What happened to these songs?

I have listened to a good many AC's and have probably heard "A New Day Has Come" once or twice. It was a smash hit, but nobody seems to be playing it. IMO, it's one of her best. I can stand MHWGO, but "It's All Coming Back to Me Now"...please. I also like I'm Your Angel w/ R. Kelly and The Power Of Love. The AC I listen to, surprisingly, plays all of the songs mentioned but no 'New Day.'
I actually like that one, but I will admit that it was a bit overproduced. But then again, that is typical of all Jim Steinman songs. I knew that "All Coming Back to Me Now" was a Jim Steinman song from the very first time I heard it. Everything he produces is very over-the-top. He is, of course, best known for producing Meat Loaf (who is, evidently, his favorite client), but he has indeed worked with other artists.
Yeah, that's what I don't like about that one. The beginning, especially, is a little over the top. Too dramatic. I was listening to some of her songs the other day, and think 'New Day' (the remix) is probably her best. It's not sappy, extremely slow, not dramatic, it has a nice tempo and is a 'feel good' song.

On the subject of Celine....I did not like "Taking Chances." You didn't hear it long. The song was so-so, but I just don't know about Celine doing it. The song didn't really click with her, IMO.

THere's plenty of songs from the 70s, 80s, and 00s for the format to play. The 90s are much more difficult to figure out. It wasn't a great decade for A/C music. You no longer had the "core artists"-----Billy Joel, Elton John, Gloria Estefan. and Phil Collins putting out hits on a regular basis. Many more one hit wonders. Kind of like sports. Leagues thrive when they have stars people can relate to.

Agreed. The songs on the AC I listen to from the 90s are nearly every Shania song from "Come on Over", tons of Celine, a few Phil Collins ones (True Colors and another one), Rod Stewart (Have I Told You Lately/Downtown Train), and a couple of Bonnie Raitt songs from the early 90s. The rest are just randoms, like Give Me One Reason, I Need To Know, Barely Breathing, Truly Madly Deeply, All I Wanna Do...honestly, I don't know of any more. Maybe a couple Faith Hill ones. Very bad decade for AC, would just stick with those. At least after the early-mid 2000s some decent material started to surface again for the format.

The burning of big songs is nothing new to recent decades. Just look at Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life." A massive hit from the 70's, but it was burnt to a crisp. You'll never hear it anywhere anymore because it's lined up in the stiff pile.

I heard it Saturday morning.

You're forgetting adult standards radio.

How many of these songs can't be heard on AC? I've heard them all this week.

"Save the Best for Last" Vanessa L. Williams
"Beauty and the Beast" Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson
"Bluer Than Blue" Michael Johnson
"If You Leave Me Now" Chicago
"We're All Alone" Rita Coolidge
"Every Woman in the World" Air Supply

I know "Margaritaville" still shows up on a Clear Channel AC in this area.

I just thought of another song that vanished - Michael Buble's "Everything." It was #1 for a few weeks several years ago even. Does any AC station play it anymore? His songs are usually good, but don't stick around for a long time (with the exception of "Home" perhaps).

Again, adult standards still does it, so it's not really gone.

But it's gone for AC listeners, many who never listen to standards,

Right. I just want to make it clear the songs aren't really gone.

I was going through the #1 songs on the AC chart and was surprised at how many are hard to find on AC these days....here are some notable ones from the past 15 years:

Madonna - Take a Bow (1995?)
Mariah f/ Boyz II Men - One Sweet Day (spent 3 months at #1 in 1996)
Eric Clapton - Change The World (3 months at #1 in 1996)
Toni Braxton - Unbreak My Heart (3 months at #1 in 1997)
Bob Carlisle - Butterfly Kisses (#1 for a month or so in 1997)
Backstreet Boys - I'll Never Break Your Heart (2 months at #1 in 1997)
Marc Anthony - You Sang To Me (2000)
BBMak - Back Here (2000)
'NSync - This I Promise You (3 months in 2001)
Faith Hill - There You'll Be (2001)
Celine Dion - A New Day Has Come (2002 - spent 5 months at #1!)
If it's any consolation, the ubiquitous syndicated "Delilah" still plays a lot of these '90s/early '00s pop ballads that have otherwise been forgotten by AC radio.

The Backstreet Boys still get frequent airplay on the AC stations around here, but none of the other boybands. Maybe it varies by market.

It took a good 15+ years for the Disco comeback to reach full swing, so it may take a few more years for a '90s Pop music comeback to materialize. Maybe American Idol-mania needs to fully burn itself out first. The '90s bring back a lot of good memories of better times, so the nostalgia is already strong for many, regardless if the music is being heard on the radio again or not.

Yep, the sap-filled songs still do run on Delilah. Ugh.

I don't know if 90s pop will ever be as popular on AC (and radio in general) as disco has been. I grew up with 90s music (not a big fan of it now). Songs like "We Are Family", "Stayin' Alive", etc just have a special charm that makes them enjoyable almost 35 years later. 90s doesn't have that, at least for me. It will surprise me if in 2030, Backstreet, NSync, TLC, whatever are going as strong as songs like the above are in 2010.

