What I am about to admit.

Well you would understand that what I am about to admit is true!!! The thing is I am a College student and I would love to get in the field of communications especially broadcast, but I am also a history buff but do not want to be a teacher which is why I decided at the last mintue not to major in education. Sometimes I think radio stations (some not all) just don't serve the community to its purpose as why the station was granted its right to broadcast. At first I thought the FCC granted a station license to help serve a purpose to the community. Today no one challenges the license so the stations where a company is force to more for the community. I could name a couple of stations and one company which we all know well in this area as The Eagle and The Point with Cox Radio but they play great music just not out their in the community. Then their are other stations that do well with the community and when that happens the numbers will show on the ratings. Take Renda for example with Gator Country. Look at wbat they have just done in six months. They came to Jax gave tickets away to a concert on their first day on air here after that month long of commerical free music which did help to their advantage. Next they do a summer concert series and promotes everywhere and anywhere which gave them a big listner boost. Then even do more free concerts again and then do a free gas give away and then top it all off they do a teddy bear drive to give to the kids who are sick in the hospital a bear to make the feel better at the holidays then all of sudden their faces are just a grinning. In six months time CC took their competor WROO and put them on a low grade signal thanks to Lex & Terry and then to top it all off they just declared their first ratings victory over WROO. They are doing the same here as they done in Ft. Meyers and it is going to work again. Believe me I have faith in Renda and they will come out on top this year. And now Dallas is in jail with Steve Smith from FCN doing a blood drive for the FGBA. This is what I call community. Heck even KOOL and Lite do more than Cox does for community even CC does more than Cox. Hopefully you understand why I want to get into communications is to put it back where the listner can be the star not the jock be the star for his whole show but 50/50. Later.

I pretty much agree with you, but don't waste your education just to get into radio. I have a Bachelor's in Communications that is basically worthless. Spent all that money to go to an SEC school and it never paid off. I feel the same as you but after 17 years in the business (and a family now) I decided I could no longer make a huge difference nor support the family I love. So I left radio one year ago and have not looked back. Made over double the pay and get WAAYYYY more time off.

If I were you, I would be a teacher. At least you'll get summer vacation and not work 6 days a week like a lot of radio jocks.

Good Luck!

I wish you the best, Mburg. You certainly have the enthusiasm and a passion for radio. I mentioned sometime back as to where young folks get opportunity to get into radio. I suggested stations try placing people somewhere on a schedule after 7PM weekdays and somewhere in that vast automation land known now as weekends. I think many young people would jump at the opportunity to gain experience even if they had to work dirt cheap. I'm sure experienced broadcasters would also be honored to be a mentor if given the opportunity. No one responded but that's par for the course.

I agree with you about community involvment. This is another way for stations to set themselves apart from satellite alternatives. I don't think there will be much challenge to licence renewal because people are apathetic and corporate radio knows that. With the exception of change in formats, most people rarely get involved or contact a radio station.

Forgot To Mention....

A few years ago, WMXJ (Miami oldies station)replaced their nighttime personality in a very unique way. They held open auditions with the general public at various malls throughout South Florida. These events attracted hundreds of would-be radio "stars" as well as curious onlookers that proved to be a very successful promotion.

When the choice was narrowed, listeners had the opportunity to vote on the best candidate. And the listeners chose Vance Phillips who can still be heard to this day week nights. I don't believe this guy had even 1 day of radio experience. Talk about thinking outside of the box! This is one of my major complaints about Jax Radio. The inovative thinking is minus infinity.

WMXJ (Majic 102.7)streams on the internet at www.majic1027.com if you want to check Vance out (he sounds a little like Wolfman Jack)and to hear what a well-programmed oldies station sounds like.

Since you would not have been around during what I consider radio's hey day, you may also want to check out www.reelradio.com. This is a repository where you will find tons of radio personalities who made everything so exciting. In particular, check out WABC. In my opinion, this was the best Top 40 station ever but KHJ in LA had a lot of personality too! Enjoy!

Mburg, and others,

WFBO-LP 93.3 FM actively recruits jocks for thier oldies formatted station. This is a volunteer thing, in Flagler Beach, FL (on the beach from Palm Coast). If you got a good aircheck (demo or from on-air), then you need to talk to Thier Morning Man and General Manager, K.P. Manning. 386-439-2549, or www.theblizzard.us. They cover a chunk of Flagler County and stream on the web and play literally a library of over 4,000 hits!

A tip for the huddled radiogeek masses,

Skinny Al.
