What Is The Minor Change At WBOQ?

Among the actions by the FCC is a minor change to the recent CP request by WBOQ. From the FCC's website, I couldn't determine what the engineering change was. A new set of numbers for the DA pattern? A slight change in the latitude and longitude of the tower site? Who knows?

http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?call=WBOQ&x=0&y=0&sr=Y&s=C
That says last update to CP on 3/2/12. Don't know if numbers on that page for the CP are
a previous version or updated, but it does say 3/12

Current TO CP (listed)
HAAT 136 meters TO 98 meters
Height Above Ground level 100 meters TO 49 meters
Height Above Sea Level 146 meters TO 119 meters

The "current" says "directional" but the CP doesn't say that

Most importantly, as was mentioned here, the trans location
FROM NW of Rt 127, Manchester-by-the-Sea/Gloucester area
TO just off Rt 1, Topsfield. Now maybe as you say the lat./long. of the tower site may have
changed, but the stats on that page are said to have been updated on March 2. Not sure
if they're the updated CP, if there is one, or the previous CP

The engineering amendment was to change the entries in section III-B, questions 5 and 6. Question 5 is the ASRN which is the same (however the tower does have a new owner.) Question 6 is the overall tower height above ground level, which was changing in order to add on to the top of the tower for the new WBOQ antenna.

It's just housekeeping.

Thanks for the info. Clicking on the co-ordinates on radio-locator's page will show you the
current and new/CP transmitter locations. It will be about 15 mi or so NW of the current one
but certainly it will help the signal get north and south along routes 1 and I-95 (as long as they
protect WRBB 104.9, Northeastern U.) The new site appears to be a bit north of the
Topsfield Fairgrounds, and the intersection of Rt 97 and US 1

(as long as they protect WRBB 104.9, Northeastern U.)

WRBB is a class D, so no protection need be afforded from WBOQ. WRBB, on the other hand, can't interfere with WBOQ's protected contour.

If the new site is farther away from Providence, and WRBB doesn't need to be protected, why couldn't they go non-directional?

Almost certainly because WBOQ is already directional. The CP pattern (or do I mean the applied-for pattern?) and the licensed pattern are similar, but IIRC, the new pattern has a slightly deeper minimum to the south-southwest than does the licensed pattern. Both patterns are kind of kidney shaped.

I remember that when WHAV-FM 92.5 (now WXRV) boosted its ERP from 20KW to 50 KW on the AM stick (350 feet HAAT on Silver Hill at the end of Observatory Rd) many years ago they seemingly had to install a directional antenna to protect the 92.5 in Waterbury, CT and maybe even WPRO-FM 92.3 in Providence. Then one day the previous owner applied for an received an ok to replace it with a non-directional antenna at the same site and altitude, just like that. Now of course, WXRV broadcasts with the equivalent of 50K @ 500 feet, slightly better than 492 feet which seems to be the standard now.

WBOQ has a grandfathered short-spacing to WLKZ Wolfeboro, NH. That's why the station is still directional.

Hmm...according to FCC records, WBOQ's 1.000 portion of the pattern runs from 260 degrees which is northwesterly all the way to 360 degrees, due north, then northeasterly to 150 degrees. WLKZ lies along the 348-degree radial from WBOQ's transmitter site, meaning it appears they are sending a full-strength signal right on up to Gunstock Mountain in Gilford.

You're right, I didn't take another look at the diagram. The signal is only directional toward WWLI, where there's still grandfathered overlap. In regards to WLKZ, they're using 73.215 short spacing rules.

Hey, that's the second time today that someone posted the words "you're right" in a reply....Raccoon Radio did so earlier. Actually, I get that a lot. Hee hee.
