I live in Dallas, and I have fotten KDKA 1020 in Pittsburgh. And I was inside. I've also gotten WBGG 970 in Pit. That is 1070 miles away.

Picked up KFI/640 Los Angeles just prior to local sunrise in 1978, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts (distance: 2450 miles). Sent in QSL request, nary a reply. Oh, well. So, fortunately I did also catch KSL/1160 Salt Lake City that morning (distance: 2100 miles). Got a nice QSL from Bonneville!

Receiver: Realistic DX-160 (I still have it AND it still WORKS!)
Antenna: 5/8 CB antenna (It DID work!)

From Pleasant View, TN (about 25 miles north of Nashville):

AM: Talk Radio U.K. on both 1053 and 1098KHz - buried in interference with London traffic and station phone numbers ending in 1053 and 1098. Station has multiple high-powered transmitters on each frequency scattered around the country, it's impossible to know which two I had. (probably a combination of several) Kenwood TS-940 ham rig and 320-foot wire antenna, about 5 years ago.

Best domestic DX probably CKWX-1130, Vancouver heard numerous times, including very strong last night. CBU-690 also heard once. KGA-1510, Spokane logged with WLAC (25 miles away) on the air. (I suspect KGA's pattern was out of whack at the time, and I do live in one of WLAC's nulls.)

FM: KYXY-96.5, San Diego. (yes, California. I was floored. At about 1,700 miles it's my only FM logging beyond 1,450.) Logged at the end of a mediocre Albuquerque opening - the band briefly opened to Phoenix, and during the Phoenix portion, this one snuck in. Technics ST-G50, 9-el Yagi at 10 feet.

Tropo: various Lower Rio Grande Valley (Brownsville, Harlingen, etc.) stations at 950 miles. One tantalizing Spanish-language outlet on 101.7 was probably XHVIR Cd. Victoria at 1,150 miles, but they were giving an educational talk with no identifying information so I can't be sure it was them. Global warming? Haven't had a decent South Texas opening in years.

TV: Nothing extraordinary on E-skip. XERV-9, Reynosa (about 1,000 miles) on tropo. Maybe better, KQTV-2 St. Joseph, MO, about 450 miles, via tropo with WKRN-2 on the air 30 miles away.

On an afternoon just after a thunderstorm in the summer of 92, I got Nashville, TN's "Y107" in Harrisonburg, VA. That is a distance of 467 miles.

The next day, after another thunderstorm I managed to get to get Houston, TX's
"Mix 96.5" in Winchester, VA. Talking 1173 miles there.

Now this is where it gets odd...

same day...same city ( Winchester ), I was able to pick up a bunch of Norfolk, VA stations including WFOG 92.9, WGH 97.3, WNOR 99.5 (?), Z104 WNVZ 104.5, and some station around FM 96 called Joy. Plus on top of that both WAVY 10, WYAH 27 and WTVZ 33 came in too. Distance 195 miles. Almost like living in Hampton Roads !! At least for a half hour anyway.

OK, I should preface this with the caveat that I am not a rabid broadcast DXer, just a guy who plays with it periodically. These are perhaps twenty years old, +.

AM: I only scanned the dial, with mild interest. Most distant was 1404 Khz from Conkary, Guinea. It would come in almost nightly when I lived on the Gulf Coast, throwing a nasty het. Occasionally, I would get audio, but that was rare. I am not sure this is such a great catch @ 200kw, but, it was a long way, and the only African I ever heard.

FM: Nothing Earth-shattering here. Bermuda is probably best, at 1400 miles and change. Best tropo was Madison, WI to Pascagoula @ just shy of 900 miles. A few Mexicans would pop in tropo from time to time, too.

TV: Most distant was KTVU/San Francisco via Es on channel 2 @ ~2000 miles. On the tropo side, the furthest was Mexico City on (I think) 11 and 9 (those records were lost a few moves back). I also got a nice group of Cubans one afteroon on 7, 9, 11, & 13. I understand those are fairly low-powered, so that might be interesting.

I tried to find the distance from Guinea to the Gulf Coast (punched in Tampa as a reference even though that may not be where you are) and failed, but I'm gonna guess 4,000 miles. I'd call that a pretty good catch if I were you, even if this signal is 200K and it's an all-water path.

It would be just shy of 5000 miles, and, yeah, practically all water. I was living in Pascagoula, MS at the time, a town working its way out from Katrina debris.

The regularity of this signal makes me think it was no big deal. I would hear the het a lot.

My older brother was a big MW DXer in his day. He would get some pretty spectacular stuff. His best? Radio Carve/850, Montevideo, Uruguay. Just 50kw @ just under 5000 miles. Also Radio Tucuman/930 (I think), in Northern Argentina. Just 5kw.

I especially remember him getting Uruguay. It was at the station's sign-off -- late, of course. He woke me up, he was so excited.

This would be in the late 1970s.

He would also get stations running a few hundred watts from Northern South America all the time, and heard nearly all the Caribbean. Pascagoula is an awesome DX location. He was using one of the old Radio Shack TRF radios... remember those?

There was a strong station in Dakar, Senegal around 764 kc that was fairly easy to get. The VOA in Munich, Germany around 1193 kc was so strong at times that I could get it on the car radio. UK stations were routine including a pirate, Radio Caroline, running 10kw on 1520. Of course, these were the days with far less stations, and most domestics went off on Sunday nights for maintenance.

I would kill to live on one of the coasts. I met up with WA1OIN and we DXed from his car near Boston. The Asian and EU stations were KILLING the stateside stuff. Hearing Radio India on MW and Cairo etc was pretty cool.

Me? I live in the radio black hole called the Midwest. I do get hets on WLS 891 from Algeria butnever any audio. :-(
