Ok Ok now this question has been asked before, I know, but things are always changing up the stack, does anyone have any opinion as to which station, or family of stations would be the cats ass to work for? (thanks ricker)

I know KEXP would be neat, but how about commercial stations in this market. Is there any stations that stand out in your folks' super knowledge filled noggins out here?

Please explain what you base your opinions on in detail.

Which company which station which position

Thanks everybody

Well...

Re: WHY...

I don't have the slightest idea what that means, but just watching you two go at each other again and again on any given topic is getting a little bit weird...

The Real ??? Is Broadcasting still a viable career ?!

I have read all the replies to this post. I notice something ... no answers the question. What station IS best to work for?

And define "Best". Is it a choice between which evil slave master you work for?
Is it better to be hit by a kenworth truck or a metro bus? Is that an overly cynical look at the general state of employment in the Broadcasting industry?

Are there any companies left that treat their people well? And let's be real honest, how many of these saintly employers ever really existed?

I remember watching automation being installed in 1974. I worked in a station that was very cheaply built in 1947, and was still using the original xtr. AND air studio in 1977! We had more stuff from Radio Shack than anywhere else! So the urge for management to cut costs as much as possible has always existed.

Are all the problems in the industry REALLY the fault of corporate consolidation, as many claim? Or could it be that the market has fundamentally changed - not as many people listening to radio as there were a generation ago?

And how much can we blaim Intel, et al? The technology has gotten so cheap and easy, especially in generating audio, what bean counter would want to pay people to do what a PC or 3 can do?

So the real question(s), as I would love to see comment on, are (1) Is Broadcasting still a viable career choice? (2) WHAT part of the business would you recommend a young adult to pursue? and (3) What is the one thing you most has hurt Broadcasting?

I debated making this a seperate thread. Please give constructive dialogue, not personal attacks. THANKS!

He doesn't like it when I challenge or correct his posts, that I know.

As for being called "Derby," I have no idea.

Which ones of you are...

Well ok, on to the next question,

How many of you who are reading this are employed by a radio broadcasting company right now? Don't have to say which one if you don't wish to, but I am curious.

Thank you for the responses.

Seems like maybe time to ask a few questions:

a. Would broadcasting be your career or your hobby? If "hobby" (the option I chose after bailing on the "career") -- then you can generally pick & choose part-time opportunities and when the water gets too stinky you simply get out of the pool until you find a better opportunity/place to swim.

b. Why do you choose the profession? For self-fulfilling reasons; or to make an attempt at "community service". If the latter, perhaps newsrooms are the best avenue -- but even there the costs are cut and the concept of "community interest" is non-existent (ask yourself 'how many local public affairs shows are left in the market'). If self-fulfilling reasons ("i wanna be a celebrity"), I think the challenge is too difficult ... no one remembers "liner readers"; and most stations don't want you to do anything else....

c. I'm not sure that ANY publicly-visible company treats people well? Seems most of them more concerned with whether that one annoying shareholder will open his/her yap at the next annual meeting -- and otherwise the internal antics never make the radar of concern. This generalization NOT just about radio or broadcasting; but any company where the executive tier's peformance is scrutinized by potentially frustrated shareholders. So, that means best bets are usually smaller, privately held companies where you can know the owners and interact with them -- and in that case, hardly ANY of those left in the broadcast game (at least in larger markets).

Guess it concerns me when almost everyone I turn to in every facet of the business (except possibly sales and some who have never cared about "environmental" issues) is frustrated and looking at "options outside the business", it's hard to get too jazzed that the future's bright enough to go out and buy new shades.

That you TRY, that is....

Liar...
