What happens when Jeff Phelps goes back to FSO?

...is there any chance that Les Levine would become more of a fixture on the Talking Heads?

Dennis Maniloff would be a great fill in guy.

I respect Jeff Phelps, but the Talking Heads has to be the driest, most mundane and mediocre sports talk show in Cleveland.

Jeff is kinda hokey. Damn good reporter and all around professional, but hardly an entertainer.

It seems like 92.3 doesn't get it going until Bull and the Fox and Carmen in the afternoons/nights.
 
Jeff Phelps will do the show from whatever city the Cavs are playing at when they're on the road via ISDN.

This is evidenced by the fact that he did the show from Detroit on Friday (probably at CBS sister station WXYT) as the Cavs were there to play their exhibition game vs the Pistons.

"Fan" morning co-host Kevin Kiley often does this as well, as he is the sideline reporter for Sunday Night Football on Westwood One, and will do Monday's show from whatever city he was in for the previous night's game.

I'll go back to my thoughts in previous threads...

Baskin and Phelps more than likely purposely made the decision to go this route to be the "anti-Really Big Show".

They wanted to provide an alternative to the "drama" and "conflict" on RBS (mostly Hammer driven, and some of it is purely for "show biz"), so what you have is basically 2 guys sitting down, drinking coffee, and shooting the breeze about sports.

Now Andy Baskin has shown a little more fire as of late, and a lot of it is Browns related (Who can blame him?)

Baskin and Phelps aka "Talking Heads" isn't a bad show (trust me...there have been plenty worse in these parts), but if you like a little more...I don't know...wearing your emotions on your sleeve (be it real or kayfabe) than it's not for you.
 
It's not really the 'wear your heart on sleeve' thing, just the overall quality of conversation between hosts.

I listen to them regularly, and at least three or four times a show, Jeff Phelps brings the conversation to a screeching halt with some old-timey reference or something.
 
Sounds like Jeff will occasionally have a sub (like on game days, perhaps), but occasionally do ISDN from the Cavs' opponent's city (like he did Monday).

too bad......that show is so damn slow and boring. I like having a second option of sportstalk, but it is just so boring. No wonder I am listening to more of Dan Patrick or Cowherd in the office than that show.
 
Actually the show is somewhat listenable this week with Phelps out. Baskin is still a bore but Anthony Lima at least brings some energy to the show. That is what the show needs. Dennis Manoloff, Les Levine, Anthony Lima someone to bring some passion to the show. Jeff Phelps does not bring that passion. He brings the attitude "Winning isn't everything" and oh well the Browns lost what did you expect? At times it seems like he is bothered to be talking sports. 92.3 definitely needs a co-host on the 10am-2pm slot
 
Lima would be a good host. I think he did his grad work up at Syracuse, so that means something. He is very funny on twitter.

Phelphs may be a nice guy, but the show is stale and boring with him.
 
Mark Schwab was on today with Anthony Lima. Completely different energy level with the show again. That is the big difference between radio pros (Schwab and Lima) vs TV guys put on radio (Baskin and Phelps). I would not mind the pairing of Schwab and Lima from 10am-2pm. Just because you work on TV doing sports does not mean it translates to radio. I predict in 2012 we will see a different talk show from 10am-2pm on 92.3. That is their weakest slot and it needs to be improved.

The show did sound pretty good yesterday.
 
I'm definitely a fan of "The Fan", but Jeff Phelps has got to go. His "whatever...what did you expect anyway attitude is exactly what it is - the sound of a teleprompter reader who's job it is to stay as close to impartial as you can when the red ON AIR light is on. He's 1/2 a step further than "our lovable Browns took it on the chin again" radio. I don't love Baskin on the show either, but he at least brings some attitude and anger to the show, and specifically to Phelps' lame "we should expect to win anyway" attitude.

You REALLY hear and realize how bad they are when Bull and Fox come on and immediately start doing what sports talkers are supposed to do - have bold opinions about every sport on the docket and then go at it with fans that agree or disagree.

Jeff is great at recapping any game. He's good at recalling the game in 15-30 seconds. He's not the guy you want at your Super Bowl party. Unfortunately for 92.3, the Super Bowl party guy is the guy they need.
 
At this point I think Daryl Ruiter is getting as bad as Jeff Phelps. Daryl really is becoming a shill of the highest order for the Cleveland Browns. ???

Nothing could ever top Triv's blatant fawning of Carmen Policy when the team came back. It was more than a "bromance" - the FCC should have issued indecency charges against WTAM. :p

Ehhhhhhhhh...I don't completely agree.

I've heard Darryl be pretty tough on the front office and coach Shurmur at times. I agree he can paint a rosy picture w/ the best of them, but I wouldn't go so far as to call him a shill....yet.

For the record, I love Baskin, but I'm afraid I'm not a huge fan of Jeff Phelps on the radio. He (Phelps) is a great pre and post game host on FSN, but he's just a little too 'Aww shucks' for my liking.

I've always thought Baskin and Schwab would be a great team, or Baskin and Dennis M from the PD. Not sure if ch19 and ch5 would let Andy and Mark team-up though...

Anywhoo, still like 92.3 a lot better than 850...although I've been listening to Bruce Hooley during the days that Bull and Fox are off, and he's not bad. Good hire for them. The Hooley/Fedor/Brinda show was surprisingly decent. It's not Bull and Fox, but it's a step in the right direction anyway.

Baskin and "D-Man" did very well early on when Phelps was still getting his contract in order...it's something to put away for safe keeping, as it is a very plausible possibilty for down the road.

The trick to "The Hooligans" is that Hooley put his foot down early on establishing that that is HIS show, and that he calls the shots. Brinda has (surprisingly) adapted well to being 2nd banana, and Fedor has 2 grown-ups there to keep him in line.

Fedor got to run amok on RBS when paired with kindred spirit Hammer (The infamous "Bratty Bunch"), but since they've been seperated, both Chris and Aaron have been behaving themselves somewhat more than before.
 
Fedor and Goldhammer would be board ops at any other sports station. They should be thankful Karmazin owns that station because nobody else would ever hire them for anything more.
 
On another note I heard that Les Levine would be on today so I thought I would listen. Unfortunately Phelps was with him. Not even a few minutes into the show Phelps went into his usual routine with the Browns "What did you expect them to win?" "Winning is not all that important" blah blah blah. Obviously winning must not be that important to 92.3 during the midday slot because they continue to employ him. Seriously Jeff try to "act" like you even care about what you are talking about.

Every time I tune in, I hear Fedor doing is usual yelling and whining about anyone who doesn't agree with him. His act hasn't improved any.
