What is good country music?

Maybe you should check out the results of the CRS38 Media survey of over 22,000 country listeners...

22,000 country listners. i seriously doubt it. 22,000 redneck pop listeners is more like it ;D

Actually, this part is correct.

I certainly wouldn't believe anything that someone that has to hide behind a smashedcd or chimp id would have to say...

The survey speaks for 22,000 people... you can't argue with it... accept it and move forward.
And what's wrong with not wanting to use my real name?

I made numerous comments about the type of programming philogophy that led to my using this name on the Standards board.

And I'm going to argue with it. I won't move forward because I'm not listening to this garbage.

There are lots of country atists areound today recording good traditional country but getting very little play on over-the-air radio. Artists like Amber Digby, Bobby Flores, Brian Burns, Buddy Lewis, Dan Stewart, Denise Rains, Dugg Collins, Erin Hay, Frank James, Ginny Mac, Jake Hooker, Jason Allen, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Jessica Hawthorn, Justin Haigh, Kelly Spinks, Kenny Watson, Liz Talley, Luann, Mile Siler, Pier Branch and Susan Raye to name just a few.

... and exactly WHOM cares about these people?

We have a classic country station here in Eastern NC & its not bad. My only beef has always been its all voicetracked except for mornings & I hear the same songs over and over. It seems like everytime I listen for more than 30 minutes I hear "Someone Could Lose A Heart Tonight" by Eddie Rabbitt. I love Eddie Rabbitt but damn enough is enough.....

On the "real" country music format.. The sound is subjective to the listener. Some can say some of the newer George Strait songs have a pop flavor to them whereas others will say stone cold country.
I do think some of his stuff is too pop. But most of it sounds good.

The rock/pop feel of country music has always been there.

Charlie Daniels was on the pop charts. So was Kenny Rogers. People have always complained that Country was to mainstream.

It never changes.

I like Eddie Rabbitt but I can't stand that song.

Speaking of GOOD Country music... a HAPPY 24th birthday to Miss Carrie Underwood today!
Please read the first post to understand my definition of good country music.

I did - and your definition be incorrect!
But it's MY definition. You who like today's country have a whole board. This thread is for those of us who like it to be "real" country.

Never heard of any of them.

I heard Hank Jr. doing what sounded like the new version of "A Country Boy Can Survive" while just going up and down the dial. The brings up a good point. That's a song for people who are independent-minded and able to do things on their own. And Merle Haggard sang about hard work and wanting nothing to do with welfare.

These sound like Republican positions and I'm a Democrat who is lazy and clumsy and doesn't mind government ehlping out those who need it. But I still like the way the music sounds.

Hillbilly Deluxe too rock??? Compared to what, Me and My Gang, Life is a Highway, Bon Jovi. Hillbilly Deluxe is a kickin song!

I don't think it's that the song is too rockin. It's that the song is just horrible, period. Bad, bad, BAD song. Almost everything B&D have released I've liked, but I cannot stand that song. Horrendous crap.

I agree that there's no definitive answer for "What is good country music". For me, good country music doesn't have any saxophones, synthesizers or drum machines. I cringe at the "dance remixes" of the more poppy country songs.

As for my favorite country artists: Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, all three Hanks, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, David Allan Coe, Alabama, George Strait, Travis Tritt, Brooks & Dunn, Sawyer Brown, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, Toby Keith AND The Dixie Chicks.

I feel a need to say something...what's going to come out of my head right now, I'm not really sure will be understood.
"What is good country music", is an unanswerable question, because, as has been noted, it's in the ear of the beholder.
Country music came from the classification of "country-western" music.
Songs don't need to be by folks wearing cowboy hats to be country, but for songs to be western, they have to have country elements and roots.
Hard core western music will be found only on satellite nowadays. Should it have a place/some place/any place in country radio?
I dunno. A band such as "Asleep At The Wheel" has released a ton of material and been around with various members for a looong time, but if "House of Blue Lights" or "Hot Rod Lincoln" are the only tunes by them that get played, is that giving "western" music a moment in the sun?
Ever hear anything by Tish Hinojosa? How about early k.d. lang? There's western-tinged country
out there that I feel could be played, but it's not on anyone's safe list, so...it won't.
I saw Montgomery-Gentry a few years ago when they opened for Toby Keith. Felt like I went to a rock show after hearing them. Mary Chapin Carpenter has branched out over the past few years, but recorded some real country tunes. Maybe it has something to do with the region where a station is as well. A station in New Mexico or Arizona, would they be more core-country than a station in, say, New England?

I was with you until Big and Rich. I'm sorry, but they're just rock garbage.

Trace Adkins isn't dependable either.

A most interesting discussion..

I work at what can be best described as a ''Mall Country'' station..in our playlist, you'll find The Band, Springsteen, Mellencamp, CDB..and the Chicks, including ''I'm Not Ready to Make Nice''...

I'm back in the format after more then a decade away..you would have gotten shot for playing a lot of the music Country Stations are playing now..

I can remember playing K-D Lang when she was a Country Artist--for about 15 minutes--and having listeners calling up and bitching about it..loudly..unitl it was pulled..

I can also remember when Hank Williams Jr was about the hottest thing going--and now he's the opening act on third tier rock tours..amazing..

Your audience will tell you what they like..early and often..among the most popular requests of the last six months in this midwestern suburban market--''Alyssia Lies''..a simply awful song IMHO..and ''Bomshel Stomp'' by Bomshel..

What's changed the most about country is the amount of pop artists--Michelle Branch, Jon Bon Jovi, and soon to be Jewel--crossing over full time into the Country Format and being accepted and celebrated..If you remember, Olivia Newton John and Shania Twain were not met with open arms by the Nashville establishment..

Country is skewing younger..I had a kid call me Sunday and tell me he liked rap--but country ''was tight''..

And so it goes..

I remember KD lang on radio.. most didn't like the singing as it was too "alternative" would be the buzz word we would use today... That and when people found out her orientation.. I think in the south for sure that did her in.

Alyssa Lies won in the ratings I think for the sympathy vote that song pulled out. that's why I haven't really heard any of his new songs do the numbers as the first one yet...

Speaking of sympathy, Martina Mcbride got a good voice but she overdoes it in the sympathy songs..almost everyone released seems to be some cause of the month IMO..

and to finish my rant... One of the local small market country stations in my area is running a promo of a kid calling the station during the morning show for a request.

Morning Talent: Hello
Kid: Yeah I wanna hear Beyonce...
MT: Beyonce?
Kid : Oh No , I want "God Bless the USA" by Green Leewood?
MT: Green Leewood?
(finishes with plug for the morning show)

But looks like we know what we get to look forward to:)
