What is 1190 am doing?

I haven't seen any posts about 1190 in a while. I'm assuming it's playing sort of a "Jack for Boomers" format (at least that's what I heard last). What are they up to now? Are they?

1) Living up to what was expected of them?

2) Making any headway with spot sales?

3) Sounding good technically?

4) Showing up in the ratings?

5) Hiring any jocks?

If they're doing anything worth discussing, let's discuss it.

I only listen to it occassionally, but there have been two separate occassions that I heard when it was obvious that there was no board operator at all. Essentially, while one song was in the middle of playing, another song would start, as well as a voice tracked voice over. The result was three different things playing at the same time.

Personally, I enjoy the music on 1160 much better. They're kind of doing a Jukebox Format for Classic R&B: Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, etc..

The only way that people will hear that 1190 and 1160 are commercial free is from word of mouth. If there were billboards and television commercials, they could easily have a much larger audience as they continue to go commerical free.

Nothing is expected

Who knows? I doubt it.

At times, very good for AM

Nope

probably never, ever

I've heard this too, but it is rare.

Just a matter of taste, I like 1160 too, but enjoy 1190 better.

Absolutely no promotion. Most of my non-radio friends have no idea it is on the air.

#ifdef AOL
Me too.
#endif

To expand just a bit, I'm probably a P-2 for them. I mostly
listen to AM (for news, sports and talk). For as long as it
lasts, I'll appreciate what 1190 affords for those of us
who don't stray much over to that ``expermental band''
between 88.1 and 107.9 megacycles. :)

"Jack for Boomers" is an apt description. They've got what
seems to be a deep playlist and the occasional trainwreck
is actually enjoyable. There are times when I'll tune out
of WBAP, KSKY, KLIF or KXEB for what I plan to be the
duration of stopset and end up stuck on 1190 for maybe 45
minutes or longer.

I'd guestimate that the music is 80% uptempo, primarily
a broad base of hits (with an ``oh wow'' every now and
then). As I mentioned elsewhere on this board, the audio
processing (loud and punchy) is ideal for the format. It
really does sound as good as I recall WCFL and 13Q sounding
back in their respective heydeys.

So, for me at least, ``Mighty 1190'' and somewhat
surprisingly ``La Que Buena/''107.9 are about all I
listen to nowadays for music on terrestial radio.

Quite a jump from the 60s and 70s when a conversation, even between two non-radio people might begin with, "Guess what I heard on K-L-I-F today."

Actually, if you checked their playlist, it is deeper and more varied than Jack. But all I hear from radio people is: "It can't compete. it's on AM, I hate the segues," -- blah, blah, blah.

Hey if you like your "Brown Eyed Girl" over and over, just listen to KLUV anytime.

Where else could you hear "King Tut" by Steve Martin? :)

It is good, at times, superb.
