What happened to Steve Summers?

Apparently, no one cares ... or knows.

Except Steve, of course :).

Gotta love the love as usual on this board.
I see nothing has changed....lolololol

A friend told me someone was asking so I thought
I'd drop in and give a shout As Batman
said "who cares!" I agree....lololol
As I did before I took the 8 month run at KOKC Radio,
My wife and I continue to run our Radio voice-over
production business out of our studio for Agencies
and Producers throughout the states. Most of the work
we do is out of state on the West/East coasts.
We produce audio for TV/Radio in over 150 markets
nationwide and Canada.

The only stuff I'm currently doing here is
the voice over for "The Daily Oklahoma" for Television,
The Richardson Suzuki (cars talking to each other part)
the upcoming "State Fair Of Oklahoma" campaign, Some
Blue Cross & Blues Sheild stuff and that's about it.

I do occasionally miss being on the air but the work
I do now doesn't allow for me to take an airshift
unless of course it's flexible, it's parttime, the money
is right and the person running the department is qualified.

It's no secret that KOKC (formally KOMA-AM) is too powerful
of a signal for on-the-job training. But I'm not going there.
Renda's sister stations KRXO/KMGL & KOMA continue to be
home of some of the best air-talent in Oklahoma City hands down.
Sorry, I'm a little partial but I've seen and worked with
these guys and they are truely the best at what they do.
Reason? The program directors for those stations allow the
personalities to be THE PERSONALITIES they are. Therefore,
they win. Ratings prove it over and over again.

So who cares? Well you asked and I thought I'd let you know
out of respect of you asking. So bring on the bashers.
We're all open game now baby!

Steve.. We all know the lack of capabilities of The Idiot has done to KOMA/KOKC 1520. I'm supprised you put up with his crap as long as you did. There is no room for improvement as long as he is still employed there.. That's just the plain and simple truth.

Any plans to get back on a music station sometime soon?
______________

In other words, that eliminates this country.

Well, unless your name is Jesus, I don't know how anybody could make a talk station---in what is an already crowded talk radio market like OKC---work. I mean, there are a lot of people on Oklahoma radio who do a good job of sounding like they're talking for Jesus--and you better do what they say to do--or risk burning in the fires of Hell!! (Oh, and don't forget to give money generously, dear brother! Whatever you can give, it is always greatly appreciated! And may the Lord look down upon you and bestow his kind, merciful, and loving grace on both you and yours, brother! Praise the Lord! Amen!)

But, anyway, since Jesus himself doesn't do radio, I don't see how KOKC can survive the way that it is (and the way things are in OKC, talk radio-wise) right now.

LOL! That thing is CERTAINLY living on a prayer. I think we need to call the priest for the final blessing fast!

What's the next format-of-the-day for 1520? GodChannel 1520? Quackery KOKC? Financial Rip-off Radio 1520? Little Green Men in Saucers KOKC? I say start taking apps for more freaks that want a microphone and something to scream on. With 50,000 watts people will pay a LOT of money to make fools of themselves, and quite possibly the listenership. One thing about it, it would be more entertaining than what is @ 1520 right now just from the humor of it all. Hell I'd listen to just hear what kind of crap they'd run next! Hell, put a twin-spin of Dr. Gene Scott and Brother Stair back to back in the mix and you'd have a really entertaining station! LOL!
______________

What's his name? I don't live in OKC.

Maybe I know him.

You seem to be saying that to know him is to hate him :)

Or something like that.

I don't know Steve either ... just playing around.

Not trying to give him a hard time.

Must be hard working at a station where you are practically talking to yourself.

I've been at a few of those. No fun.

I'm just thinking out loud here.....KOKC's schedule is made up almost entirely of syndicated shows.......so what is there for a KOKC PD to do to earn his or her paycheck? I mean, KOKC could be run on automatic pilot and still pull in the kind numbers that it does.----And not just any automatic pilot, mind you, but an automatic pilot like the one in the movie "Airplane"! ---That inflatable guy could hold down the fort at KOKC, I'm sure!

