"What If Apple Marketed HD Radio"

"What If Apple Marketed HD Radio"

"With the iPhone, Apple even tells its visitors how to get ready to buy. Can you imagine creating such anticipation for this amazing new "high definition" set? The ultimate obituary for HD radio is that even Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Radio Shack can't move HD radios off their shelves... And Apple won't even include FM capability on its iPods and phones. Get the message?"

Get the message ? :D

If "the message" is that there's no demand for radio, you've got a helluva lot of nerve dispensing that "message" in a room full of broadcasters, I'll give you that.

Why not come visit, and we'll talk about it. A little caveat...in the south, even the liberals are armed! ;)

KIDDING! Of course that's not a threat. But it is TRUE (we all have guns. Maybe that's why everybody's so damn nice. They're afraid not to be!)

Jerry Del Colliano is the author - think I care ?

'We all have guns?'

What part of the South are you from? I don't own guns, my friends don't own guns, we don't teach guns or 'gun anything' to our children and they are all alive and well, now the ones we do know that own guns have either shot themselves or the children have taken the guns to school and either have been suspended or have shot one or another or themselves or caused crimes... pitty the poor minded persons that believe this is the way the South is but in reality it's the mindset of 'REDNECKS' that believe this is the way to live. Yeah we have alot of them here in Georgia!

Oh that's a joke (sort of). It's kind of disturbing in a way, but gun ownership is HUGE in the south.

I've never bought a gun. But I did inherit a few from my father and grandfather. I don't hunt...I'm an animal lover, could never kill Bambi. I don't even shoot anymore...I'm legally blind, so it's probably not a good idea. But like most people who grew up in the rural south, I was taught to shoot, and to respect guns when I was a kid. My dad also didn't hunt...didn't have a desire to kill anything. But target shooting is a sport. An OLYMPIC sport, even...one I was taught to enjoy as a kid. And if you called my dad a "redneck", he'd probably say "thank you". He had a coffee mug on his desk that said "please don't smoke". When he took a drink, you could see the rest of the message on the bottom "and I won't..." err, the four letter word for passing gas. That was my dad. So what do you think he did (from the above description?) He was a physics and chemistry professor, with a master's degree, working on his doctoral thesis at the time of his (premature) death at 52. Oh...and he was a Democrat, just like me...and socially liberal. Doesn't fit the stereotype, huh?

I would hope that you would teach your children that guns are potentially dangerous, but when used properly, they're simply tools. A gun is a helluva' lot less dangerous than an automobile, and I assume at some point your children will use one of those.

If you REALLY live in the south, and don't think gun ownership is higher than other parts of the country, you must be a transplanted Yankee. Live in Atlanta, do ya'? As great southern humorist Lewis Grizzaard used to say, Atlanta is San Francisco's southern headquarters.

I live on an island east of Savannah, YES I have friends that hunt and own guns, most are doctors, lawyers, business owners, quite the 180 degree from the guy west of Savannah living in a mobile home with run down vehicles on blocks, old washing machines out front, etc., these are the types otherwise depicted in Burt Reynolds movies...

Transplanted... you bet after having been raised in Morristown, N.J., gone to college and worked in Florida till 1988, out to Seattle, WA. till 1995, then to Savannah and still here, YES I would say I'm transplanted, but with a sense of well being for myself and others.

Atlanta, yes I would say that is a wasteland... I'm sure Lewis Grizzaard had his own condo somewhere in Atlanta and strolled down the bars and clubs in his time, as far as guns in Atlanta, it's had it's share of crimes, in Savannah there might be 5 murders/killings in a year and THAT's a big thing, while Atlanta probably has 200-400 murders by guns or some other means.. YEAH I avoid Atlanta like a plague.

There is no reason to teach gun safety to children if there's no gun in the house, and we teach them NOT to handle a gun and not to have a need for them.. quite simple unless they are going into the military, or police training or hunting there's no real need to get them involved, it has nothing to do with flusiness or gayness as you infer... too bad it's feeble minded people who believe if you don't own a gun you must be '__________' fill in the blank!

That's great Mike your dad own guns and hunted, so did my dad and Pennsylavania, upstate New York were his hunting grounds with his friends, but never did he have to teach us gun safety or teach us guns and never kept guns in the house, that was his legacy and we all have done great!

My dad owned guns. NEITHER OF US HUNTED! We are liberals, after all (southern ones, but still). I have no problem with people who need to hunt to feed their families. But I don't think I could ever do it. Neither could my dad.

We lived in Ronda, NC, where on weekends we went to the river bottom, or under the "Bugaboo Creek Bridge", and blew the hell out of tin cans.

My dad taught physics. How can you teach physics, and not be interested in guns? INTERESTED IN, not necessarily a gun owner. Dad used an air rifle and an air pistol in class to teach students how to measure velocity. He was about a helluva lot more than that!

If you'd grown up in the south, you'd realize that guns are a part of southern culture. They're NOT a part of my daily life. Had I not inherited guns, I wouldn't own one. But they're family heirlooms, owned by people I loved.

On another subject, Savannah is SUCH a beautiful city. As is Atlanta. And Charleston. People from the rest of the country read history. In the south, we live it, and are surrounded by it...aren't we? Around here (northwest NC) we're also surrounded by natural beauty. If there's a more beautiful place than the mountains of NC, VA, TN, WVA, then I don't think I could take it!

Welcome to the south. Just don't marry any of our women (KIDDING!) Speaking of which, Lewis Grizzard had another great saying..."I don't hate Yankees. In fact, I love 'em. Some of them are great people. Now my dad hated Yankees. In fact, he used to read the obituaries in the New York Times...for fun!" His southern color didn't end there, however. He had another observation that perhaps you've noticed about the south "Iced tea, is the house wine of the south".

Now I don't have children, so what I say is obviously ill-informed...except that I WAS a child once. I can think of an excellent reason to teach children about gun safety, even if there are no guns in the house. There are guns IN THE WORLD. There are no helicopters in you house, either I assume...but children probably shouldn't grow up terrified of them. Again...a helicopter has more potential to kill or injure than do most guns. Did you take shop in school? If used carefully, ots of the tools you used were as dangerous, or more so than a small gun. Were you terrified of them?

My point is that "gun culture" isn't a part of my life. I'm just not interested. But neither do I feel threatened by those who are.

Great chatting about some of my favorite subjects.

I grew up with guns also, though they were never in the house, of course we played with the 'bb guns', bow & arrows, I also taught both my kids the bow and arrow as well as the Boy's Scout target shooting, I also taught and informed the dangers of guns to my children as well as the necessity of guns in our society (police, military, etc.), but as long as there is no need to own or possess a gun other than collectable objects why have them? I collect swords and Spanish memorabilia from the past but have never come across a gun or rifle to yet to collect.

Yes I did marry a girl from the South (Palm Beach, FL.) and am grateful, southern women are graceful and beautiful, glad I did, the South is great and no other place I'd be after having traveled and live across the U.S.

Funny you should mention 'shop' at school, woodworking and electronics shop was my best as it involved hands on and creativity, wouldn't be an engineer if it wasn't for those classes, but my dad had other ideas for me having been a physician, I think I always let him down and he relented those feelings before his departure lasts September, so hopefully both my kids take up the reigns as medical professionals and take up my stead.
