What Happened To This Place??

I remember when this stupid board used to be a somewhat reliable source for inside info and a place to leak information. Now its filled with ramblings about brokered radio stations and angry posts from guys who haven't been in the business since carts were new.

What happened?

I totally agree Cow... it's flat out gone boring. I can't believe there hasn't been more discussion about the WSJT/WLLD swap. Nicely done by the way as the launch on 94.1 was well produced. Was no one paying attention at 5? I know Orlando reads the board as well and I personally wish you the best of luck on the new frequency. You guys both are good dudes and continued success to each of ya. Now where's all the gossip... come on people... give it up. Who's got the next big move?

1) Spirit FM switches frequencies with WTAN.

2) WJBQ increases power to 200,000 watts non-directional . WCTQ moves to 92.1 and CC gives up on AC in Sarasota. Marvin Boone is heard as far away as Memphis.

3) 93.3 puts Elvis Duran into mornings and Todd Schnitt moves to afternoons as the "Classical Gas" on WUSF.

4) 106.3 goes dark in the Ft. Myers area and Marvin is number one 12+ mornings in that area

5) Cox rehires Marty Ryan and gives her PM drive on the DOVE and Leslee Lacey gets 7-12 on the DOVE with a combo sports talk and music show for women.

6) MANCOW GETS SICK OF THE ICE AND COLD AND MOVES TO TAMPA. GETS HIRED BY CC AND GETS 3-7 ON 98 ROCK.This creates Mancow v. Cowhead

MAY THE BETTER COW WIN

What happened to this place?

Think about it...

The "best" show on AM in morning drive is hosted by a group of hacking, senile, Alzheimer patients.

The "best" show on FM in morning drive is hosted by an illiterate man named for a contraceptive device.

The "best" show on AM in afternoon drive is hosted by the guy who talks about Britney Spears on his other show and gets his ass kicked in the ratings by the aforementioned contraceptive device.

The "best" show on FM in afternoon drive is hosted by you...

And if you're not elderly, working on a construction site, or 13 years old, there isn't a decent music station to listen to...

Any questions?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I'd say that's a bit harsh... AM Tampa Bay is aimed at adults, and they generally steer clear of the potty humor... after all it is intended for ADULTS.

Scnitt is the only local game on AM PM in town, so it is not a real competition. Once Medved comes on, he can put on an interesting program.

The fact that there is not a 'decent music station to listen to' is a bit subjective, but I would suggest that this is a problem for the music radio aspect of the business in general. For one, all the stations are shooting for the basic same demographic, leaving many varieties of music underserved (or unserved). Could a station make more money being THE Dixieland Jazz station, as opposed to being the third place adult contemporary station.

Two, because somebody decided a long time ago that people don't like to hear DJ patter, many stations have got rid of them, making the resulting jukebox a bit boring. If a station going after the same demographic wanted to break out of the pack, I would be interested in seeing what a modern day Cousin Brucie or Dan Ingram could do in six month's time, playing the same music as the competition but adding the element of WIT in between the hits.

Decent station? Do you mean decent rock station? Decent oldies station Decent talk station? Decent country station? Or are you are talking about ALL formats? Everyone is entitled to an opinion. But believe me-- there are a few (yes FEW) folks putting out good radio in Tampa Bay.

Why I remember the good old days in radio here in this town. WAZE on 860..and WINQ on 1010..and Gordon Solie on 1550 WYOU..(there was a great little diner accross the stree from that station.. a lunch counter with cheeseburgers..I think it was called the Snappy Deal)

Oh and Marshal Rowland on WQYK-AM 1110 and his editorials..and Jim Stanley on WDCL 1470 with the Stanley Steamer Show..fond memories all.

I loved cart machines, and Audimaxes, and cheap springy reverb units so when you said "Cowhead" it sounded like this:

(((((COWHEAD!!!))))))

And Brock Whaley and Tedd Webb on WFSO 570...oh those were the days alright..nothing is as it was, and everything is changing again. Too hard to keep on top of..I owned a Plymouth, and they stopped making those..look a bunny!

We had a Brock Whaley at 98Rock in Honolulu in the early 70s, called himself B-Rock. Probably the same guy. And I took a summer job in 1968 at WSAR in Fall River, MA. They made me use Ted Webb since they had a jingle package with the name already. Didnt tell me that until I showed up for work the first day! (they also told me they competed in the Providence, RI market against WPRO- they lied! Sorta like WJQB out on the fringe competing against Q-105)
And they call me Nostalgic ;D

Steve Harvey vs. Orlando on a stronger signal is a topic worth discussing. Harvey has been doing great ratings on The Beat, but Orlando is local and has a good show and has been competitive despite his presence on 98.7's weaker signal. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery on how that showdown will play out with Orlando now broadcasting from a stronger signal at 94.1?

Nostalgia: Yes, the same Brock Whaley. He is actually back in Hawai'i again, and a good friend of mine going back to the late 1970's when I came to know him from WORJ-FM in Orlando.

And yet even both of his shows are now syndicated, the morning show regionally by CC... So there is a little mistrust in that statement...

Nostalgia: I have a 1971 aircheck of Brock Whaley on WUSF's Underground Railroad, and a 1967 WLCY Christmas aircheck of Jim Stanley. Great guys from the golden age of localized radio.
