What is new music?

When listening to kroq this weekend, the DJ intro’d Bakar’s new song “Hell and Back”.

I’ve been a long time listener of the station, if my previous posts don’t give it away. That song was first played during the “new music” kroq phase in 2020-21.

Is it normal for songs to be “new” again after three years? I also noticed it’s getting some airtime on chr stations

I chalk that up to a DJ mistake. That song is KROQ's #1 most-played song, along with Lost by Linkin Park. The station has been playing it non-stop since March 2020. Obviously Bakar has had other songs since then, although none of them as big.

The song isn't in the national Top 50 for alternative, so it's not new to the format. But as you say it is in the CHR Top 20 now.

With streaming, "new music" is a relative thing. It depends on what other media you use for music.
