What if ME-TV & Antenna merged?

I was thinking about the possibility of ME & Antenna merging. I am sure they would cover close to 100% of the country and what a great library of programs they would have. If you remember, Comedy Central exists because of the merging of two competing comedy channels about 20 years ago. At this point ME-TV has an edge on Antenna but Antenna has some major stations in major markets locked up.

I dont think they will merge, but once MeTV gains all the stations it can Antenna TV should slowly catch up. I would love to have ATV as well...... ;)

I have both. Honestly I think ME-TV trumps Antenna. But give it about a year and I think Antenna will be as good as ME-TV. Besides competition is good.

i think both channels are fine as they are.i like ME -TV better but i like antenna tv as well.

i dont want any of those channels to loose their feel.if they merged thats what would happen.

What would happen?
Same as in any other merger.
Fewer choices for the public and revenue enhancement for those repsonsible for the "synergy".
I already wonder why we have 3 or 4 seperate Me-TV OTA signals in Chicago, when they all have the same programming. ???

Ridiculous thread.

I don't find the topic ridiculous. You may not agree with the idea (I don't, either), but it is a good topic to discuss so all others could learn about the possible effects of mergers based on past knowledge.

A merger of Me-TV and Antenna TV may be good for folks who do not have access to programming from one service or the other, but the results may include lost employees and less variety in programming.

As another poster noted, in Chicago we have not only Me-TV but its sister station Me-Too. A lot of the programming on Me-Too is duplicated on Antenna TV. Originally, Me-Too was made to carry the big lot of programs Me-TV couldn't carry. Then Weigel separated drama from comedy. Me-TV went to comedy only, while Me-Too went to drama. Brilliant move. Of course when Me-TV went national, it switched back.

That would be the next logical step for Me-TV to create a sister subchannel network and make Me-TV comedy and the new network (presumably called Me-Too) drama.

In Chicago, Tribune and Weigel have never had an adversarial relationship. WGN and WCIU share, "The Family Guy," WCIU broadcasts sports that WGN passes over (usually to broadcast CW shows).

I also agree mergers tend to mean less programming and less creative effort.

If MeTV & Antenna TV merged, it depends on who merged with who as to how well it would be run. If Weigel acquired Antenna TV, it would mean that programming could be expanded, & I see the MeTV brand expand, & phase out Antenna TV. If you remember, the programming on MeTV when it was just in Chicago was well balanced, from nearly all the big name distributors. When they decided to go national with MeTV, they had to move all the shows from the Sony library over to MeToo, since Tribune has the Sony library on the national level. Now, both MeTV & Antenna TV share the NBC Universal & 20th Century Fox libraries (Antenna TV will be carrying WKRP in Cincinnati from that library). They however don't share Sony & CBS libraries on a national level, but Weigel does have the rights to the Sony library for just Chicago, & why those shows moved over to MeToo.

To Tom Wells who complained about the overlap in MeTV & MeToo on 4 different channels in Chicago: you have to remember that MeTV & MeToo are not only on low power stations as they originally were done (both analog & digital), but the simulcast on WCIU subchannels are meant to reach those outside of the broadcast areas of their low power stations (WWME-LD for MeTV & WMEU-LD for MeToo). As for overlap in programming from MeTV & MeToo does seem odd. There's no need to carry anything that's already on MeTV on MeToo. MeToo was made to be the Chicago MeTV after MeTV went nationwide. So programs should not duplicate, as we already can watch them on MeTV. The only non-duplication in programming, or subchannel simulcast is their affiliation with Bounce (another topic for a differnt day).

Overall, I want to see both MeTV & Antenna TV succeed & not merged.
