"What I'd do with WHJJ if I were Clear Channel..."

I see what you are saying "wknd92" about Matt. Job security is nice. But being underappreciated isn't. Matt gets passed over time and time again. I would hate to see the guy get stuck at PRO for several more years as a Producer when it's clear that he shines on the air. I just think there are plenty of other stations in America who would offer him so much more. His career could really excel and I think he could become BIG! But that can't happen if he's stuck where he is now. Hey maybe he's happy. If that's the case than fine. I just think that he deserves more.

Oh I just think we all deserve more

If YOU were Clear Channel, what would YOU do?

I'll start, with #1, 2 and 3 of 6-things-I-would-do-with-WHJJ-if-I-were-Clear Channel:

#1: Simulcast it on WSNE.

And I say this as a former WSNE PD, and with genuine respect to the folks who toil at The Coast: It's the-one-music-station-too-many here. Take the WSNE programming expense to-the-bottom-line.

"But there's $X million in revenue there!"
There WAS.
With Buddy joining WPRO, the game changes.

Want to feel like you're in an iPod commercial?
WALK DOWN THE STREET.
Talk Radio will save FM...but not every FM. Just the first few smart-enough-to-see-this-coming-on-stilts.

Be "WHJJ AM/FM, PROVIDENCE," and take Talk Radio into a couple Arbitron Zips where WPRO struggles at night...and to the many people just don't use AM radio.

#2: Steal Rush Limbaugh.

Clear Channel already owns him; and for-all-we-know WPRO might be about to dump him, and is using recent PR as disinformation.

Make this A BIG DEAL promotionally.

#3: STOP SAYING THE WORD "NEWS."

You might as well be saying "WPRO."
It's like "Kleenex," "Scotch Tape," and "Xerox."

Stop playing WPRO's game, and be TALK.

I've got 3 more, but don't want to hog the mic.

What would YOU do with WHJJ if YOU were Clear Channel?

And what do WPRO changes mean for Matt Allen?

Obviously a gig 6-7pm 5 days a week....now will everybody leave WPRO management alone!?!

1 hour a day on WPRO at this time is much better than a couple of hours down the dial

This whole thing will be interesting to follow. Talked to the Troll a couple weeks back; he was thinking of trying to put the jazz/swing stuff he'd been running on 990 and 102.7,on 920 at night. I think it would be something different than the dreck 920 pushes out when I hear them on a trip back home.

Somehow, it would be Kharmic justice for Steve to get another bite at the apple. The 102.7 sale / 990 plug-pulling came just as folks were starting to find the format (especially those like me for whom the 102.7 signal was simply too scratchy to enjoy).

Hope it works out for Steve. In the meantime, the U-Mass Dartmouth station on 89.3 devotes most of its Sundays to Jazz and Blues. I think it's something like 8 am to 5 pm.

Unfortunately, if HJJ stops playing WPRO and goes to Talk, you know what's next...

"Where's the local?"

But I agree WHJJ needs to be Talk. Here's the $.02 of a guy who hasn't lived in Providence in over a decade (and never worked in the industry there, so take it FWIW):

1. Flip the calls back to WJAR
2. The 93.3 FM simulcast happens (as WJAR-FM)
3. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you look at things in "that" way) every local talkers I know (with the exception of Arlene) is over on the Trail, so you'll have to go syndicated. Here's what I was thinking (and I may be WAYYYYY off the rocker with this so forgive me if I am)

6-9 AM - ???? (This would normally be local, but I'm sure that you all could think of someone who would fit here better than I)

9AM-Noon - Gene Valicenti (Gene Gene the Ratings Machine...I put him here as it would probably take something like this to draw any sort of attention)

Noon-3 PM - Rush Limbaugh

3-6 PM - Todd Schnitt

6-10PM - Neal Boortz (tape delayed)

10PM-1AM - Phil Hendrie (TRN)

1AM-5AM - Joey Reynolds (WOR)

5-6AM - "The best of whomever is in AM drive"

CC wouldn't be able to bring the WJAR calls back to radio unless some sort of deal could be worked out with Channel 10 owner Media General. Sounds like it would be too much of a hassle just for a set of calls.

For the 10 pm to 1 am slot, 810 WGY in Schenectady, NY is running the syndicated Rollye James Show (live in that time slot). She's sort of a cross between Art Bell, and "conspiracy theory" type hosts. I think she's also carried on XM.

No need for any kind of "Best Of" in the 5 to 6 am hour if you follow the example of Buffalo's 1520 WWKB, and run Joey Reynolds for the full five hours from 1 am to 6 am.

This schedule clearly shows that Clear Channel is just "mailing it in" in Providence. They put more effort into WTAG-AM 580 in Worcester which has upstart WCRN as a competitor. At least in Worcester at WTAG, they're still live and local in AM & PM drive.

I truly believe that Providence, a capital city could support two competitve local talk stations, with the emphasis on local.

Sorta makes you wonder just how long CC wil hang in there with 920 before placing it in that "Aloha" trust they have set up for the hundreds of station they're trying to rid themselves of?

Flip WSNE to talk. Put local hosts on from 6a to 6p.Leave WHJJ with all the syndicated stuff but move Helen to a midday shift on WSNE as talk.
WSNE sounds so blah these days its terrible.

What I'd do??

I'd get some old newspaper . Spread it around.
Pour Gasoline on the Newspaper.
Lite a Match...
Wait one hour.
Call 911.

Ion the Comic ;D

Coast is so bad it turns gay people straight then they stop listening to Coast
Coast is so bad when new people get hired the ones there ask "so what are you in for?"

As a MInister I knew once, wait till all the old, tenacious groups passes on, then changes, and they did occur for the better.

SOOO, knowing the local mentality of the local older folk, perhaps, when they are gone positive changes will take place, provinciality will be taken over by outward reaching and thinking persons.

WHJJ has absolutely no intension's of changing format. They are committed to stay with talk. Which in my mind is too bad.

Clear Channel won't sell their their stations in Providence and WSNE won't be going talk either. It bills too much in it's current format to screw with it.

That goes to show you the mind set of Clear Channel/Providence.
