What is "independent" about KLU?

Other than Jay Baker, what's the point of KLU promoting the use of live jocks if they're all going to do is hire "high school radio" sounding talent reading liners? Where is the intended personality of that station? I don't get it. Seems to me it doesn't hit the intended point of live djs. If you're promoting the aspect of being the only live jock station all day, then you hire low-level talent and make them stick with the cards ...

The reason I bring this up is I hit the station on one of the few songs that were decent, then the jock came in and was so bad I had to stay - don't know if he was a holiday replacement or what, but either hire quality talent, or stick another song there. I've heard some things on there lately that truly sound like SNL mock-radio skits, but obviously weren't meant to be. Why wouldn't they have a strong PD or manager working there driving some sort of personality, given the independent ownership? Is the owner EVER in Indy? or is it a long-distance owner?

am I right here? Or do I just not get it?

I hear that the owner (Russ) is a micro-manager and hotlines the "jocks" all the time when they do something he doesn't like. I also hear that most people that work there are miserable.

You're right. If you just put someone on to have a voice on the air and that person has nothing good (fresh) to say, what's the purpose? Take a listen to middays on the Track. Time and temp every break.

But, you know, right now we aren't allowed to criticize WKLU. Just look at their ratings. They must be doing something right. The KLU-aid drinkers will tell us that. People are listening (or at least filling out diaries which is what it's all about, after all).

I don't listen to WKLU all that often, but I've never thought it sounded like high-school or even college-level talent. Then again, my P2 in the car is a college station...

I think Russ will sell both his Indianapolis and Fort Wayne stations, unless he can find another broadcast station to buy in each market.

Yes, it's true. Bob and Tom are the Kings of Indy radio. I do find it amusing that once they go off the air, Q-95 loses most of their audience. In fact, for a 50,000 watt heritage rock station, I was surprised that 3,000 watt WKLU was within 10% of the ratings of Q-95 from 10AM-Midnight. WKLU is a small rimshot. Q-95 is a monster. If Q-95 ever loses Bob and Tom, they're screwed. Bob and Tom are a well oiled machine and deserve the credit they get. One other thing that occurred to me when I reread this thread: Why do people think that the personalities on WKLU are not good. The personalities on Q-95 (other than Bob and Tom) are "selling something" each and every time they open the mic. Pay attention to that the next time you listen to them. They never have their own things to say, just plugs for clients which are sold as "added value."

But Q-95 doesn't PROMOTE the fact that they have live jocks, they just have them there (along with cooper of course). Q is corporate, but it does have a personality to it. Watered-down as it may have become over the past few years, but wouldn't that be the perfect time for an independent to come out strong?

I thought when the new owner took over initially it had so much potential to really put on a good product, and still be able to make some big money. But no. Just another "wanna-be mega-owner" who paid for some liners, some old stale music, and hired puppets with too many restrictions and/or no imagination (maybe they're a little "stale" also) - just play it safe

Such a shame.

Well, speaking as the midday DJ on 107.9 "The Track", let me say this: Time and temp are a part of being the FULL SERVICE station we are attempting to be. I do strive to talk about local topics, not necessarily be a talk station, but I try.

The old midday show wasn't very interactive or topic driven, it's a hard thing to get over that.

I've talked about the Colts, the 38th street construction, local blood drives, I used the 50,000 watt airwaves to try and discover the best way to remove permanent marker from a dry erase board (man that blew up the phones), my Star Wars addiction, I had Alton Brown from Food Network on my show, Kevin Gregory, Ray Cortopassi, and Paul Poteet from RTV 6 have been on plugging various things, we even discussed inside radio stuff: like how we weren't going all Christmas music, and you better watch out for stations that do go that way, because they might not be back in the new year.

I have hate mail from listeners who objected to a bit I did when I first started, a simple little thing about a music bed I heard on hold, I didnt recognize the tune, but I thought I should have. I played it on air and milked it for a while, took guesses and such. I paid off the bit with a phone call from the company whose hold music I was trying to identify. Simple stuff, but it got the phones going, both good and bad.

Point is, I'm damned if I don't and damned if I do..."You talk too much", "You don't talk enough", "You're boring", "You need to dial it back a bit". SHEESH....

Can't a guy just be himself and have a little fun, while providing a service at the same time?

WKLU has become just another radio station owned by just another millionaire.
It's nothing special!
Back in the day-little guys like Martin Williams, Bill Shirk, Chris Conner
and Bruce Quinn started their own radio stations in Indy.
These men didn't follow someone elses rules. They made their own.
Those days are now gone and an era in broadcasting is over.

the problem in radio is guys having a little fun and leaving listeners out of the loop. there are *personalities* who talk about a lot of things other than time & temp but often they're entertaining themselves

if U R having fun being interesting and entertaining FOR YOUR LISTENERS then imho U are doing a good job.

jocks who are just on talking a lot about things they are interested in but the listeners could care less about (and this goes on more than most jocks or pds would ever admit) ought to be off-the-air until they learn they are there FOR THEIR AUDIENCE and not to amuse themselves

Hey Tired Old Dog....do you ever look in the mirror and wonder how you ended up "settling?" If you can't admit that WKLU is a better radio station than any other in Indy, you must work for one of its competitors. 101.9 is a low powered station from way out of town and they are consistently in the top 5 /25-54. They play so few commercials and actually listen to their listeners. The station you work, for played some extra commercials so that they could pay the Mays brothers two hundred million dollars as a golden parachute. Yea...the corporate guys have really helped radio, it's SO MUCH better than it used to be. Oh yea....Bruce Quinn helped too....here's another Grateful Dead song and then "You and the Law." Enjoy.

sez who?????? they're not *better* in the ratings. they don't even come close to being in the top five in revenue...........what is your criteria for them being "better than any other statio in indy"?????

WKLU is #4 / 25-54 Monday - Sunday 6AM-Midnight. Check the last Arbitron. Even against Bob and Tom in the morning, they are #4 in morning drive and #3 middays. The are a 3000 watt station against 50,000 for WFBQ. As far as revenue goes, you complain if stations play too many commercials and now when they don't act like pigs you want to criticize them for not being the highest in revenue? By the way, when Bruce the Pirate owned 101.9, it was 21st. Let's see....21st to 4th.....hmmmm. By the way, are those stations that have so much "revenue" sharing it with the jocks, or are they voice tracking so they don't have to? Sure...keep defending the corporate pigs.

I heard Mark Clark left as GM at WKLU. When and why?

their signal is basically an in-town stick, so whether they're 4kw (which they are) or 50kw is moot-they cover the metro. i don't know that anybody is necessarily criticizing them (other than their jocks apparently suck)...................their 25-54 ranking is solid but their revenue doesn't come close to matching their ratings. that's not a criticism, it's just a statement of fact

Our engineers from Lousiville have measured WKLU's signal strength
in southern Indiana on many occasions.
Frequently it is greater than the high power stations from here.
I don't believe they are really running low power.
