What happened to the 50's?

I like hearing the old 50's Rock in Roll, I listen to that channel on my XM Direct TV, it sounds good, wish KONO would play a little more 50's, I know they are trying to keep in with the younger also, but still would be good to hear some 50's again on the radio.

yeah I miss the 50s music on KONO. We used to listen to KONO all the time back in the 90s since our POS dodge only had AM radio in it so I got to hear all this great 50s music the same way that stuff first came out...timeless, and I was only 12 years old. 50s on 5 is a great channel on XM. There's even alot of good early 60s music KONO doesn't play anymore.

I BEEN READING ABOUT AND NOTICING ALOT OF OLDIES, CLASSIC ROCK AND CLASSIC COUNTRY STATIONS DISAPPEARING FOR THE YOUNGER TYPE OF MUSIC. PERSONALLY I ALREADY GIVING UP ON RADIO AND LISTEN TO SELECTED TYPES OF ENTERTAINMENT. ALSO I NOTICED THE LLANO OLDIES STAIONS IS NO LONGER ON 102.7 (AUSTIN).

What is the 102.7 broadcasting now?

So now thats on 98.5 & 102.7?

THe formerly legendary KONO is such a disappointment. Very tight playlist.
It's like they play HANG ON SLOOP every single day, maybe 2x a day.
I heard it two days in a row. Granted, it was the rare VINYL LP long version of the song.

Look at their playlist on YES.COM. KONO sounds so like everyone else. Like a McDonald's or Burger King. Drive to Dallas, KLUV, or Oklahoma City, KOMA-FM. Same songs from the late 60s and early 70s.

The hosts are almost as uninspired as the music.

There are MANY songs from 1960 forward, especially 1964-1966 that KONO won't touch. Only the biggies, period, from that area.

The station likely plays only 10 songs a piece from those three years.

Yet we have to put up with a SPINNERS song every hour.

Sad when you consider the great variety of music heard from that era.

I like the 70s tracks that KONO plays, but the oldies format has always had too much Motown music for my taste, even in other markets. I always hear the Supremes immediately after songs that I like when my car radio lands on KONO. :D

To go back to the original thread topic, the reason you don't hear more 50s music on broadcast stations is that the people who came of age in the 50s are now mostly retired. They're not part of an audience that advertisers crave, so that music is written off as a significant component of a radio format. They're stuck with the "Music of Your Life" on KAHL.

As much as I enjoy stuff from the temptations and other Motown artists, I am sick and tired of hearing the same played out Motown songs. There are a TON of songs from motown that are just as good, if not, better, than some of the typical Motown KONO plays, which keeps me switching back to my XM radio.

Back in June when I was in Prague, Czech Republic, I heard an amazing oldies station that played a lot of American 50s rock and roll music. It's not that that country is "behind the times," they have several stations that played current American and UK top 40, and the same stuff that was plyaing in the US at the time. But that oldies station...wow! I heard a lot of great 50s rock and roll that I used to hear on KONO back in the 90s. Of course, there was Czech oldies mixed in, but seemed to be very Beatles influenced type of music. But the coolest thing I heard was Lou Rawl's "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" (if that's the exact title) sung in Czech. So how come a country on the other side of the world appreciates 50s American music more than Americans themselves? It's puzzling. That's like if Austrians suddenly didn't listen to Mozart anymore...and it's not like the US has a greater appreciation for that composer than Austria. You get what I'm saying?

Same old 10 VP/Programmers and consultants with the same old tired 250 list. What i find curious is this...

This station will go un-named. Under one pd certain songs were hot testing songs. When the new pd comes in he say's that those certain songs aren't testing well. Hummmm?

i believe to best programmers today are on internet radio and satellite radio. i think its time to reduce the numbers of stations a broadcaster can own locally and nationally. (maybe 25 or 50 stations nationwide and 2 locally.)

YESTERDAY I LISTEN TO 102.7 AGAIN, THEY WENT BACK TO PLAYING OLDIES AGAIN, I DON'T KNOW WHATS GOING ON. THEY WENT REBROADCASTING THE SIGNAL FROM THE THORNDALE STATION AND WENT BACK TO OLDIES, WHICH IS BETTER.

I was just in Austin the other day and 102.7 was still simalcasting the oldies station.

I HAVE NOTICED THEY WHERE PLAYING OLDIES AGAIN, FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME THEY WERE SIMULCASTING THE RELIGIOUS STATION FROM THORNDALE AND NOW OLDIES AGAIN WHICH IS BETTER.

I think this is a big part of the reason radio is so sterile today.

Add the fact that many of the announcers are paid squat.

When one jock leaves, he takes his "old" job with him as he is now voice tracking the shift from some other station, so newer talent, if stations were to actually pay for it, are barred from the air.

Then there's very little news, usually only one station in any given market doing any real news.

But that's another topic.

Then there are the consultants who think they know everything.
