What is Q100 up to now??

Okay, now I'm sure I'm not dreaming. Had to listen the last couple of days but, what is the deal with Q100 mixing in old skool rock tracks? Seriously! In the 1pm hour, I heard Stereo-MC's "Connected" from 1992. Then, in that same hour, I heard Smashing Pumpkins "1979" from 1994 and just this very moment, they played "Champagne Supernova" by Oasis from 1995!

Anyone else find this just a tad bit strange?? I mean as of this year, Q finally shifted more towards a CHR sound but, now suddenly, out of nowhere, they're playing Ke$ha into Smashing Pumkins?!

That's odd. ??? One would think a station would be different and do something other stations aren't doing and NOT play tracks like a certain station that just added a simulcast and is doing horrible in the ratings.

Two words...Star 94. They are trying to copy whatever Star 94 is doing...even though Q100 is #1. This will continue until WSTR flips.

And what do we have for the winner, Johnny?

Seriously, I give up. Q100's obsession with Star 94 is clearly alive and well. Following Q and hoping that they'll finally bite the bullet and act like the major market CHR Atlanta deserves is like hitting my head against the wall. Star positions its music towards Hot AC over the past month, and it sounds pretty damn good...WSTR now occupies a distinct niche in the market. So instead of pushing forward as Atlanta's true mainstream CHR, a format which is currently successful in almost every single major market, Q100 starts playing 90s alternative (Smashing Pumpkins, U2, Oasis) and other weird recurrents and golds (Beyonce - Naughty Girl, Vertical Horizon and the return of All Saints and INOJ) in middays? Then as soon as 3:00 hits, pretty much normal CHR.

They're scared Star is going to run away with all of their adult numbers. They still might, since Star's recurrent/gold selection actually makes SENSE and the station has forward momentum.

This is why I'm glad to not have a station like Q100. Instead of trying to steal The Groove's shine and tweak their playlist to get former Beat listeners, they still try to take on Star 94 by making the playlist even worse? Seriously. Cumulus is a joke when it comes to CHR. Hey Star 94, stop calling yourself the "hit music station". You already sound like a hot AC already. Q100, unless the staff has been living under a rock and didn't hear about The Beat flipping, go FULL-BLOWN CHR ALREADY!

....Ok, there were quite a few things I could've willingly quoted here, but I pick what's above because it ties directly in with my question.

AND THE QUESTION IS:
For a while, I've been thinking... wondering... lets say that Star does flip. Then what would Q do? What does everyone think Q would do? Would they go more mainstream and play mor eevil rhythmic hits or would they stray farther off into the Star direction? This is what I've been wondering, especially right along with the question; Is star existing as is really helping or hurting the situation? Is there any proof that Q will go more one way or another without Star? This is a serious question because I have absolutely no idea.

ANOTHER QUESTION IS:
If every Atl. hit music station in the battle seems to have gone more towards the evil rhythmic sound in attempts to beat their competition, then why would we now want to be doing the OPPOSITE of this as an attempt to remain #1? This is also a serious question, because, once again, I can't comprehend exactly what's going on... and like Judge Judy, when something doesn't make much sense to me, I have questions that I need answers to clarify.

Thanks.

I wish Star 94 would go all dance and come back strong. ;D

Believe me! I wish that too. But, more realistically....

BE...ATLANTA's...FIRST...REAL...CHR in nearly 20 years!

(SOMEONE....ANYONE)!

I still can't understand why Atlanta area PD's/MD's are STILL thinking they have some OTHER idea that they think is better.

A full blown CHR WILL work in a market this size! NO ONE ELSE is doing it! And it's multi-level music would take on other stations all at the same time. (Uuurrrgghhh!)

Atlanta is STILL NOT hearing:

SELENA GOMEZ "Round And Round"
DAVID GUETTA "Getting Over You"
AUBURN "La La La"
JESSIE MCARTNEY "Shake"
MIKE POSNER "Bow Chicka Wow Wow"
KANYE WEST "Erase Me"

And if Q100 remains our only "CHR" station, Atlanta never will.

P.S.: As many of you are ready to bash me again, by saying...."all those songs aren't doing much on the charts..." Well, that list was made was just by me glancing at the airplay lists of dozens of other CHR's across the country.

It's really ridiculous for a market this size to be "in the dark" with new/current music!

(so, I still sound repetitive, I don't care)

((hugs)) ;D

Can you EVEN imagine? (oh, wait)...I could imagine!  ::) Anyway, and be what format, a HOT-AC? Great another Cumulus, HOT-AC sounding station! Atlanta might as well be market#110 (Augusta, GA)....OH WAIT, they have TWO CHRs!

