What is going on in Terre Haute?

Didn't these people just get these jobs earlier this year?

Changes At Crossroads Communications/Terre Haute, IN

CROSSROADS COMMUNICATIONS Hot AC WBOW (B-102.7) APD MATT LEUCKING exits due to budget cuts. Reach out to MATT at (812) 239-5495, or [email protected].

In other cluster news, Oldies WSDM and Adult Standards WAXI PD LISA B. KNOTT exits. Swing/weekender CHAD BRUMFIELD is upped to PD for WSDM and Account Executive JOHN SIGMAN takes on PD duties for WAXI.

Oh, and an AE as a PD?

WAXI is a super-small station (~1 KW I think), therefore it has super-small staff. Could be interim too I guess.
Leucking didn't even last 6 months...I think he was still at WMGI 6 months ago. In fact, Indiana Radio Watch reported on the switch on 9/24!

So that's 4 PDs let go or quitting in Terre Haute in under a week. That is a bit shocking.

Also worth noting all of these stations with PDs leaving have had the same format for at least a decade, if memory serves me. I just can't get the idea of a major shakeup out of my head...Maybe Emmis will start by putting Hank on 99.9?

Crossroads is the most screwed up company you will ever find in broadcasting. They let go Matt Luecking, probably the most compotent programming mind in the building, then They still have the legendary Ron Mott and Bryan Thomas on staff and they make a weekend guy and an account executive program directors.

Steve Hall at WTHI was an off air Production Direcror, not Program Director.

I wonder if the Midwest buyout of WACF is making Emmis and Crossroads freak out. I have a friend who does sales who told me look for WSDM to go to a hank like format when they debut on 92.7 in November. Personally If I am Emmis or Midwest absolutely Nothing that comes from Crossroads scare me, becuase they cant do anything right.

Another country station in Terre Haute would make for one stupid move. WTHI is a powerhouse and WACF, albeit an out of town station at least for the time being, gets respectable numbers with its Illinois-targeted country format. Also, isn't the WQTY side of the WQTY/WWBL combo trying to make some sort of dent in Terre Haute as well? Country is well served in and around Terre Haute. There's no need for another station to take the format.

WSDM would be better off to go modern or active rock...even AAA. It would be great to see a station pick up where the old WZZQ left off before it went off the air. I guess we'll just have to see what happens when 97.7 moves to 92.7 on November 1.

As far as the other Crossroads properties are concerned, moving 102.7 to hot AC may have been a smart move...an even smarter move when they got Matt Luecking on board. It'll be interesting to see how much of a hit, if any, the station will have as a result of his departure. Also, WAXI flipping to the ABC Radio Network's True Oldies Channel format is kind of interesting. What little I've heard of the format kind of reminds me of a Jack approach to the oldies format...a broad playlist of 50s, 60s, and 70s music. It may work for them better than Stardust, but moving Oldies Radio to WAXI may have been the smarter move. Also, hiring an AE to do a PD's job, even for a station running an automated satellite format, is a disaster waiting to happen. Granted, I don't know the guy taking the post or his background, but overall, an AE lacks the creativity and overall knowledge of the format and radio in general to construct great (but basic) attention getting liners, working to construct killer contests and promotions, and maintain the overall sound of the station. Take a listen to WGLM in West Lafayette to see what I mean by that.

Terre Haute radio definitely needs to be stirred up a little, but hopefully Crossroads will do something that will better serve the public need and those of the advertisers with WSDM, and the new owners of WACF will either strengthen their existing format to be more "Wabash Valley" friendly or put another format on that will really stir up some attention.

How is the station at 100.7 doing?

WMGI is still #2 (behind WTHI) with a high 9 or low 10 share the last few books. Haven't listened to them on air lately, but I don't know anyone who can stand to listen for very long due to what they say is a limited playlist.

