What has happened to AM 850?

I noticed Friday afternoon April 12 that the country oldies on WKVL AM 850 were gone and there was a talk show of some kind going on. Checking in again this morning it seems as though 850 is simulcasting the signal of WNOX 100.3 FM. What has happened to our great country music station? Why does someone need to simulcast on AM when their FM signal is one of the most powerful around this area? WKVL's format of country oldies and local programming made it a winner in my book; in fact, I thought it was better than anything on satellite radio.

Well, there's a lot of programming on WNOX that's going to need a new home very soon, might be that they've brokered a deal with 850.

When I was in Tennessee last July WKVL was playing some great classic country. At that time it was being simulcast over 1140 in Loudon.

Good things never last on radio these days, but the dreck seems to pay on forever.

Maybe Pirkle's is gonna buy or lease 850 and keep doing the talk format there? Journal might even let him keep the WNOX calls. They really don't mean that much to either of the planned music formats.

Driving to the airport Sunday (4/21) afternoon I heard the legal ID at the top of the hour (4 pm) clearly mention both AM 850 WKVL and 100.3 WNOX while listening to 100.3. I then flipped over to AM 850 and sure enough they were simulcasting. Ok, is it then going to be Ed and Bob mornings on AM 850, "NOX Country" on 100.3 and the wildcard then being what is going to be on 93.1???

I don't think they'll use the 'NOX calls on 100.3. I'm betting it'll be "Q100". At least that's what the rumour and domain registrations are pointing to. Also, the rumors have been that 93.1 is going classic hits. Journal also registered a domain for "Classic Hits 93.1".

As far as Ed & Bob and the talk format, who knows. Maybe Pirkle is buying 850 or maybe another smaller local FM. Or maybe it'll just go away. Certainly wouldnt be a great loss as 100.3 is one of the worst talk stations I've ever heard.

Agreed. If 100.3's talk goes bye-bye, it's no great loss. Seems we've been stuck as-is for much too long. Move the dang formats already. Q-Country on 100.3 - yes! Classic hits on 93.1 - yes!

Again this past weekend on 850 it was a simulcast with 100.3, but the country oldies were back on 850 Monday morning. Listening to 850 yesterday (and right now) it's business as usual with the country. This is a great format, and I sure hate to lose it.

Is WLOD 1140 Loudon still simulcasting WKVL 850?

It appears 850 simulcasts 100.3 only on weekends. I was listening to AM 850 Friday afternoon with the country oldies, which included a lot of George Jones songs with Blue Ridge Bob doing the DJ'ing. But at 6 pm the oldies quit and the simulcast began. However, there were numerous mentions of things going on at the station next week, including a special look back at the music of George Jones at 9 am Monday. What good does it do to simulcast another local radio station's talk programming only on weekends? This is all very odd.
