Iowa What is going on with the KDLS-FM sale?

Hey, you can have a nice dinner in downtown Des Moines...I know of a couple of good places....

Funny thing is, I've seen no evidence that the 1948 version of KWDM tried to program for West Des Moines, as those call letters might have suggested. Those calls are still around, on the 100-watt FM station at Valley High School, actually in West Des Moines. Whenever I've been in Des Moines, I've found that it's tough to pick up KWDM downtown, even on the higher floors of a hotel.

Going to be interesting hearing español on 1150!

Keep Watching Des Moines

That's what's on the ad copy sheet on desmoinesbroadcasting.com. It also shows the studio address as 407 5th Avenue in Des Moines.

KWDM 1150 Des Moines

lol yep! Everyone makes the mistake of using the local acronym for West Des Moines in the modern day sense and thinking KWDM originally meant that. It does not and never did. In 1948 West Des Moines was around 2,000 people and sat in the shadow of Des Moines proper which had around 175,000 people. The modern day Valley High School KWDM used those calls because of West Des Moines I believe but those calls didn't originate that way.

Just goes to show you its easy to apply our own modern meaning to old world stuff. lol

It's almost like "presentism" but somewhat more benign. I should have checked with desmoinesbroadcasting.com first. Years ago, when they first started the site, I had some communication with the guys who run it (one of them is the brother of a friend of mine) but updates there have been few in recent years. For example, I was really hoping they would build out the history of Russ Van Dyke, but that's another story for another day.

When I've been in West Des Moines, which has been a lot in the past few years, I've been amazed and, quite frankly, appalled at the sprawl. It's now spilled over into Dallas County, for heaven's sake!

Totally understand. If I didn’t know better I’d think the same about WDM.

Growth is good! I get the sprawl issue but in many places beggars can’t be choosers.

Yes, it depends. What I don't like are the isolated subdivisions surrounded by acres of land. I've seen quite a bit of that (like on 88th Street in WDM), where you have to drive everywhere to do anything.
Downtown Des Moines has gone through a revival too, but their one way streets are a pain to navigate.
It's just a grid, so it shouldn't be that hard for the most part. They could do better with the skywalks; some construction split that system in half and there are places where you can't go from point A to point B without going down onto the street. That's OK in nice weather, but the last time I was in Des Moines was in November and...er, not so nice weather.

Where I park downtown is a garage that was built on the site of the old WHO radio and TV studios. "I parked where Floppy was!" (Floppy was a dog puppet used by a kids' show host on Channel 13 named Duane Ellett. He was also on WHO radio for decades, including hosting "Phone Forum" weekday mornings.)

And the flip/swap is complete. As of this morning KIHS 105.5 is on the air as Iowa Catholic Radio and LaLey is broadcasting on 1150 and 94.5.
