What if......

Couple of hypothetical questions for you radio experts out there.....What if CBS pulled the plug on The Fan? Would/Could the Cowboys be able to get out of that 10 year contract? Would they just stay with the station regardless of a new format?

Does anyone know if there is a clause in the contract that would come into play if The Fan changes the format from all sports.

And Barry Horn recently wrote that ratings for the games are very low, so do the Cowboys really care about the radio ratings?

I can't tell you the last time I LISTENED to a Cowboys game on radio. It would only be because I was traveling. I'm guessing it's the same for most people. People who are Cowboys fans plant their butt in front of the TV when it's game time.

They could broadcast Cowboy games on KRLD 1080.

IIRC, the contract between the Cowboys and KTCK was a 5 year deal. Since they were only there 3 years, obviously that's not right. i was later told that it was actually a 2 year deal with 3 one year options on the back end.

I would think that most likely the KRLD-FM contract is basically the same. Couple of years up front, then team (or station) options for the rest.

And if Jerry (Or Stephen, he's the contract guy) has half a brain, they have an escape clause in case KRLD-FM goes belly up. My guess would be that CBS can keep the Cowboys if they find a "mutually agreeable" station to put it on. Which to me would be the massive footprint of KRLD-AM.

And SalemJedi can probably weigh in here, he's got some sports sponsorship knowledge to spare...But IMHO, they do AND they don't. Some of the advertisers don't care about the ratings, they just want the association with the team. Or the radio is part of a package that they buy in to (In other words- Pepsi really wants the signage at the stadium, they'll 'buy' X amount of radio ads as part of their deal- or American Airlies is the official charter- they 'buy' a spot in every game as part of that deal, etc...)

But there are probably a fair number of advertisers that DO look at the numbers. And what I've been told is that the Fan's ratings are about 1/2 to 1/3rd of what KTCK's were. And that's the point where ad agencies, smart buyers, etc, start asking teh value question. "You want HOW much for those in game spots? "

I do watch the game on TV and listen to Brad and Babe on the radio. I have been doing that for the past 27 years.

This year the delay is horrible. In years past the delay was tv behind radio, now this year radio is behind tv a good 5-10 seconds.

Usually, the team sports sponsorships cover the following: In stadium signage, radio, TV, print marketing. Most sponsors get rights to team logos and players, things of that nature. The team gets the money. So little 1 you are right.

As far as I have heard, the Cowboys want to stay on an FM station. Thats why 93.3 was part of the deal with Cumulus. So KRLD 1080 would be out of the question. The Cowboys control most of the in-game inventory. I don't know the terms of what The Fan controls. I know when the Cowboys were on KTCK, they controled everything. Pre-game, in-game and post-game, plus coaches shows, player shows, and The Ranch Reports. I think CBS is married to the the sports format on KRLD-FM because of the Cowboys, Rangers and TMS.

What if they put The Cowboys on 98.7 KLUV where the voice of the Dallas Cowboys has a morning show (Jody Dean)? Rangers back to KRLD-AM and either put TMS on AM or move it to The Ticket or ESPN. JMHO.

They could put them back on KLUV. TMS has an IRON CLAD contract with CBS. TMS was the hold up for the announcement of the Cowboys to the Fan. CBS had to make MAJOR concessions to TMS/NASCAR to move them on KRLD 1080 when the Cowboys are on 105.3. Who knows what the contract says? If they are contracted to be on KRLD-FM or any the station located at 105.3 in the D/FW DMI, then thats where they will be regardless of the format.

If the questions are hypothetical, why is everyone answering?
Because we can read ratings? And understand that being 20th-to 25th in your demo, in a very expensive format to run, is most likely an unsustainable business model.

Granted, we could be wrong. Maybe CBS is willing to continue to lose money on the Fan for years and years. (Which is fine with me, I don't own CBS stock any more)

But let me repeat. they're doing 20th (or worse) IN THEIR DEMO. Not 23rd overall, not 25th Persons 25-54, they're doing that bad MEN 25-54, their supposed target demo. An dthey have PLENTY of people on staff. at least 4 on the morning show (Jagger, Mike, Dean, Jasmine) at least 3-4 on mid mornings (Newey, Richie, screener/producer & board op)(or is that one job?) 3-4-5 on afternoons (Barsky, Greg, Sybil (traffic) producer, board op) Arnie, and producer/screener/board op at night.

Even at low wages, that's a lot of money to be putting out for TWENTY FIFTH IN YOUR DEMO.

Unless they're a loss leader, I don't see how they continue to get such poor ratings and have that many live people on staff...

(And did I mention that the're doing horribly in their demo?)

If the Fan keeps sports, I dont' see how they avoid bringing in nationally syndicated shows for part of the day so they can combine their best talent (shudder) into two local shows a day.

As it stands now, the Fan exists for people who have been banned from calling into other stations.

Yep.
And the majority of radio billing is 6a-7p. And yet the Fan is paying Arnie to be on 6-10p?

Doesn't make sense. Unless (unfounded speculation here) Arnie is Bigby's 'bench' and he's holding onto him until Jagger's contract is up.

Dunham and Miller have the number 1 rated morning show in the market- if the Fan really wants to kidkey punch the Ticket, they need to start by doing something there. And Jagger does okay, but he's certainly not hurting KTCK's AM drive ratings...

A real sportsy, call-intensive morning show might be the way to go. No lifestyle crap, no TMZ (For Jagger) or yuk Monkey (Gordon keith) segments, just lots of local sports opinions. It would challenge KTCK where they're weakest (in actually talking sports on a sports station) and be much more local than Mike and Mike on ESPN.

Does that mean, dare I say, Jim Rome? ::)

Is it me or does it seem that the hosts tend to get more annoyed w/ the calls the longer their shows go on? I believe this was one of the reasons B & S quit because they hated taking calls. Just an observation.

That is true, calls do not work and hosts don't want to do it. People do not want to hear caller's opinion and they really don't want to hear a lot of so called sports "expertise". They want to be entertained. That's what the Ticket understands. The Ticket gets high ratings from the bits and shtick between the redundent sports talk, not expertise or taking calls.

The formula for The Ticket's success is they pepper in the sports around the entertaining, were as ESPN and The Fan try the opposite.
