What have we learned today?

H

I always liked the end of Craig Kilborn's version of The Daily Show where before his moment of zen, he asked what have we learned today?

I have learned in the past few days that some think Hilton has a huge ego... some think that ego make the radio-boy effective... Rev-FM has a big but somewhat spotty signal... Glen Turner is a funny guy... Grooves likes to drink and will be back for The Arts Festival... it costs an arm and a leg to buy back Arbitron ratings and some people think 3WZ is a lucky station.

Amazing what you can learn.

What is next? Will we learn that Joe Paterno actually has gray hair? Will we learn that State College is more important than NYC? Will we find out that Scott Shannon will leave WPLJ to come work for Forever? Will we learn that G101 is actually the creation of Penny Mock and John Walko from a beer napkin found tucked in an old Valley Dairy bench in Johnstown?

Questions... Questions... Questions.

The goal in life is to learn something new everyday.

I forgot, will we learn that Z100 has called Revbabe and told her she was hot enough to be a Z100 t-shirt model?

The fun continues.

G101 is not the creation of...., rather the reincarnation of WPRR, circa 1987-88; complete with the Mitch Craig liners and eerily-close adherence to the old, Darrell Ray-developed format clock (yeah, the old hand-drawn clock that used to hang under the window in the W. Albert Dr. studios). Only difference is the G101's lack of jingles.

What I have learned

The Lord loves a working man.
Don't trust whitey.
If you catch it, see a doctor and get rid of it.

Nice idea but no, it goes back to the smame era but WIYQ 99.1 would be more the model we used at the time, yes its Mitch for liners but the clocks and everything else is a CHR concept that was used for years and years with nothing to do with PRR. They did sound great in toona and still do. Its not a copy of PRR, its a copy of WCAU in Phlly at the time and a copy of Z 100 at the time, a copy of WINK and every fun uptempo pop station. its a good old fashioned CHR and WPRR sure did not invent that!

Like to add that the old WIYQ had nothing going for it and no support but the concept was good.

So can we now call G-101 State College's pow-pow-power station?

Mitch Craig didn't come along on WPRR until 1991, after Darrell had gone, and Scott St. John for that matter. Scott had used Dude Walker through Mitch's company and I went with Mitch himself.

Scott changed the WPRR clocks after Darrell left, and I changed them after Scott left, but the changes weren't huge.

You're going to hurt Harlow's feelings. All the jocks stunk, myself included. Well, Matt was ok, Harlow was Harlow, but the rest of us sucked. But we had a lot of fun and the concept was good.
There was that one time that Mike McKendree said "sh*t" on the air, we had that going for us. I listen to WWGE all the time hoping Mike will do it again but so far he hasn't.

Pow Pow power hissss

Thank God and a good engineer that its not the power hiss station, found the issue yesterday and fixed it. Waiting on two parts for %100 on the STL sound.

The old WIYQ liners were by a texas company called supertraxx, in 1987 the cost $225 total for the whole deal! McCall just cant come to grips with Harlow hitting the post better then him.....

M- do you want to tell the story of berry, berry of let sleeping dogs or should I say "dwawgs teep"?

From the inception to 1991, other than some changes in the placement of music (A's, B's, recurrents, etc.), the only major change in the clock that I remember was when Scott eliminated all liners, jingles, and segues--the goal to sound like WNCI, Columbus. I'm not sure how long that lasted, because I retired shortly after it was implemented.

I am berry berry concermed about this convuh... talk.

Wighteous A

In my opinion, no format can fully unveil the majesty of “IYQ” Style without the use of the “Righteous A” What is the Righteous A? The Righteous A, drawn from the “A” stack of songs, is a song that kicks so much bee-hind that the DJ saw fit to play it whenever he or she wanted to.
The Righteous A would call out from the stack of 45s sown into their crisp red folders, demanding to be cued up.
It was a feeling. An unquenchable desire to kick it. Usually at the top of the hour, or right after a commercial break. When the first beat stomped after a breaker there was a rush of bliss. The soulful tunes could just melt into the etheric airwaves after the weather.
Jamming Me. Ship of Fools. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.
All these were Righteous A’s
The power of the Righteous A was unmatched. Often, when the general manager heard a song that never hit the top 10 for the second time in four hours, an expression would appear on his face. We called it the “question mark” face. Even though he may have been angry that we broke format, he recognized that we had achieved a true radio moment. His anger softened to a mild bemusement. He was in the command of the Righteous A.

Of all the radio stations I worked at, WIYQ is the one I will never forget. We were a bunch of kids living out a dream. I don't know if I should take it that I stunk or was halfway decent.

We all have got better since those days. I only wish I had the ability to be the "Sultan of Segue" that Matt Swayne was.

I enjoyed trying to copy some big city radio with a bunch of kids to include myself. We actually didn't do too bad in the Arbitrons either.

I remember that. It seemed like we had sixteen talks per hour.

The stopsets moved a few times. They moved to :16, :31, and :42. For a while there was a break at :56 and swept to the bottom of the hour. Eventually they moved back to :20, :35 and :46.

People who didn't work there and maybe some who did probably find this extremely boring. It brings back some memories though.

That wasn't McCall, that was Snyder.

The funniest thing was, right after IYQ went satellite, WGLU went from GLU92 to CHR as Power 92, using the exact same supertraxx voice guy. Then Tercek went over there, and eventually they moved to 99.1.
WPRR became Altoonas Power Station right around that time as well. So "Power Hits WIYQ" was ahead of the time.
Edited by McCall on 07/14/05 11:48 PM.

Re: Wighteous A

There was nothing more important than having a Righteous A on the air.

The Righteous A was a staple of WIYQ.

The more I think about it, it seems that we were way ahead of the curve with WIYQ. Just imagine if we had someone who actually sold advertising.

I'll voice the legal ID live today at 4pm, can't promise an S-Bomb,
certainly can't rule one out either. Thanks for listening

Hey Harlow I remember you on Swingin 101....but remember, nothing beats Big Gene falling asleep during the overnights or RadioRich playin REM Driver 8 because he thought it sounded country!

Ahh, Shotgun Mark Curtis on Swingin 101. That is a memory. Radio Rich was always something special LOL.

You never got to see Big Gene in action, and you are so lucky for that. I think I am scarred for life by seeing some of the things I saw.

Boy, did Big Gene get pissed when we hid the Hank Williams album that contained the song he played at 12:05am. Or, maybe it was because we cued his ID to yell simply "Gene!", instead of the "Ladies and gentlemen, you listnening...."