Last I heard Cumulus and LF couldn't reach a price. You're right though...Cumulus has a fat new wallet with Cumulus Radio Investors.

Atlanta did have a real CHR/Pop for much of the Y2K, both with the early incarnation of the now defunct 95.5 The Beat, and with the Susquehanna-owned years of Q-100.
Nowadays Q-100 is still a true CHR/Pop albeit a conservative sounding one that would sound great...in a medium sized Midwestern market rather than in market number 7 ;)

Wow, I was thinking of speaking about the evil Auburn song, but.... decided not to at the time. I figured that at least that song would be an obvious no brainer. I didn't, however, think about all those other songs! I really don't care for the Auburn song too much, but.. ok, those of you who know me from other areas of this board, know I am a common sense type guy, and this will explain why I'm about to say that despite the fact I don't care too much for it, I still think her hit song should be acknowledged as a hit!

BUT WE MUST GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.
Thanks to Saturday Night Q (which is in some ways, better than what many other chr mixshow programming has to offer), many of the evil songs that SHOULD be heard are played, and I'll be thankful for that alone, even though it's sometimes funny when half of the evil mainstream hit songs on Saturday Night Q sound underground and exclusive in the A.

By the way, I thought Mike Posner's upcoming single was going to be "please don't go"?

KDM, just b/c a song doesnt make it to the playlist of Q-100 or V-103 doesnt mean it's considered an underground hit in Atlanta.
Remember, Atlanta has one of the better club scenes in the country both for Hip Hop and for Electronic music. I mean, you've got promoters like Liquified based in the ATL so all the top ranked DJs in the world come to spin in Atlanta on a regular basis. Phoenix can't hold a candle to Atlanta's Electronica and Hip Hop club scenes! Overall, there are definitely clubs in town that play real underground stuff, and you should give Atlanta's clubbers more credit than you tend to give them.
Just figured it was time to give Atlanta respect where respect is due.

PS I've also heard Atlanta's got a strong Circuit/Gay Club scene.

I know it's not an underground hit, but it just sounds like that when many times the only time you hear something that's being played in a majority of other places, then in Atl, it only plays in a weekend evening mixshow with other more obscure exclusive things mixed in. It gives it an "undergound feel", since most stations that tend to play what's not in the mainstream do it during what they consider a specialty or "undergound" show. I do criticize certain stations about certain things, but never said anything about the clubs or clubbers. I always compare Phoenix and Atl when it comes to hit music and light rock hits and sometimes even talk radio formatting, but never on the hip hop tip. As far as electronica, I can tell (outside of radio formatting) that Atlanta has a bigger scene than Phoenix. I "know" more dj's in Atlanta than I do in Phoenix who specialize in making electronic and electro / E-HOP productions. Better yet, Q100's Saturday Night Q does beat anything Phoenix has to offer dance mixshow-wise, so I include also being better than Phoenix when I say; "Saturday Night Q...which is in some ways, better than what many other chr mixshow programming has to offer....". They do kill all of Phoenix radio, when it comes to dance, hence, why I still stream Atl radio, and...

Which is why I also said this:

You must admit out of all things, the Q100 Sat mixshow is a keeper. At least there are some things there that people in other places in the U.S. could only wish they had on their stations. Too bad WBTS doesn't do anything :(.

Yeah, I would imagine LF isn't dying to sell it and certainly wouldn't let it go at a fire-sale price. They said they wanted out of radio but haven't sold many of their stations...are they overpriced or are there not buyers?

I always thought if Cumulus wanted to be a big player in Atlanta...if Citadel has to wind up selling stations, use some of their $$$ and buy 106.7/101.5 and snag 94.1 if they could agree on a price. Would give them Rock 100.5, Q100, Kicks, True Oldies, and Star on FM.

Sorry, but this is a bad list, period; you can state your case (and be correct, by the way) with proven hits that Atlanta's never heard spun on their airwaves, but not one of these songs solidifies your case.

I don't know about the rest of those songs, but Auburn's "la la la" is an established hit. Personally, I don't care for the poor quality lyrics of the song... but it is still a hit and at least it sounds more than halfway decent. The David Guetta one might not be a rhythmic hit, but is CHR top 40 material. The "fun" chr's are at least letting their mixers use it, or as I've seen other people say "the cool stations" are playing it.

I do have a question though;
Is anyone currently playing the uptempo remix of "birthday sex" and "day 'n' nite" by Kid Cudi as recurrents? And what about "do you remember" by Jay Sean and "beautiful" by Akon?
