What Houston wants right now...

Is an Alternative AC radio station (Like Minneapolis' KTCZ or Seattle's KMTT). I wish The Point would distant itself from K-Hits. When The Point played Skynyrd, K-Hits also played Skynyrd as well. I'd like the Point to move itself away from Classic Hits (Mostly "80s) to the music I probably I hear a lot from "Gray's Anatomy" : Coldplay, Mat Kearney, KT Tunstall, James Blunt, U2, Green Day, Jewel, RHCP, Dave Matthews, & Gnarls Barkley. I'm so sick of tired of the Awesome '80s. I believe it's about time this station needs to grow up.

You just described the AAA (Adult Album Alternative) format... cool when done well, an absolute nightmare when done poorly. 93.7 has it on their HD-2 so I doubt anyone in Houston would flip their main frequency to it. Aside from the ones you mentioned, other good examples of the format to check out are KBCO/Denver-Boulder, WXRT/Chicago, and KFOG/San Francisco... pretty sure they all stream online.

Well, I'm guessing if KHPT(The Point) doesn't flip to Triple A, Maybe KKRW (The Arrow) will. In Fact, CC owns KBCO & KTCZ (Cities97). The Arrow has a good sound for Triple A, it will perfectly go well.

I believe there's a sign that one of these three poorly-rated stations needs to be flipped immediately. Besides those 2 stations I was telling you, (KHPT & KKRW), KIOL is also on the short list as well. Besides Triple A, another format Houston wishes for is Christian Rock/CCM. I think I should rule out KHTC.(K-Hits), because it already had an extreme makeover going from Oldies to Classic Hits. Scott Sparks needs to do something wth The Point, because that station does'nt have a decent morning show. My point is maybe they can find Whoopi, Kidd Kraddick or somebody within the syndie market.

Just curious Troy, but how are you so tapped into the Houston market that you know what it wants? My guess is that all of the overly large companies do market research prior to launching a station in order to find the largest audience that they can. Wouldn't this have turned up somewhere if Houston wanted it? Not bagging on you, just trying to understand where you are coming from.

That makes sense, but you said "what Houston wants". I think there are many stations in the market that understand their listeners and give them what they want. Just because it's not what you or I want doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing, or that they don't understand their audience. It just means you or I are not their audience.

"Coldplay, Mat Kearney, KT Tunstall, James Blunt, U2, Green Day, Jewel, RHCP, Dave Matthews, & Gnarls Barkley."

Doesn't The MIX and now KRBE churn out most of this on a regular basis? Why do we need another station to play these songs?

These artists, with select 80's hits and 90's hits (aka music like the 90's and more version of KROI) and we have a BETTER version of Mix, which would be destroyed if this station came to be. Mix needs to be "kissed" while the time is right.

If there was a Triple A station out there, MIX 96.5 WOULD be a good fit. Among those artists, I would add some Bowie, Tracy Chapman, and Squeeze (From the '80s) and Hootie, 3 Doors Down, and Sheryl Crow (Ftom the '90s). Plus Norah Jones, Corinne Bailey Rae, & Jon Mayer to the fray.

"market research" --- hahahahahahahahahahaha. We're doing a heckuva job with market research.

Dont listen to anyone here, Troy, and dont back down. Your question is brilliant. The emperor has no clothes.

We could throw everything all out-and let the listeners have their own say. Ibelieve we could end getting Triple A after all.

MIX was born when Guy Zapoleon researched and found the "holes" in music that wasn't being played on radio -- Triple A would fit that bill the most.

Looking at R&R's AAA Top 10, you have at least three big selling artists with songs there that are NOT being played anywhere in Houston -- U2 "Window in the Skies", Norah Jones "Thinking About You", and Beck "Think I'm in Love." You also have once-indie artists who have had a top 10 album without current Houston airplay (Death Cab for Cutie), an artist who with a AAA hit that will cross over to MIX hopefolly by the Fall (Gomez "See The World"), and classics, like JJ. Cale & Eric Clapton.

In my opinion, the best AAA station in the country is KINK in Portland, OR (http://www.kink.fm/). Plus, you gotta love the call letters...

For those who want an AAA format Hows this for a playlist:
I've been listening to this since I got to work tonight..
//FWIW, when KPFT isn't trying to shove their political BS down our throats, they don;t play that bad of music. But it seems that every time I'm catching a groove from them, the music ends for this week in PETA or whatever. Total buzzkill. Anywho check out the playlist..
