What is on 106.3 tonight?

Strong signal covering Manhattan with an urban format. Thought it was the translator but probably a pirate. Must be a new pirate. Incredibly strong.

I noticed dead air on 106.5 last week but I ruled it out as Streetz 106.5.

Perhaps Streetz is now broadcasting on 106.3.

Or maybe the 106.3 translator could be translating WWPR-HD2

WWPR HD2 has always had Spanish A/C programming, not urban. The Clear Channel Mia format they rebroadcast sounds similar to WPAT FM.
I think it is impossible to find a frequency for a translator in Manhattan that would not interfere with a local or suburban station. And the weak translator signal could also be tough to receive if there are nearby pirate stations on the frequency.
Translators may work in less densely populated places, but they may be impractical in New York.

Exactly right, which is why the whole translator service was created... fill-in coverage for primary stations with remote areas that couldn't be reached by the primary. They were never meant to be "mini radio stations." I think there are some cities where you may be able to make it work, but I have my doubts about a translator working in the most crowded media market in America, spectrum-wise.

The F.C.C. has accepted the application from the owners of the Manhattan based translator on 106.3 to keep it silent till some resolution of the interference complaints from WKMK is worked out (if that is actually possible).
My question:The F.C.C. listing indicates that the Remain Silent Authority will expire in about 5 months, on 2/25/12. Does that indicate that if the situation is not worked out by then, the license for the translator will be forfeited? Are applications for an extension generally accepted?
