What is better?

What would have a better nightime coverage------a 250 watt FM translator or 250 watts nightime coverage on 1230,1240, 1340, 1400,1450, 04 1490 AM?

250 watts ERP is different than 250 watts on the AM broadcast band. FM translators are restricted to 250 watts, but that's effective radiated power yo, those antennas got gain, the transmitter itself might only be doing 50 watts.

I think the FM translator would win in overall coverage though. There is so much noise on the AM band, 250 watts wouldn't make it very far at night. WTAN only has 1000 watts and we barely make it out of Clearwater at night... 250 would barely make it to US-19 lols :D

We are forgetting the most important parameter: height.
Basically, increasing the height of an FM station is like squaring the power.
An eight kilowatt station at just under 200 feet is like a one watt station at 24,000 feet.
Of course there are differences in how the two stations will propagate, but they will each produce aproximately the same size city grade contour.

Therefore if a 1000 watt D/250 watt N AM station could be a serious market contender against much bigger rivals (like KGFJ V. KHJ in LA), then an FM translator could potentially get good ratings with the right format?

Definately height!

Look at our 106.9. The signal is al over North ans South Sa-ra-so-ta! Proper and well into East and Central Bradenton, along with Longboat and Siesta Keys.

The antenna is at Bahia Vista & Beneva with a flea power signal.(55w)

Since they moved it above the mast, it has greatly improved the signal into Lakewood Ranch as well.

They are the only station with a signal at Bee Ridge and Beneva.

...now if they could only figure out how to put the sports into both channels.

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!