For sure, for dang sure ... good buddy.

Check Google ... that inflatable guy .... and see if you can contact him.

Are you the CEO of Renda?

This is absolutely brilliant.

Mind blowing.

I've always been the type of person to give anyone a chance.
Some say that giving it eight months was probably too long, but
I can't say I didn't try to instill change in the station and stability
more than anything else. I didn't pull any punches I just stated
fact. Especially since KTOK is the heritage news/talk station
and you have an uphill battle here. but there were some things that
clearly needed to happen and timing was everything. But hey, as they
say, "I'm not the program director, I'm just the morning guy".
While I do still respect Garth Maier as a person and of his talent
on-air, quite honestly I simply don't feel that putting him in the
position he is in now was the right move for Renda.

If your clearly going to compete against a heritage talk station, you've
got to have a clear vision and plan to counter format KTOK.
This includes hanging on to your fulltime Newstaff that was dedicated. Promotions & Marketing the beast are the most essential aspects of any
Newstalk station. Not a year later. Plus, you've got to be there for
every event that is news worthy no matter what. If you don't make the
product sound better, give better news coverage and give people something
their not getting anywhere else, you might as well flip the format to
big band and let it run on automation.
In the words of a good friend of mine who was a terrific PD he said
"If you don't make a plan, you plan to fail."

I still honestly believe (and you can call me crazy) but if KOKC is
programmed, Branded and Marketed correctly, they still might stand
a chance at competing in this market. But that will only come from a seasoned
PD who has the track record of success and the experience to make it
happen.

As far as returning to the airwaves as a jock, as I said
(considering the landscape of radio here in 2005)the deal would have
to be an awfully good one that includes a contract if it was fulltime.
The fulltime gig would have to work with my production schedule at the
studio here. The one station I do miss working at is KOMA-FM parttime.
It's a great station and Kent Jones is simply one of the
best PD's in the business. KOMA-FM is heritage oldies, it's marketed
correctly and it stays in the top 5 always. Not only that but it's fun
to spin the tunes and be the jock you want to be.

Indeed one of the best jocks in the business is Ronnie Kaye.
Having listened to many other oldies stations throughout the country, he is simply the best. I've asked him before I said "Ronnie, why do you stay here man when you could work in LA at the K-Earth" He said, "this is my home and I love it here". I think Oklahoma City should be thankful to have this guy still
on the air after the many years he's spent being Mr. Rock N Roll. The stories
this guy can tell you would amaze you. Ronnie's sound is still refreshing
to me. Especially in an industry lost in homoginization.

Yes..... I think your right on the money there. I'm just picturing what you have referred to in "Airplane" and quite frankly there are some amazing parallels there. The only thing different in the movie the inflatable guy actually KNEW how to fly the plane. Hahahahaha!

Ronnie Kaye is the appitamy of the last real D.J. He's the last of the best that has just gotten better over time. His show is entertaining radio from someone who hasn't forgot he's in the entertainment business. If radio was anywhere close to his caliper across the board, we would have NOTHING to fear from newer media technologies. As it is though, I'd say terrestrial radio has LOTS to loose some sleep over in the coming years. Doing what they've done at 1520 by putting a cheap, crappy excuse for a format out there and expecting the public to accept it is what is wrong with radio today. Don't do it right, just do it cheap and half-assed. Pay very little for some local guy and put syndicated ranters on all day and expect success. Isn't that like a restaurant serving cold-cuts and expecting people to line up around the block in suites at 40 dollars a plate to eat there? I'm glad to see that someone in this market (irronically in the same building as that 1520 thing) still wants to do radio right. How refreshing!
______________

Kudos for being gracious about it...unlike some people who've frequented this board before. You are the epitome of someone of high caliber! :)

A Chance to bash SS? OK! Steve, you're a Great American! Good to see your post, sir.

Steve, I know you give 100% in everything you do. No one can say you didn't do your best (under the circumstances). Only thing I can say is, what took you so long to finally decide to get the hell out of there?