If 90s pop music does become more prominent on AC stations, it will be interesting to see what they would draw from. As mentioned, music was so fragmented by then it's hard to find something that one extreme or the other. Will be interesting to see if the decade gets past Shania, Faith, Hootie/Blowfish, Sheryl Crow, etc.

Disco was rested for a long time. It was taboo to play in the 80s and wasn't common to hear in the 90s until Jammin' Oldies staton started popping up later that decade. All those years with limited airplay made disco sound fresh again. It still does for the most part even if AC has played it for awhile now.

I subscribe to a AC music survey every so often, and found this interesting in the results of one of their recent ones:

This week’s survey includes some of the current hits, a few new songs that haven’t been on a survey before, and some songs from the 90s. We’re trying to find more 90s songs that people actually like. So many of them have done poorly on our surveys. If you have some favorites from the 90s that you think we could play, we’re open to suggestions. Please leave a comment.

Surprise, surprise. There is not much top-40/pop material to fall back on like the 70s and 80s so it's going to be an uphill battle to find more than the around 50 songs that (I find) are safe for the format from that era. Again, I'm from the 90s music era...and hate it now. Loved it then, hate it now.

Another AC song I liked a lot that has vanished: "Streetcorner Symphony" by Rob Thomas. I don't recall it being a huge hit, but AC did play it pretty heavily.

That was a good one. They used to play that on commercials for ABC's Thursday night lineup.

Another one that I like that is nowhere to be heard - Annie Lennox's "Walking On Broken Glass" from the early 90s. It seems like it would be a good AC song and I think it did well. I heard that song somewhere recently for the first time in ages.

Tal Bachman's "She's So High" - I don't know if it was an AC song when it came out, but it seems like it would be now. From the late 90s.

The Rembrandts "I'll Be There For You" - theme from "Friends."

Tina Turner's "I Don't Wanna Fight" from 1993.

Contrary to popular opinion, there are some decent 90s songs, it's just that AC stations will not play them and exhaust the same ones more than any other era. I can't wait to see what songs from the 2000s go the way of 90s AC hits (I'll go ahead and bet "Come On Get Higher", "Her Diamonds", "No Surprise", and "Please Don't Leave Me" from last year).

Yes, I believe stations understand the need for more 90s material. Interesting note, there was just a new stucy released concerning A/C and women listeners. It encompassed both Hot and Mainstream A/C listeners. Here are some facts from the music portion of the study:

Listeners who are "Mainstream A/C" listeners rated the following 4 music styles as their favorite:

1. 80s (like Jack & Diane, Summer of 69, and Faithfully)
2. 70s ( like Still The One, Lyin Eyes, and Maggie Mae)
3. A/C-CHR Soft Pop (like I'm Yours, Hey Soul Sister, and Bubbly)
4. Hot A/C Rock (like Use Somebody, What About Now, and Far Away)

Interestingly, a 90s decade set was not part of the research. I'm going to guess because of the lack of positive testing songs from the decade. The Top 4 Hot A/C preferences:

1. A/C-CHR Soft Pop
2. Hot A/C Rock
3. CHR POP (ala You Belong To Me, Telephone by Gaga, and Hot N Cold)
4. 80s

There was a clear break at Age 40 from a preference for the newer artists to the older artists. Over 40, it was about Elton, Billy, Journey, etc

The heaviest users of Mainstream A/C stations were 45-54.

That's the rub----It's tough to survive as a format when advertisers clamor for a younger audience when you heaviest listeners are over 45.

Stations and programmers are trying to pull in younger demos....more 30-39 year olds. If you abandon 70s to do this, you are more apt to upset your really heavy listeners.

Interesting times

By the way, anyone interested in seeing the whole study can do so at www.burnsradio.com. You'll have to create an account to see the data.

I just thought of some more:

"Time, Love and Tenderness", "Missing You Now", "Can I Touch You...There", "Completely", and "The Best of Love" by Michael Bolton
"Vision of Love", "Love Takes Time", "I Don't Wanna Cry", "Can't Let Go", "Anytime You Need a Friend, and "I Still Believe" by Mariah Carey
"Restless Heart" by Peter Cetera
"You'll Be In My Heart" by Phil Collins
"My Favorite Mistake" by Sheryl Crow
"Love Will Lead You Back" by Taylor Dayne
"Reach", "I'm Not Giving You Up", "Heaven's What I Feel", and "Music of My Heart" by Gloria Estefan
"I Know" by Dionne Farris
"Until the End of Time" by Foreigner
"Forever In Love" and "Sentimental" by Kenny G
"I Will Remember You" by Amy Grant
"Come Back To Me" by Janet Jackson
"Because I Love You (The Postman Song)" by Stevie B

I agree that some of those are good songs, but a lot of them have not aged well and probably do not test well. I still hear "You'll Be In My Heart" and "Save The Best For Last" quite regularly.
The problem with 90s is that it is so fragmented. There were the slow ballads that AC played at the time, hip hop, alternative, boy bands, grunge, etc but not a lot inbetween. Not much of it fits with what AC is trying to be in 2010. There were some decent acts that have worked for the format, such as Sheryl Crow, Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, Faith Hill, Shania Twain. Seems like there are about 50 songs from the 90s that AC's will play - no wiggle room like the other eras. You can find different AC's playing different 70s, 80s, 00s songs, but their 90s songs are usually the same.