I suppose I should post on here. I always love the Radio-Info stuff. John Sigman was a PD in Brownsville, Texas I believe, and he was doing some sales stuff here in Terre Haute. He is a good guy. I wish he and Sketch (Chad Brumfield) the best. I was at WMGI for years. I couldn't have asked for a better full-time radio career. I had a chance to go over to Crossroads and work for Ernie Caldemone, who departed a week before me, who was shown the door after 4 months. He was very passionate and convinced me to stay in radio. I was told that I was downsized. Sometimes when you see money spent on different forms of advertising it can come in the way of trade. There is a lot of country in Terre Haute. Don't forget that Midwest bought WACF. You are right about Ron Mott and Bryan Thomas being legendary personalities in the market. Crossroads is lucky to have them. I can actually be reached at [email protected]. That posting was wrong. In radio there is often change. I still work at WZPL in Indy and love it. I might be at the point in my radio career where I just do a part-time thing, or if I take another full-time job I become very selective about the opportunity. I have no hard feelings towards Crossroads. I have been considering changing careers for the past 3 years. This just gives me the opportunity. I would like to say that I gave my all to radio for 10 years in the Wabash Valley. It was a great time in my life. I was asked to stay on at Crossroads part-time, and at this time I declined. I am concerned about the state of radio for me in a full-time capacity. I would like some stability. Crossroads gave me a chance to further my radio career. I had a great last show there on Thursday Oct. 13th. I proved a few things to myself, and I learned a few more things about small market radio. Every day is a learning process. Chris Carter, Sketch, and John Sigman will work hard, and I am sure they will do the best they can. It is interesting to me that I made 10 questions on all-access in my last week of employment. It is under the Hot AC section. Thanks to Mark Strickland and all of my industry friends who have called. I still plan on running my mobile music DJ business. I started that way before radio. I love this board, because the people that are on it love radio in one way or the other. Keep up that passion. I am on air at WZPL on Oct. 29th in the afternoon, so it isn't over, just moderated for now. You never know I may get that itch in the future and decide to do radio part-time in the Valley somewhere. I have left that door open. I always wanted to do country radio. That was one thing I didn't get to check off my list.

Re: Could we all agree...

Hi, Matt:

Kudos for being a professional regarding your former employers; that behavior will serve you well, regardless of what profession you find yourself. I have heard you on WZPL and was excited to see that you "got to Indy." I, myself, have also had the fortunate position to work both in small markets and in Indy and find the difference to be quite interesting and a learning experience. I have also gone from full-time broadcasting positions to part-time and have also had that itch to want a more stable future, while still, passionately, loving radio. Likewise, I would be interested in your comments, regarding your experiences and the differences you may or may not see between the small and large players. Again, congratulations on your successes and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Re: Could we all agree...

I would say that Indy has bigger budgets, better access to guests, and bigger ideas. Big ideas are in Terre Haute, but sometimes it is difficult to execute them. Terre Haute gets a bad rap sometimes, but I have always enjoyed this town. It probably has a lot to do with me going to college here and getting my degree from ISU. It is hard being in the smaller market without much of a budget. Lots of things have changed in small market radio in the past few years. You do the best you can with what you have. The fun thing about smaller markets is going to the fairs, festivals, and events. There is nothing like the Covered Bridge, and the Race For the Cure, and everybody knowing someone else that you know. I have been lucky to make lots of friends with people in small and big markets. There are a lot of great people in radio. I have been on the air in the Wabash Valley for 10 years. That is a great run. I am still open to possibly doing something part-time in the future. The people are good in both Indy and Terre Haute that I have worked with. Everyone has the same dreams. Everyone has their idea of their dream job. I just want to evaluate all options. I still have some thoughts of applying for radio jobs, I am just looking at working in the right situation, with the right company in the right place for me. I do see some possible scenarios for me, both in and out of radio. I still love radio to the core. I just want to make sure I make the right decision. I am doing lots of evaluating at this time. I am sure lots of on-air people have gone through this stage in their life. I still run my Dj business, and I love that. I also love WZPL. I would love to work in Indy full-time, but those opportunities are limited. I think the pay in full-time radio, gets to some people over time. If you want to retire at some point, you have to be looking at the bigger picture. I bet there would be a lot of DJ's that still look at this board, that got out of it for something more stable or to make more money, or to have better hours. I followed my dream and loved full-time radio. I have never closed the door to that, but I want to make a good decision. I would be interested to hear from people that were in radio full-time and decided to get out for one reason or the other, and why that was. I can be reached at [email protected]. ke> Hi, Matt:
