What is it with KYW and "The Ballpark?"

KYW always says "the ballpark," never "Citizen's Bank Park" in their sports reports. They say "Lincoln Financial Field" during football season. They say "Wachovia Center" (and before that "First Union" and "Core States"). OK, companies pay big bucks for naming rights all over the country and the sports media go along - except for KYW and "the ballpark." KYW even uses the corporate names for out of town ballparks. What's the deal here? The suspicious part of me wonders if Citizen's Bank won't buy time on KYW and the station retaliated. Or maybe the bank bounced some CBS Radio suit's check. KYW is soooo politically correct. Maybe Karen Phillips objects to the name "Citizen's Bank" as discriminating against the "undocumented." ???

We have a bank that bought the naming rights to an arena in my town, and I never use the bank's name. If they want the time, let them buy it.

I have never heard any KYW sports reporter or anchor mention any corporate names when talking about the city's sports venues. For example, when doing a report for the Sixers or Flyers game, I have always heard them say "Live from the Center..." For Phillies reports they say, "Live from the Ballpark..." And for Eagles reports, I have heard them say "Live from The Link..." I have never heard KYW mention Citizen's Bank Park, Wachovia Center, or Lincoln Financial Field. Yes, I still listen to KYW while I am 400 milies away from Philadelphia.

Sorry to bump this, but I was reminded of KY's policy yesterday when hearing a reference thereon to "the Ballpark". But anyway...

Does CB buy time (outside of Phils 'casts) on WPHT (or KYW-TV)? 1210, 1060 and 3 are full sisters. For Viaglob to let 1060 "retaliate" would be hypocrisy, wouldn't it?

You can also include in that WIP, WYSP, and channel 57. But it's not "Viaglob." Viacom and CBS have been separate companies for over 18 months now. Viacom, as it now exists, owns no TV or radio stations. All the stations formerly owned by Viacom are now owned by (a division of) CBS Corp. (except, of course, those sold by CBS after the split).

That's right, that did happen. But most of the last paragraph of my previous post still stands.

The 5:22am traffic report today was sponsored by the Phillies. 15" ad. Just mentioned who the Phils were playing for the next two games and the number to call for tickets. No mention of either "the ballpark" or Citizen's Bank Park. They are really avoiding those free ads for the bank!

If it's an ad for the Phillies, then the Phillies probably provided that copy, not Citizens Bank ... so it sounds like the PHILLIES are avoiding free ads for the bank in that instance. Quick! Call Citizens Bank's corporate office and tell them that the PHILLIES are trying to get one over on them! *shakes head*

It's not just Citizens Bank - I've heard the Tweeter Center referred to as "The T Center" on other stations, and, I do remember many stations referred to the First Union center as the F.U. Center - which First Union obviously asked that people stop doing because of the negative connotation of saying "F.U." Bottom line is when you fork over millions of dollars to name something, that's what you're paying for - the name. TV, Radio, and Newspaper mentions are "added bonuses" that you aren't expecting to get.

Besides, who gives away free advertising in this day and age? It's to the point where each tire change during a pit stop in a NASCAR race is brought to you by SOMEBODY ... or at least it's heading in that direction. This prediction of the future of advertising brought to you by The Simpsons - Now In Theaters!

By the way, I'm now owed $250 for mentioning the Phillies four times (five, now), Citizens Bank twice (now three times), and Tweeter (now twice). NASCAR and I have a long standing agreement, 20th Century Fox bought the Simpsons mention, and First Union no longer exists. ;)

I find it highly ironic that KYW won't reference Citizens Bank Park, yet they have no problem mentioning CHASE Utley!

Assuming that KYW actually has a policy of not saying "Citizens Bank Park", I'll bet you it has more to do with OTHER banks' business that caused the policy. Banks happen to be very competitive and don't like to have their commercials anywhere near another bank commercial. So probably a Wachovia or Commerce or other client demanded that KYW stop saying "Citizens Bank Park" anywhere near their commercials. Simple solution: stop saying the name of the park.

I support them calling it "the Ballpark" simply because I think that selling the naming rights of a taxpayer-funded stadium is quite the whore-ish trend. I know that's probably not their reasoning for not saying the full name, but I can appreciate not having "Citizen's Bank Park" crammed down my throat each time the Phillies are mentioned on that station.

You know, too, it could also be a timesaver for those sports segments -- "cit-i-zens-bank-park" = 5 syllables, "the-ball-park" = 3 syllables.

I would certainly prefer if the stadium weren't tax funded at all, but, assuming it's going to be, letting a corporation put its name on it reduces the burden shouldered by taxpayers.

SEPTA is tax funded and sells advertising to defray costs from riders and taxpayers. Same with the highways. This is the same thing.
