio was on air like a normal business day. Could be a possible technical difficulty, nothing was mentioned though of the blackout on 87.7 so this is throwing me off guard a bit.

UPDATE: There is technical difficulty with 87.7FM regarding about a problem with the link from the studio to the transmitter, they announced it on the web feed.

a problem with the link? meaning basically that their time on the airwaves is up and the inevitable is now upon us.

If last night shall be the end of Pulse (on 87.7) at least we had a heads up on things. At first I thought a pirate invaded 87.7 around Central Jersey since you have that Compact FM pirate on 87.9 interfering as well, and the broadcast on radiotime was going strong. Although questions do come to play as to now if Pulse is completely off 87.7, will they still continue as an online station?

If that would be the case I'd wonder why Joel S would want to program 2 internet dance streams that would basically be the same. In addition to Pulse, Joel also programs the "Original Hot97" stream.

Also, the pirates would be wise to vacate the frequency because Pulse or not, there will be a station there one way or another. Why risk the fine?

Well, "Original Hot 97" would be great on HD off the bat, and it should've had it's respect on the 97.1 HD-3 dial at least. Original Hot 97 plays non stop music 24/7 and I don't know how this stream was neglected to be on HD. As for Pulse, they can still have jocks and the mixshow DJ's, and have it's "live and local" feel.

As for the pirate situation, it seems nobody wants to invade Newark. Look how long Streetz 96 is on 96.5, but has either decreased its coverage, or X96.3 had a real good upgrade. Now there is another caribbean pirate on 87.5, and countless others around Newark/East & South Orange area that constantly pop up and never get shut down.

People really should chill out...this is hardly the first time any station has had technical issues, even in NYC. If they were done for, there would be no reason for them to continue their online stream with their on-air staff as usual.

Last night I did hear a trace of music when I turned my volume up all the way, but it was mostly static. This has happened before in the past, but they usually fixed it within hours. I hope they are not done for good now.

there is a Verizon problem in Long Island City with the fiber that carries both their primary and backup audio paths from their studio to the transmitter at the Citicorp building. The problem occurred at about 8:30 last night, and Verizon has been working all day to try and repair the issue and get it back on the air.

Okay,

A LOT of people have been contacting me regarding this. Here is my stance:

1) Someone had typed in a new comment about Verizon and the fiber. Couldn't another company do this if there is "trouble"?

2) The Internet streams are up. The streams might have been paid for in advance so, yes, still conduct things "business as usual" being that there IS a way of the station getting out there.

3) If this is indeed the end, then from a dance fan perspective we have to make a LOT of noise to bring attention that dance music NEEDS to be heard on New York City radio. I don't think we'll have any problems this time around....over 940,000+ strong with more people knowing about the coalition.

NOW, having said that....I know a couple of you out there are probably doing some sort of dance here (and I wouldn't call it clubbing), loving the fact that this happened because the FIRST blame that this will be directed to is current rhythmic dance music as a format failing. And just so I note this for the record, even though certain people are going to "distort" this to however they want, for their own twisted minds, DANCE MUSIC AS A FORMAT DID NOT FAIL PULSE 87! Financial issues killed it and they go as far back as 2004, WAY before a Pulse ever existed. If anything, Pulse served as a "pail" for the sinking ship. The ratings and cumes have constantly climbed up. Okay pundits...a 1.0. Yeah, you call that a success Tony? As I have pointed out MANY MANY times in other threads...if the station had a full signal, full budget and above 92 and GOT a 1.0, then you have a good argument for failure albeit there are other stations in the market that have ratings lower than that and still exist. Yet for a station whose signal was always weak, that had NO promotions (in terms of highway and mass transit ads....basically the promotion had been "word of mouth"), where some car stereos don't go below 87.9, Pulse was IMPRESSIVE and proves that New York City could handle a current based dance station...just like it did with the original 'KTU, Hot 103/97 and to a smaller extent, 'KTU (1996 - 2006).

When Pulse does play its last track, then WE, the coalition, will be back to do what we have to do. At least we are organized and on the "ready"....which is certainly an advantage over the oldies fans when 'CBS went to "Jack" as well as country fans (who did try a valiant effort after 'YNY flipped to 'KTU, but haven't heard from since Y-107).

Pulse has been amazing for the 20+ months we've had them. It brought people BACK to the radio after feeling "abandoned", therefore seeking other sources such as digital media players and satellite. And no, it isn't over yet. Still tune in, still support to the very end.

Perhaps down the road, we can GET another dance station. I'd rather we go for something above 92 in this case, but if another company came in and leased the 87.7 signal from Island, then we'll take it. I think dance fans could wait it out for something like this.

I'm not sure what you are asking. There are two separate (well actually four- two pairs of Stereo audio loops) that span between Brooklyn and the transmitter room in the Citicorp building that are used to deliver the programming to the transmitter. Both those ride on the same fiber for the last mile into the "big blue building in queens" -- which developed a problem. Verizon was notified, has acknowledged the problem, and has been working to try and repair it. As for "other companies" you don't just get these kinds of circuits in place overnight, and there is not ISDN or another delivery means that exists at the transmitter site to get programming over there on a temporary basis.

I have heard that Verizon is notoriously slow when it comes to fiber repairs. I am a bit shocked that the engineer(s) at Pulse couldn't have done something else to keep from going silent. Dead air for almost 24 hours is unacceptable..not even from a listener prospective but from the clients'. If I bought spots on Pulse, I'd be pretty heated, and now there's a full day of 'make goods' that have to be thought of. I'd think that the team over at Pulse could have improvised-couldn't someone have at least set up a cellular connection at Citicorp and used that to broadcast the web stream over the air?

Yeah, I would think they could at least bring a computer to the big blue building and broadcast the 64k stream on the air. A low quality delayed stream would sound better than dead air.

WTH is this bogus crap? How do we know if the plug is already pulled and this whole link lost thing is just a cover up. I hope those haters are happy Pulse is off 87.7 and now we have to be FORCED to listen to the garbage these penguins shove down our ears!

I didn't listen to "Pulse 87" that much. It has some technical problems with the transmitter, but the stream is up, thank goodness for the "Pulse 87" app on my iPod Touch.

I remember as you are saying that 87.7 is also hearing static, just like the way it did since June 12th when WRGB up in Albany went static during the middle of David Letterman's "The Late Show" and then "Poof!" It is now static. WPVI in Philadelphia did the same thing too. It happened when WRGB started to carry the TV audio on 87.9, it didn't last very long, so the FCC decided to pull the plug once again. Both WRGB in Albany and WPVI in Philadelphia used to have TV audio on 87.7, but now they're history. Is "Pulse 87" will be history starting November 1st? Stay tuned and find out!
