What is missing

You're right, but something has to be done to save terrestrial AM and in some cases FM radio stations. More of the same isn't working.

then what do you suggest? people here have great ideas, but have never controlled the pocketbooks of a radio station.

some also insist a live 24/7 airstaff and a 5000 song playlist is a must and key to success

What? Wait - you mean they AREN'T?

How low have we sunk?

LOL No. I'm on a station in Laramie, WY.. VT'd afternoons from Alaska ( used to be there full time, local for 2 years).. midday guy is in CA.. morning guy is live/local... big, wide but careful playlist. Owned by pa, no ma.. no other businesses, no other stations.. and we beat the pants off the other stations when it comes to localism. But gosh, we arent live over half the day.

"live formatting"?? if its on an HD2, It's been run by automation which someone programmed
I may be wrong, but I believe that WERS Plus has live DJs. Just because it's HD-2, doesn't necessarily mean that there is no live programming. Before being canceled, WBCN Free Form on WZLX HD-3 had live programming. Shifting to New York, WXBK HD-2 which is where the former country branding and format of the HD-1 moved just started having a live local host. So, it isn't far fetched. If WERS HD-2 doesn't, then I stand corrected.

Its signal, though, is an issue...
Trying to do too much with such a wide range of various things makes it tough to attract a loyal audience for any length of time. Especially things that only attract a very small percentage of the population. How many people are tuning into a random high school hockey game, or listening to news pin pointed at one small town on the south shore? I have always thought they should just do local news and talk all the time. Build one thing and build that one thing correctly

Tacos. I’ve been going to the Boston Market yearly (sometimes twice a year) for nearly thirty years and while they seem to have something new on the menu every time, I haven’t seen tacos. Perhaps they’ve learned from Burger King’s attempt at tacos. Those were horrible.
Remember Burger King's hot dogs? They were actually good. I live in NJ a hot dog joint mecca.

The format that Boston is missing is 'Full Service', Weekdays, news, personalities hosting music, talk show{s) with periodic sporting events early night. Overnight syndicated talk or hosted music/talk. Weekends news, sporting events, hosted music (various genres). Sunday mornings religious and public service program(s) followed by 'brunch' hosted jazz music. Sunday night classic 'classical music', 7 to midnight. Variety is the spice of life!
You’re thinking of WATD, basically.

Then they would have to fight Chicago to get the WBMX call letters back! 😄😎
Don't think those call letters are coming back this way anytime soon. When I lived in the Chicago area in the late 70s, there was a station there whose call letters were WBMX, so this call sign is effectively back home.

Yes, I know. I was only being facetious!

bingo, they are niche formats
I can just imagine a station sending out these massive cards to like 500 homes in the area, and every once in a while, they'll call out a series of numbers to cross off. If you listen, you win! Mark off the middle spot if you've been a loyal listener for a month ;).

Closer to home..... Michigan
